What's New

If you haven't visited B5LR lately, you may want to drop over and see what's going on there. It seems that a number of the "Legend" cast members are having a great time interacting with fans on the message boards. Dylan Neil (Capt. Martel), Warren T.Takeuchi (Kitaro Sasaki), Enid-Raye Adams (Firell) and Dean Marshall (Malcolm Bridges) have all signed onto the site and are answering questions and talking about their characters. This is very cool.

Dylan Neal's interview at prevue magazine is also getting play over at Cinescape.com. That's terrific.

ZOCALO NEWS: We have topped 500,000 hits at the site! This is fantastic. Thanks everyone for your support. It is really appreciated.

Peter Woodward's special "Egypt Beyond The Pyramids" has been nominated for an Emmy award in the category of OUTSTANDING NON-FICTION SPECIAL! This is absolutely terrific. The award ceremony is on September 16.

Dylan Neal talks about his role as Captain David Martel in the "Legend of the Rangers" at http://www.prevuemagazine.com/Articles/Flash.

JMS talked about bringing the Crusade tale to an end with Cinescape and the Rising Stars movie. Details below.

SCIFI.COM continues it's coverage of the new "Legend of the Rangers" with an article on J. Michael Straczynski. In talking with SciFi Weekly, JMS fixes the timeframe for the events outlined in the movie as just a few years after "Objects at Rest" -- shortly after the Interstellar Alliance was formed. He likens the Alliance to King Arthur and his knights, because it was about empire building. "The thing about the Rangers is that they go everywhere, and therefore the entire B5 universe is open to us, and will definitely be involved [in the stories]."

Terry Jones has sent along the next installment of the B5 chronology -- The Earth-Minbari War .
We have a number of special people who read the Zocalo -- and they share a great deal of information -- and interest in the show. One reader, a teacher in Texas, has developed an entire class around Babylon 5! Now that would have made going to school more interesting -- for sure. Pam has written an article describing what she hopes to accomplish this year in bringing Babylon 5 to her students. She is more than willing to share lesson plans she has developed with any other teachers who would like to set up a similar class in their school. Drop over to Special Feature and she how she is planning to create a unique learning environment for her children.

The e-mail version of The Zocalo Today goes out on Saturdays. If you would like to be included on the mailing list, just send a blank note to thezocalo-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. If that doesn't work for you, drop me a note at sgbruckner@aol.com. I can add you manually.

MICHALE CRAWFORD: According to Variety, Michael Crawford, star of Phantom of the Opera returns to Broadway this season in Dance of the Vampires, a musical based on Roman Polanski's 1967 movie spoof The Fearless Vampire Killers. The show opens April 11, 2002, at the Minskoff Theater in New York.

PLANET OF THE APES: With the popularity of the Tim Burton new movie, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that on November 20, it will release Planet of the Apes: The Complete TV Series on DVD. All 14 episodes of the short-lived 1974 series will be included on the four-disc set, with a suggested retail price of $49.95.

TARZAN: According to The Hollywood Reporter, The WB has ordered a new Tarzan pilot. WB TV will produce the pilot, from producer Laura Ziskin and feature-film writers Mike Werb and Michael Colleary. Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' books about Lord Greystoke, the pilot will tell the story of a 17-year-old Tarzan who is sent to live with his aunt in New York after being seriously injured by poachers in the African jungle. The teen Tarzan "becomes the protector of the ultimate urban jungle."

BOND: One of the trademarks of James Bond in the early years was the stunning Aston Martin driven by the super agent. For the upcoming 20th film, Bond will drive a new V12 Vanquish. Sean Connery's Bond drove the legendary Aston Martin DB5 in 1964's Goldfinger. In recent films, Bond has driven BMWs.

MUTANT X: Curious about the upcoming TV series? Pop over to http://www.mutantx.net/. You'll find cast photos and a promo video.

August 23:
WITCHBLADE: TNT has ordered an additional 13 episodes of Witchblade! This is terrific news. The series has been getting better and better. There will be a marathon on TNT August 26, so if you have missed episodes, now is the time to catch up!

AUSTIN POWERS: Mike Myers has finished the script for the third installation of the Austin Powers spy spoof. Tom Cruise will reportedly appear, poking fun at his Ethan Hunt character in the Mission: Impossible movie. Myers is wooing Sean Connery to portray his father in the movie!

