What's New Today

April 12:

JMS: JMS has responded to a few questions in the B5 moderated newsgroup -- including why SCIFI did not pick up "Legend of the Rangers". Check out the whole thing over at the JMS Speaks page.

RATINGS: Top 10 SF Network Shows: The X-Files 4.8; Smallville 3.9; Dark Angel 3.5; Futurama 3.5; Buffy 3.3; Charmed 3.1; Enterprise 2.5; Sabrina 2.4; Touched by an Angel 1.3, and Mysterious Ways 0.7. Source: Nielsen Galaxy Report, 3/11/02 - 3/17/02.

LIVING WITH THE DEAD: Ted Danson stars in an upcoming mini-series entitled "Living with the Dead". From the trailers I saw last night on TV, this will be a fascinating look at paranormal events. This CBS miniseries is a biographical look at television psychic James Van Praagh. Van Praagh told SCI FI Wire that he had a close connection with Ted Danson, who plays Van Praagh. "Ted knew me before he was even signed on for the movie," Van Praagh said. "I had done [psychic] readings for him, and he knew how I worked, so he really gleaned from me to portray me. He also has a very strong spiritual sense, so he used that as well to help the part." Living with the Dead premieres April 28.

STAR TREK: On April 20, there will be 35 different covers for the weekly TV Guide. Why 35? It will celebrate the 35 years of Star Trek. Each cover will represent one of the episodes chosen as the "best" of Trek. When placed beside one another, the covers will produce a mosaic of all the stars from STAR TREK, THE NEXT GENERATION, DEEP SPACE NINE, VOYAGER and ENTERPRISE. Which are the top 3 episodes? According to TV GUIDE, number three is Picard getting Borgafied in “Best of Both Worlds Part 1.” Number two is Kirk reacting to Edith Keeler’s death in “City on the Edge of Forever,” while the top spot is taken with Picard getting into the running crew poker game at the and of “All Good Things…”

STAR WARS: Fox Network is ramping up for the release of EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES on May 16. Fox Network (a sister company of 20th Century Fox) will air THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK on April 25; RETURN OF THE JEDI on May 2 and PHANTOM MENACE on May 9.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Fans of the original Battlestar are NOT happy to hear about SCIFI's plans for a new production of the show. In fact, they have set up two petitions to voice their option. The first at http://www.petitiononline.com/bsg1/petition.html asks SCIFI to incorporate the original cast of orignal series cast into the new production. The second petition, at http://www.petitiononline.com/bsgffs/petition.html insists that fans will not support a new production that changes the original premise of the series.

THIS WEEK IN SCI-FI:

April 11:
ICON 21 ICON: Tye Bourdony from The Lighter Side of Sci-Fi has created a terrific piece that will be used at ICON 21 this year. With guests like Andreas Katsulas, Julie Caitlin Brown, Rick Biggs, and Jason Carter, B5 fans have a lot to look forward to. Tye will be auctioning off signed copies of his satire for charity at the convention. Dates are April 19-21, 2002. For more information, visit their website at http://www.iconsf.org/index.html.

ROSWELL: UPN made the cancellation of the series official yesterday. The series finale will air at 9 p.m. ET/PT on May 14. "I would like to thank 20th Century Fox Television, UPN and especially our fans, whose combined efforts helped get us a third season for Roswell," series co-creator Jason Katims said in a statement. "[Executive producer] Ronald D. Moore and I had the fans very much on our minds when we were writing this final episode. We felt they deserved a great ending."

If you missed this series while it was on UPN, you can catch, from the beginning, as SCI FI Channel airs reruns of all three seasons starting this fall.

FREE COMIC DAY: SCI FI will celebrate FREE COMIC DAY on May 4 by distributing free postcards designed by comic artist Neal Adams featuring artwork of the SCI FI original series Farscape and Stargate SG-1. About 250,000 postcards with Adams' artwork will go to fans at comic retailers around North America. Limited-edition posters designed by Adams for SCI FI, featuring Farscape and Stargate SG-1 casts side by side and entitled The Far-Gate Experience will also be displayed. Free Comic Book Day will be followed by Superhero Saturday, an 18-hour movie marathon featuring superhero-themed films, including the uncut, widescreen version of Superman: The Movie, which has never before been seen on broadcast television. SCIFI.COM will feature a special Free Comic Book Day Web page, from April 27 to May 11, offering visitors a chance to win the original color-finished piece of art signed by Adams or one of 15 limited-edition Adams-autographed posters. Free Comic Book Day is an industry promotion to generate more interest in comics.

X-FILES 2: The series may be ending soon, but creator Chris Carter has already started talking about the next big screen X-FILES feature. According to Carter, everyone has expressed interest in doing it, including the studio. “I hope to write it over the summer, prep it over the fall and spring, and shoot it late spring and next summer. I think you would end up seeing it in 2004… I have rough ideas and I’m sort of deciding what to do.”

