SYNOPSIS

Director Tim Burton brings the cult classic series "Dark Shadows" to the big screen in a film featuring an all-star cast, led by Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter.

In the year 1750, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from England to start a new life in America, where they build a fishing empire in the coastal Maine town that comes to carry their name: Collinsport. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of falling in love with a beauty named Josette DuPres (Bella Heathcote) and breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death-turning him into a vampire, and then burying him...alive.

Nearly two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972, a stranger in an even stranger time. Returning to Collinwood Manor, he finds that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin, and the dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.

Family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) is the one person Barnabas entrusts with the truth of his identity. But his rather odd and anachronistic behavior immediately raises the suspicions of the live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), who has no idea what kind of problems she's really digging up.

As Barnabas sets out to restore his family name to its former glory, one thing stands in his way: Collinsport's leading denizen, who goes by the name Angie...and who bears a striking resemblance to a very old acquaintance of Barnabas Collins.

Also residing in Collinwood Manor are Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chlo‘ Grace Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gully McGrath). The longsuffering caretaker of Collinwood is Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley), and new to the Collins' employ is David's nanny, Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote), who is, mysteriously, the mirror image of Barnabas' one true love, Josette.

LAKE EFFECTS
Release Date, August 14, 2012

In Lake Effects, Sara (Scottie Thomson) and Lily (Madeline Zima) are two sisters from a small, lakeside town that lead two different lives: Sara, a successful Los Angeles attorney and Lily, a local art teacher who never left home. But when the father of the two sisters (Jeff Fahey) unexpectedly dies, Sara returns to her childhood home - on the enchanting Smith Mountain Lake - to help settle his estate. Through the guidance of their father's spirit, the two women and their mother, Vivian (Jane Seymour), will finally discover what being a family truly means.

Lake Effects was inspired by the location first and then the script was built from what already existed. The Smith Mountain Lake community played the largest ÒroleÓ in the film and the film would not have been possible without the hundreds of volunteers, in-kind donations and selfless support of Southwest Virginia. The film was shot entirely on location and honestly showcases this real location and its community.

Sherlock Holmes 2 SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS
Release date: June 12, 2012

SYNOPSIS:
Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and Jude Law returns as his friend and colleague, Dr. Watson, in ÒSherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.Ó Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the roomÉuntil now. There is a new criminal mastermind at largeÑProfessor James Moriarty (Jared Harris)Ñand not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may give him an advantage over the renowned detective. Around the globe, headlines break the news: a scandal takes down an Indian cotton tycoon; a Chinese opium trader dies of an apparent overdose; bombings in Strasbourg and Vienna; the death of an American steel magnateÉ No one sees the connective thread between these seemingly random eventsÑno one, that is, except the great Sherlock Holmes, who has discerned a deliberate web of death and destruction. At its center sits a singularly sinister spider: Moriarty. Holmes' investigation into Moriarty's plot becomes more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London to France, Germany and finally Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead, and moving perilously close to completing his ominous plan. If he succeeds, it will not only bring him immense wealth and power but alter the course of history.

Review:
I thought the first SHERLOCK HOLMES movie was wonderful, but the sequel was even better. Robert Downey, Jr. is an extremely gifted actor and he has found a way of emersing himself in a role so deeply that you loose track of his other fine performances. The chemistry displayed with Judd Law as Watson is a joy to watch. Their constant banter is a thing of beauty. The visuals are amazing and the entire film is a wonderful escape into another world -- while gently making you think about all the major factors of this wonderful story. It will engulf you as few movies have been able to do.

Journey 2 The Mysterious Island JOURNEY 2 THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND
Release date: June 5, 2012

Synopsis: The follow-up to the 2008 hit! The new journey begins when young adventurer Sean (Josh Hutcherson) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist... a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean's new stepfather (Dwayne Johnson) joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

Review:
Loved this movie! The story was a bit predictable, but so what. This is a good movie to take your kids to see -- or pick up and watch at home. There are a few scary beasts about, but overall, the PG rating limits that too much. While watching the movie, I had flashes of "Jurasic Park" or the original "Mysterious Island". The visuals were terrific and while I can't say I'm a huge Dwayne Johnson fan, I absolutely love Michael Caine and he is marvelous as the ecccentric grandfather Sean goes to find.
The scenery is awesome and the story takes advantage of modern-day graphics especially well. My favorite is the bumblebee flight, but I have to admit the Nautalis is particularly fascinating.
This movie brought back some fantastic memories of reading the Jules Verne novels as well -- and I've already downloaded them to my Kindle so I can read them one more time. There aren't many movies that bring back memories of novels read and adventures of imagination.

Joyful Noise JOYFUL NOISE
Release date: May 1, 2012
Product Description:
Joyful Noise tells the story of an unlikely partnership between two strong-minded women who are forced to work together to save a small town Gospel Choir after budget cuts threaten to shut them down. Music is a very important component to the story.

Review:
I enjoyed this movie a good deal. While it felt a little like "Sister Act" from years ago, it was a bit different. There were a number of story elements spinning around the main plot -- a small town choir going to Los Angeles for a competition. You see a bit of what is happening in small town America today -- businesses closing, homes going up in foreclosure, people having multiple jobs to keep their families together.
The music surrounding the movie is wonderful. Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton are comical as two battling sponsors of the choir, but the music that they make is marvelous.