X-FILES: The Zap2It website reports that executive producer Frank Spotnitz has assured fans that Gillian Anderson (Scully) will be a full participant as the series begins it's ninth season on November 4. There will be many new story arcs, including one centering on former Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless, who appears in the first four episodes. You can read more over at Cinescape.com

BOND 20: Over at Bond 20 website, you'll find some very interesting tidbits regarding the upcoming Bond movie. The script you'll find there, however, has been pronounced a fake by Eon Productions. Too bad. The premise sounded very interesting.

MATRIX: The Matrix Revisited, a new DVD of supplementary material for Warner Bros. 1999 movie will be released on Nov. 20. Warner has compiled more behind-the-scenes footage and commentary and will release the new material by itself, freeing consumers of the need to buy a new edition of the film. The new DVD will also feature a look at the sequel, The Matrix Reloaded, which is now in production; a first glance at the upcoming Animatrix anime; a preview of the new Web site; interviews with fans; a featurette showcasing the fight choreography of Wu Ping; scene studies; a music montage with never-before-seen footage; DVD-ROM content; and four Easter eggs: "Chase in the Alley," "The Woman in Red," "Gun Training" and "Juke Box." The Matrix Revisited will carry a suggested retail price of $19.98.

MUTANT X: According to Variety, Fox has filed new motions to prevent Tribune Entertainment from using Mutant X as the title of an upcoming syndicated SF series. Fox holds rights to Marvel Comics' X-Men series and feels the series is too similar to X-Men. Mutant X is slated to premiere the week of Oct. 1.

MARK HAMILL: Mark talks about his role in the spoof movie JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK over at Cinescape.com. ENTERPRISE: Over at Trek Today you'll find more information about upcoming episodes of the new Enterprise series.

August 22:

AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON: A special edition DVD is coming out on Sept. 18 for the 20th-anniversary of this classic horror film. David Naughton and co-star Griffin Dunne contributed new audio commentary. The DVD also features a digitally remastered version of the film, interviews with makeup artist Rick Baker and director John Landis, storyboards, a making-of featurette and never-before- seen footage. Naughton said, "They have a 16mm [film] at the first makeup meeting with Rick Baker, when we were getting some preliminary makeup done," he added. "So there's all kinds of neat stuff on it. [It's] new and improved."

HARRY POTTER: The first Harry Potter movie is scheduled to open on November 18. Entertainment Weekly reports that the start date for the second movie based on J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series of children's novels is Nov. 18. They are definitely not wasting any time. I guess they can't afford to -- the kids are getting older!

RATINGS: Top 10 SF Syndicated Series: 3rd Rock 3.3; The X-Files 2.8; Stargate SG-1 2.7; Andromeda 2.3; Xena 2.2; Earth: Final Conflict 2.0; Profiler 2.0; Invisible Man 1.9; Early Edition 1.5, and Outer Limits 1.5.

THE OTHERS: While The Others opened a short while ago, the box office is still going strong. Last week the film was #4 in sales, with $10.9 this weekend, $32.2M since opening . Nicole Kidman, star of the film The Others, told TV Guide Online that she had nightmares while filming the haunted-mansion movie. "I didn't sleep well. I would have nightmares sometimes and strange dreams." Kidman added, "What I like about The Others is that it's not a slasher movie that's full of gore. It sort of gets under your skin in an unsettling way, which I think is more interesting."

LORD OF THE RINGS: DarkHorizons.com has two sets of designs that will be used for the upcoming first film in the trilogy. Both images will be used on promotional items such as posters, T-Shirts, lobby cards, billboards, postcards, etc. later in the year. However, they'll only be used internationally, domestic promo items will have entirely different graphics.

August 21:
ENTERPRISE: The TV Guide Online has a three page article on the upcoming series. Anthony Montgomery, who portrays Travis Mayweather on the upcoming series, has a long interview available at Trek Today. The next issue of TV Guide will have multiple covers for Enterprise.

SPIDERMAN: You've read comments by Sam Raimi about his upcoming Spiderman movie. If you are interest in special effects, you really need to read what John Dykstra, visual effects supervisor for the Spider-Man movie has to say. While at Wizard World Chicago, John talked about animating a character played by an actor in a costume, filming the Green Goblin and a lot more at Comics2Film.

KATE MULGREW: Kate's husband, Cuyahoga County Commissioner Tim Hagan, has become the first Democrat to announce plans to challenge Ohio's Republican Gov. Bob Taft for the office next year. AP reported that Hagan said he hopes Mulgrew (Capt. Janeway) will aid in his fund-raising for next year's race.

TOMB RAIDER SEQUEL: Angelina Jolie, talking to the UK's Daily Record, said, "It looks like it's going to happen. They are writing another one. I am going to be Lara Croft again." No additional information was available on who was writing the script.