WOLF LAKE: With a move from oblivion at CBS to the light at UPN, Wolf Lake did quite well in it's first outing last week. In fact, they made the Top 10 List for Genre Series.

SPIDERMAN: Over at www.darkhorizons.com you will find two great interviews: Producer Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad from Marvel Comics.

JEREMIAH: For a preview of this week's episode, "City of Roses", go to http://www.sho.com/jeremiah/.

April 10, 2002

RATINGS: Top 10 SF Syndicated Series: Andromeda 3.1; The X-Files 2.9; Stargate SG-1 2.8; Buffy 2.6; Mutant X 2.6; Beastmaster 2.4; 3rd Rock 2.2; John Edward 2.1; Earth: Final Conflict 1.8, and The Lost World 1.8. Source: Nielsen Galaxy Report, 3/4/02 - 3/10/02.

DEAD ZONE: While the USA upcoming series is based on Stephen King's novel and 1983 movie, Anthony Michael Hall told SCI FI Wire that. The series is "very different," he added. Less emphasis is being placed on the political elements of the story and more has been done to concentrate on the characters. They have taken the Maine setting and expanded upon it, giving you characters from the movie and novel, but expanding on it from there. Hall's co-stars is former Star Trek: Deep Space Nine actor Nicole de Boer as Sarah and Chris Bruno as Bannerman. The series, currently in production in Vancouver, B.C., premieres in June.

BIGGER IS BETTER!!!! Michael Clarke Duncan is already a pretty BIG guy! But to play the role of Kingpin in the upcoming Daredevil movie, producers wanted even more weight put on the actor. "They told me I was too small," Duncan said in an interview while promoting his latest film, The Scorpion King. "I've got to get up to 340 [pounds]. I'm at 325 right now, so I have to gain weight." Production begins on June 17 for the movie, so Duncan has a little time to put on a few more pounds. However, he says that it will not inhibit his action scenes in the movie. "Kingpin is a big guy, but he's very agile." Daredevil is scheduled to open in early 2003.

STAR WARS: With the premiere of Episode II approaching, some extreme fans are already waiting in line! Some of the cast is already out promoting the project. Ewan McGregor, who takes on the role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in ATTACK OF THE CLONES thought THE PHANTOM MENACE kind of flat. ''I think there is much more humor and there is much more color in EPISODE II,” he said. We will soon be able to see for ourselves.

24: I don't know if it's official, but with talk about changing the format for next year, it looks as if "24" will be back! With a number of awards on the shelf and ratings on the rise, the Fox Network is bringing back 24 -- at least that’s the word from co-executive producer Joel Surnow. "We all love the format, but there are problems with it," Surnow said. "It asks a lot of the viewer. It asks them to tune in every week to follow a story. And that is not typically what research says are the viewing habits of the American public." So some changes are afoot. Season two will have each episode center on one 24 hour period, with each new entry relating the thrills of a new day. The climatic final episode begins shooting April 18. Great lengths to keep the finale a secret. Said Surnow to VARIETY, “some great, great surprises and twists that would be ruined if they leaked out. It's like the ending of THE SIXTH SENSE. You don't want to blow it for fans."

X-FILE FANS: The series may be coming to an end -- but the fans of X-Files want to make it a very special event for everyone. On May 10, a group of highly organized supporters will take out six full-page ads in the Hollywood Reporter's final special issue for the show, thanking some of the key individuals who have made the series appointment viewing for millions. Each black-and-white ad costs $2,485 and will pay tribute to one of the five main leads over the years (Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Annabeth Gish, Robert Patrick and Mitch Pileggi), as well as a general cast and crew kudos. Extra funds collected will be donated to a charity that is close to the actor associated with the contributions. So far, over $20,600 has been collectively raised. Donations are still being accepted. You can read more about the individual charities and get links to specific pages for the actors at http://tv.zap2it.com/news/tvnewsdaily.html?25123.

ANDROMEDA: Kevin Sorbo is talking about the explosive conclusion of this season of Andromeda. Check out http://www.syfyportal.com/article/?id=661 for a hint of what lies ahead.

SPIDERMAN: Entertainment Tonight will have an exclusive clip from the upcoming movie TONIGHT! Get more information over at the http://www.etonline.com/movie/a9968.htm page.

DAVID DUCHOVNY: X-Filer David Duchovny has signed on to portray crime novelist James Ellroy (L.A. Confidential) in the upcoming adaptation of the author's memoir, My Dark Places. The film follows Ellroy's search to resolve the unsolved murder of his mother in 1958. Places plans to start production this June in Los Angeles.