THE FIELDS
Release Date: April 24, 2012

WHAT: THE FIELDS, an award-winning thriller starring Cloris Leachman is coming to Blu-Ray and DVD on April 24th. Brought to you by Breaking Glass Pictures (THE LIVING WAKE, 5 STAR DAY, CROPSEY), THE FIELDS follows a young boy as he discovers a terrifying secret lurking in the fields outside his Pennsylvania countryside home. The film received awards at the Erie Film Festival (Best Directors, Best Actress for Leachman), Terror Film Festival (Best Feature, Best Actress for Leachman, Best Emerging Actor for Ormond), Philadelphia Terror Film Festival (Best Picture, Best Emerging Actor for Ormond, Sound Design, Score) and the Best Picture Award at the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival.

Review:
This is one of those rare movies that you would classify as thriller, suspenseful but without the blood and gore of current movies in this category. It holds your interest as you wait for the next thing to happen. Cloris Leachman is excellent and the young actor, Joshua Ormond, is wonderful. Based on actual events, it puts you into the heart of life in a remote area of Pennsylvania.

EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE
Release date: March 27, 2012

SYNOPSIS:
Adapted from the acclaimed bestseller by Jonathan Safran Foer, ÒExtremely Loud & Incredibly CloseÓ is a story that unfolds from inside the young mind of Oskar Schell, an inventive eleven year-old New Yorker whose discovery of a key in his deceased fatherÕs belongings sets him off on an urgent search across the city for the lock it will open. A year after his father died in the World Trade Center on what Oskar calls ÒThe Worst Day,Ó he is determined to keep his vital connection to the man who playfully cajoled him into confronting his wildest fears.
Now, as Oskar crosses the five New York boroughs in quest of the missing lock - encountering an eclectic assortment of people who are each survivors in their own way - he begins to uncover unseen links to the father he misses, to the mother who seems so far away from him and to the whole noisy, dangerous, discombobulating world around him.

Review:
I was wondering how this movie would tackle such a sensitive subject as 9/11 and the destruction of the World Trade Center. While it has been 10 plus years, the memory is still fresh for those involved -- and even for those who lived through that tragedy. This is a marvelous movie that delves into the emotion of a young boy who lost his father that day.
The journey of Oskar Schell as he copes with his loss and tries to find the lock that can be opened by a key he found in his father's closet. The key is in an envelope with the name Black on it. Oskar comes up with a plan to find what the key opens. In the process, he meets many different kinds of people and eventually is helped by "The Renter" - a man renting a room in the building where Oskar's grandmother lives. "The Renter" - marvelously played by Max van Sydow - accompanies Oskar as he wanders New York in search of the key's owner.
Tom Hanks portrays Oskar's father; Sandra Bullock is his mom. The bond between father and son was extremely strong and somewhat unique. Oskar is older than his years -- and you join him on his journey not only to find the owner of the key, but in his struggle to come to grips with the loss of his father. He forms a new bond with his mother -- and his grandfather -- "the renter".
This is a beautifully conceived and executed movie. It is sensitive to the subject matter and the emotions attached to this event. The acting could not be better. Thomas Horn is brilliant as Oskar Schell. Sandra Bullock is amazing as Oskar's mom who is trying to deal with her own grief as she tries to understand what her son is going through.

Superman Elite

SUPERMAN VS. THE ELITE WORLD PREMIERE

Superman vs. The Elite, the next entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies, received its World Premiere as WonderConÕs featured evening event for Friday, March 16 in Anaheim. SUPERMAN VS. THE ELITE will be distributed June 12, 2012 by Warner Home Video.
Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video, the all-new, PG-13 rated film will screen at 6:30 p.m. in the Anaheim Convention Center Ballroom. The screening was followed by a panel discussion amongst filmmakers and voice cast members. Award-winning comics writer Joe Kelly and versatile voice actor Robin Atkin Downes (Justice League: Doom and BABYLON 5) were among the confirmed panelists for Friday. Additional panelists will be announced as they are confirmed.
Kelly has adapted the story from his original 2001 DC Comics release, ÒWhatÕs So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?Ó into the taut, thrilling screenplay for Superman vs. The Elite. The single-issue comic, Action Comics #775, was lauded by Wizard Magazine as the ÒGreatest Superman Story of All Time,Ó and ranked the epic tale at No. 21 on its list of the ÒTop 100 Comics of the last 30 years.Ó
In Superman vs. The Elite, Superman's effectiveness as a super hero comes into question when a new group of super powerful crusaders, known as "The Elite," appear on the scene. As super heroes, the Elite know no bounds, and are more than willing to kill, even on a massive scale, to stop villainy -- putting them on a collision course with the ever-ethical, yet preferably non-lethal Man of Steel.
George Newbern (Father of the Bride) reprises his Justice League animated television role as Superman, and primetime television star Pauley Perrette (NCIS) provides the voice of Lois Lane. Downes steps in as Manchester Black, leader of The Elite. David Kaufman (Justice League: Doom) also reprises his Justice League TV series role as Jimmy Olsen.
The film is directed by Michael Chang (Batman: Brave and the Bold). Bruce Timm (Batman: Year One) is executive producer, and Alan Burnett (Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) is producer.