SAG PRESIDENCY: The Hollywood Reporter indicates that the Screen Actors Guild nominating committee on Monday selected the candidates it believes are best qualified for the October election, including Valerie Harper for president and just-announced candidate Elliott Gould for recording secretary. Kent McCord was selected for treasurer, the third top office, after he and the others submitted their candidacy to the National Nominating Committee and were interviewed. A number of others, including Melissa Gilbert, are on the ballot as well. They submitted a petition with the signatures of 35 members. Richard Dreyfuss has taken out a petition to run for a national board seat for the Hollywood area.

August 20:
RATINGS: The Top 10 SF Channel Shows: Farscape 1.4; Stargate SG-1 1.2; Raiders of Lost Ark 1.2; Indy and Temple of Doom 1.2; Interceptor Force 1.1; The Chronicle 1.0; Invisible Man 1.0; John Edward 1.0; Blade Runner 1.0, and First Wave 0.9.

GHOST RIDER: Nicholas Cage has been geared up for this role for a long time, but it may not happen. Director Stephen Norrington has signed on to do another film, Tick Tock with Jennifer Lopez. The timing of that movie now conflicts with the director’s planned involvement in GHOST RIDER. GHOST RIDER’s producers (including actor Jon Voight) now must decide on whether or find another director or further delaying the production, either of which could lead to Cage’s departure. Cage is a huge comic book fan and has been interested in this project for a very long time. “The comic book idea for me was very dear to my heart because I grew up learning how to read through comic books, and I’ve always been interested in comic book art and illustration,” Cage said. “Figuring out a way to do that in a movie would be exciting, but that’s a very hard thing to pull off.

STAR TREK X: There has been some apprehension raised about the next Star Trek movie as well. With Patrick Stewart's involvement in the next installation of X-Men, it makes timing of the movie very critical. The sooner the film is committed, the sooner contracts can be signed and pre-production started.

August 19:
BATMAN: Rumor has it that David Boreanez, Angel, is up for consideration as Bruce Wayne/Batman for an upcoming movie. Now that could be interesting!

AUSTIN POWERS: Though the script has not yet been finished, Michael York has been asked to reprise his role in the third "Austin Powers" movie. York plays Basil Exposition, the off-beat high-tech scientist to Mike Myers' Powers. York was in "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" (1997) and the popular sequel "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" (1999) in the role which is a spoof on the James Bond character Q. B5 fans will remember Michael from his "Late Delivery from Avalon" episode!

STAR TREK NEXT GEN: With the cost of DVD players coming down dramatically, everyone is looking for their favorite show or movie on DVD. The latest rumor indicates that Paramount may be releasing Star Trek Next Gen on DVD early in 2002.

CRUSADE MARATHON

SCIFI will conduct a marathon showing of Crusade beginning at 7am on October 8 and running until 8pm -- showing all 13 episodes of the series.

RISING STARS MOVIE

Along with Crusade, JMS talked to Cinescape about his RISING STARS feature film adaptation. “I turned in the fourth draft on the screenplay,” said Straczynski. “MGM, oddly enough, in a press conference to vendors for upcoming licensing mentioned RISING STARS as being on the slate for 2002. So I was surprised; I didn’t know that.” “[The film adapts] the first eight books. It’s 24 issues and each eight issue section is one act of a story covering 64 years. If this does well, we want to do a trilogy of films. If the first movie does well, they can reach into the second two acts of the books and shoot them concurrently.”

RING OF MINOTOUR

Ring of Minotour The sequel to Lives Of The Cat is now available, drawing you into a web of intrigue swirling around an ancient temple, a mysterious ring - and a legend that offers the chance for someone to actually become a god. Listen to Claudia Christian and Pat Tallman in this new audio drama as Jean Richmond's murderous lunge for ultimate power forces Anne Manx to risk her own soul for revenge. Larry Weiner's brilliant new script, the intense reality of the sound production, and a superb original score by Angelo Panetta, combine to bring you whole new worlds of adventure on the biggest screen of all -- your imagination. A little more information is available at http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents regarding the release of B5 on DVD: The first Babylon 5 DVD release is expected on December 4th (SRP $19.98). THIS WEEK'S DISCUSSION TOPICS

The "Legend of the Rangers" telemovie will not air until January. Since SCIFI has stated that the rating numbers for the movie will be MOST important when deciding on moving forward with a series, what do you think SCIFI should be doing to promote the movie? Let's be practical. B5 fans will watch – that's a given. What do we need to do to bring new people in to watch? I've had daydreams on this one. Let's see what you come up with!