April 9, 2002

X-MEN 2: Will Senator Kelly be returning along with all the other X-Men in the sequel movie scheduled for 2003? Bruce Bruce Davison, who brought this character to the screen, told SCI FI Wire that there is a possibility he could be back. Senator Kelly was turned into a mutant and liquefied in X-Men. Whether or not Kelly would be solid or liquid in X2, Davison could not specify. "That's debatable," he joked. Even whether Kelly would remain a senator, Davison could only say, "Possibly."

WITCHBLADE: The second season of this TNT series is set to begin on June 10. The series star, Yancy Butler , told the Comics Continuum Web site that the upcoming second season goes back to the beginning of things. "The first episode is just amazing. We come out of the gate with quite a bang. We actually pick it up prior to Pezzini having the Witchblade. So she has to acquire it all over again."

ENTERPRISE: Everyone has been waiting for the Enterprise episode that will bring Dean Stockwell and Scott Bakula together again. They were wonderful on Quantum Leap -- so you would expect sparks as they encounter each other again -- at opposing ends of the spectrum on April 24. In the episode entitled "Detained", Archer and Mayweather are detained in an internment prison by an alien race. Stockwell's character is Col. Grat, a Tandaran military commander who clashes with Bakula's Archer.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Though spring is just about upon us, people went to theaters this weekend in fair numbers. Here's the ratings for the weekend: 1. PANIC ROOM, $18.2 million this weekend, $58.5 since opening; 2. HIGH CRIMES, $14.0 million this weekend, $14.0 since opening; 3. ICE AGE, $16.5 million this weekend, $140.6 since opening; 4. A BEAUTIFUL MIND, $2.6 million this weekend, $165.0 million since opening.

JAMES BOND: John Cleese had BIG shoes to fill as he now takes over the role of Q in the latest James Bond film, DIE ANOTHER DAY. In his first Bond outing, he was beside legendary Bond gadgeteer Desmond Llewelyn. With his passing, Cleese is now Q. How is he liking the latest adventure? Cleese told the CALGARY SUN. “It was terrific fun. I like the new director and I always got on with Pierce [Brosnan]. He's a very clever actor. He's fascinating because when you're working with him he seems to be doing nothing at all, but then you see him on-screen and he's fantastic." DIE ANOTHER DAY, the 20th Bond film, hits theaters November 22.

Catch some new photos from the movie over at http://www.commanderbond.net/?action=Story&SID=1000 .

SPIDERMAN 2: According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Smallville" executive producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough have been chosen to write the script for the sequel to the upcoming Spiderman film by Sony-owned Columbia Pictures. Sam Raimi has signed on to direct the sequel and production on the film is scheduled to begin in the first couple months of 2003.

24: For those of you have been able to keep up with the fast-paced show, 24, there's a review of the final episodes at http://www.usatoday.com/life/lphoto.htm. The ratings for the show have been climbing, just like the suspense of the show itself!

SPIDERMAN AND PETER DAVID: Star Trek and B5 fans all know Peter David! According to Palm Digital Media, his adaptation of the Spider-Man movie is the #2 best-selling fiction eBook for March of 2002. The novelization (published by Ballentine Books) trailed only Steven King's new book Everything's Eventual and edged out Anne McCaffrey's latest Pern book among others.

BIRDS OF PREY: For months, people have been talking about WB's upcoming live-action adaptation of DC Comics' Birds of Prey. Over at http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0204/09/index.htm you can catch the first cast photo. From left to right in the photo, are Ashley Scott, who plays Helena Kyle, the Huntress; Dina Meyer, who plays Barbara Gordon, Oracle; and Rachel Skarsten, who plays Dinah Lance, the Black Canary. Sherilyn Fenn plays Dr. Harleen Quinzel in the pilot.

April 6:
SCIFI CHANNEL: Bonnie Hammer made a ton of announcements yesterday regarding new projects for the network. Some of the more interesting ones include new mini-series for Battlestar Galactica, Myst (from the video game), The Forever War (based on Joe Haldeman's classic), The Chronicles of Amber (based on Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light, Creatures of Light and Darkness, Home of the Hangman, A Rose For Esslesiastes), and On the Seventh Day (a 7-hour limited series set in 2850AD). SCIFI's recent "Firestarter" movie did quite well in the ratings and may be developed into a continuing series. Sci Fi has ordered 13 episodes of an animated series called "Tripping the Rift," set to debut early next year, and is looking to create a block of what it calls "alternative reality" programming, also for 2003. There were also a number of original movies announced -- but not a peep about anything Babylon 5 related. For a look at all of the upcoming projects, go to http://tv.zap2it.com/news/tvnewsdaily.html?24969.

STAR TREK: Robert Picardo, the holographic Doctor of Star Trek: Voyager, has a new book out! Picardo recently told SCI FI Wire that Voyager guest star Jeff Yagher inspired him to write his new book, Star Trek: Voyager--The Hologram's Handbook. "Jeff made a crack about my writing a book, and a light bulb went off in my head," Picardo said in an interview. Armed with the character he had portrayed for years firmly planted in his head, The Hologram's Handbook is a how-to guide aimed at teaching "incredibly bright sorts the ways in which to get along with lesser beings." Picardo hopes that the Star Trek fans who have missed the Doctor will read the book, "because it's the only new dose of the Doctor to be had. I've also recorded a large section of the book on compact disk, along with a bonus song called ‘The Song of Holograms.' The compact disk benefits the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation." The Hologram's Handbook is available in bookstores now as a trade paperback original from Pocket Books.

COMIC BOOK CALL: Platinum Studio founder and executive producer of Jeremiah, Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, told SCI FI Wire that his company is looking for pitches from comic-book creators for potential television or film properties. Rosenberg said, “One of the things I love is that typically when a comic book creator is coming up with a project, he's developing a bible for the world on how that comic works that may not even show up in those pages. Screenwriters are good at creating a world that ends two hours later. With a comic book, you really create for the future." Men in Black is a prime example of what Platinum has done to bring a comic-book proposal to the big screen.

CHANGES AHEAD

With the hopes of having Babylon 5 grace the airwaves all but dashed by SCIFI, I'll be cutting back a bit on updates for The Zocalo Today. The focus will be moving more to general Science Fiction -- but I'll be sure to post information about Babylon 5 whenever I get some. The weekly e-mail messages will become bi-monthly or monthly, depending on the amount of information available. If you want more focus on a TV series, books, comics, etc., let me know. Write an article. I'll be glad to post it. Thanks again for all your support. I really do appreciate it.

So it looks like Rangers isn't going to go ahead. They haven't said it directly, but networks never do.

Universe Today -- the Babylon 5 Fan Club quarterly can also be found here. The index gives you a rundown of what articles were presented, what interviews published.

If you have magazines that have featured Babylon 5 or Crusade that are not listed, send along their issue number and a note to indicate what the article was about. It would be nice to have a fairly comprehensive listing of Babylon 5 publications here.

I have added a listing of all the Babylon 5 novels and now the B5 comic books to the reference page. If there are other items that you feel should be included, let me know.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

The Art Gallery at The Zocalo Today is open. There are SO MANY talented people in our Babylon 5 community. We have enjoyed works by Todd Brugman and Tye Bourdony on our toons page, but there are a host of others who enjoy drawing, painting, sketching their favorite characters. Here are a few works that have been received. I have some others that will be added soon.

If you would like to share your work with us at The Zocalo Today, please send along a digital photo of your work and I'll begin putting the gallery together. If you do not have your work in digital format, drop me a note and we'll see what we can work out.

CALLING ALL CLUBS

There are a number of fabulous Babylon 5/Crusade Clubs around the world. I'd like to begin listing them here on The Zocalo Today. Eric dropped me a note the other day providing information about a Club in France. I know there are other clubs in Brazil, Germany, Russia -- and who knows how many here in the US. Let's get a listing together. Perhaps we can share resources, even get together as we travel around. Drop the information about your Club to me at sgbruckner@aol.com or bruckner@isnnews.net. That information will be added to the new B5 Fan Club Listing.

BABYLON 5 FAN CLUB

Netter Digital filed for bankruptcy in July of 2000 and all their worldly posessions were auctioned off on December 7. The B5 Fan Club site, Thestation.com and it's store, the Emporium, has been closed.

BABYLON 5 NEWSLETTERS

If you have a newsletter you'd like to have listed at The Zocalo Today, send the information along. It will be posted on the B5 Fan Club/Newsletter page.

MAIL FOR CAST AND CREW

Here's a recent note from JMS on the subject:

Just an FYI to those who've been using the Ventura Blvd. mail drop for fan mail to actors....

As mentioned before, we're phasing out the forwarding of fan mail because we a) don't have the resources, complicated by b) the actors have scattered to the four winds, and it makes it very difficult to get everything to everybody in a timely fashion.

So, having provided prior notice...fan mail to actors coming to the Ventura Blvd. mail drop will be sent back. Mail to actors should be sent via their official fan clubs. I will still be taking mail there, since it's my mailbox, but that's it.

Just so's y'all know and save a few bucks on postage and returns.

JMS' mail can be sent to:

14431 Ventura Boulevard, PMB 260
Sherman Oaks, CA 91423

WARNER BROS:

Warner Bros. Address:

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution
4000 Warner Blvd.
Burbank, CA 91522

Warner Home Video:

Mr. Douglas Wadleigh
VP for Marketing and Special Features
Warner Bros.
4000 Warner Blvd.