Send in your views to either TheZocalo@aol.com or b5web@aol.com.. You can also post your comments on the message board at www.isnnews.net/board. To see what other readers have posted on this and other topics, follow this link to Current Discussion Topic page.

BABYLON 5/CRUSADE CHRONOLOGY

A number of you have written to ask about having an index of the chronology published thusfar. Terry has given permission for this so I'm working on it. You can now find the index to the timeline published thusfar at B5 Chronology Index .

Terry Jones created a FANTASTIC Babylon 5/Crusade Chronology that was published in the Official Babylon 5 magazine. He has not stopped with the end of the series though. He has included items from the latest novels as well as things from the Crusade series. Here's a note from Terry to tell you all about it.

To look at the timeline in a different way, I have been working with Terry Jones on personal chronologies for the Babylon 5 universe. At The Galactic Gateway you will fine Parts 1-4 of the chronology for John Sheridan along with Part 1 for KOSH. Others will follow. I hope you will visit GG and give the chronologies a look.

The latest segment of the B5 chronology features the Earth-Minbari War.

BABYLON 5 REFERENCE PAGES

The Official Babylon 5 Magazine is indexed here as well. With the closure of the magazine in May, you'll want to see which magazines you have -- and which ones you will want to collect. The index may help you make a decision on which ones to choose. The Fan Club has many of the issues at thestation.com , making it very easy to complete your collection.

Universe Today -- the Babylon 5 Fan Club quarterly can also be found here. The index gives you a rundown of what articles were presented, what interviews published.

If you have magazines that have featured Babylon 5 or Crusade that are not listed, send along their issue number and a note to indicate what the article was about. It would be nice to have a fairly comprehensive listing of Babylon 5 publications here.

I have added a listing of all the Babylon 5 novels and now the B5 comic books to the reference page. If there are other items that you feel should be included, let me know.

CALLING ALL CLUBS

Amanda, a member of the club 'Friends of Science Fiction' in Sydney, Australia, dropped a note to say that they will host an event with Marjean Holden on September 9. More information can be found on the convention calendar. If you are in beautiful Sydney, you may want to check out the Club. It meets at: Lidcombe Catholic Club; John St; Lidcombe. If you have questions, drop Amanda a note at Amanda_Beachcroft@msn.com.au.

There are a number of fabulous Babylon 5/Crusade Clubs around the world. I'd like to begin listing them here on The Zocalo Today. Eric dropped me a note the other day providing information about a Club in France. I know there are other clubs in Brazil, Germany, Russia -- and who knows how many here in the US. Let's get a listing together. Perhaps we can share resources, even get together as we travel around. Drop the information about your Club to me at sgbruckner@aol.com or bruckner@isnnews.net. That information will be added to the new B5 Fan Club Listing.

BABYLON 5 FAN CLUB

Sad news. I don't know what the fate of the B5 Fan Club will be. Netter Digital filed for bankruptcy in July and all their worldly posessions were auctioned off on December 7. Thestation.com is back on-line, however the Emporium has been closed.

BABYLON 5 NEWSLETTERS

If you have a newsletter you'd like to have listed at The Zocalo Today, send the information along. It will be posted on the B5 Fan Club/Newsletter page.

Ranger Shane in North Carolina sent in the following note about their "Jumpgate" newsletter.

Hey Sandy! Just wanted to give you an update on the NC B5 group's newsletter, Jumpgate. There's now a dedicated EMail address for submissions - jumpgatemag@bellsouth.net - and any submissions, solicited or un-, can be sent to this address. Also, issues are available for free download at the URL at the bottom of this message.

MAIL FOR CAST AND CREW

Here's a recent note from JMS on the subject:

Just an FYI to those who've been using the Ventura Blvd. mail drop for fan mail to actors....

As mentioned before, we're phasing out the forwarding of fan mail because we a) don't have the resources, complicated by b) the actors have scattered to the four winds, and it makes it very difficult to get everything to everybody in a timely fashion.

So, having provided prior notice...fan mail to actors coming to the Ventura Blvd. mail drop will be sent back. Mail to actors should be sent via their official fan clubs. I will still be taking mail there, since it's my mailbox, but that's it.

Just so's y'all know and save a few bucks on postage and returns.

JMS' mail can be sent to:

14431 Ventura Boulevard, PMB 260
Sherman Oaks, CA 91423

Warner Bros. Address:

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution
4000 Warner Blvd.
Burbank, CA 91522
