Babylon 5 Chronology

Captain John Sheridan begins a 3 year deep space patrol on the E.A.S. Agamemnon.

Commander Sinclair meets independent trader Carolyn Sykes and the two begin a relationship. He doesn’t tell her that he is a Hero of The Line.

March.

The Minbari as co sponsors of Babylon 5, request they have the final say on who governs the station. Rejecting all the top candidates, including Captain John Sheridan and Colonel Ari Ben Zayne, the Minbari select Commander Jeffrey Sinclair for the post. This comes as a surprise to Sinclair and enrages Ben Zayne.

Signs And Portents. Garibaldi's investigation reveals the Minbari chose Sinclair to be governor of the station. Eyes, Ben Zayne was one of the candidates rejected for the post. Points Of Departure establishes Sheridan was the President's second choice for the post and was also rejected.

Monday March 9th. Jeffrey Sinclair takes command as Babylon 5 comes on line. He is personally assured by President Santiago that he has final authority over the Sector where the station is based. Lloyds of London offer odds of five hundred to one against the station lasting a year, and a poll conducted by ISN reveals that seventy five percent of their viewers didn't think the station would last five minutes.

Infection. ISN's Mary Ann Cramer interviews Sinclair on the 2nd anniversary of the station coming on line. A Voice In The Wilderness establishes Sinclair's authority.

Commander Sinclair begins bringing his choice of senior staff aboard the station. He installs Lieutenant Commander Laurel Takashima as his First Officer keeping his promotion promise to her, and Dr Benjamin Kyle as Chief of the station's Med Lab facilities. Sinclair also requests Michael Garibaldi as Chief of Security, a post he doesn't take up until his Mars security assignment finishes. Sinclair's decision is not a popular one with the Senator heading the Babylon 5 Senate Oversight Committee because of Garibaldi being fired from his previous five postings for unspecified personal problems.

The Gathering. Assumes Sinclair chose his senior staff. A Voice In The Wilderness establishes Garibaldi was working Mars Colony security when he was offered the post.

Lieutenant Commander Takashima talks one of the hydroponics workers into setting aside a couple of planters for some coffee seedlings she brought with her.

The Gathering.

Techno-mage Muirne visits Babylon 5, planting probes in the station security systems.

Officer Lou Welch is assigned to the Babylon 5 Security Division.

Eyes. Lou has been on station since it came on line.

With the station coming on line without incident, Thomas Jordan fearing for it's safety, stays aboard. Running out of money he resorts to petty theft to survive, later borrowing money from extortionist and loan shark Desmond "Deuce" Mosichenko.

A group of religious zealots who worked on station construction smuggle a Zarg onboard and into the station's Grey Sector, sealing themselves in with it in a bizarre effort to understand the universe through Minbari religious philosophy.

Grey 17 Is Missing. Assumes Jeremiah and his people worked on the station, sealing themselves in when the station came on line.

Ambassador Delenn of the Minbari Federation comes aboard the station. Unknown to all she is a Satai of the Grey Council, assigned to determine whether humans are the race referred to in an important prophecy made by Valen, and to keep a close watch on Sinclair.

Soul Hunter. Sinclair says he has known Delenn for nearly 2 years. Babylon Squared, Points Of Departure and In The Beginning establish why she is on the station.

Shortly after arriving, Delenn learns of Babylon 4's disappearance 2 years ago. Recognising the station from records of the Great War, she stays silent about this discovery for fear of altering history.

War Without End. Delenn found out about Babylon 4 shortly after she arrived on Babylon 5.

Discovering the Japanese stone garden, Delenn comes to it every other day to sit and meditate. With books on Minbar thousands of pages long about the power of one mind changing the universe, she thinks that the patterns in the sand made by the rock express the concept more simply.

Ambassador Londo Mollari is assigned to Babylon 5. No one else was suited to the role so Emperor Turhan chose him for the post, after the other candidates were eliminated from the selection process. Privately the Centauri regard the post as little more than a joke in view of what happened to the other Babylon stations. Using his new position at home, Londo has his nephew Carn Mollari assigned to Ragesh 3 as head researcher, rather than waste his skills in the military.

Dust To Dust. G'Kar's telepathic assault on Londo reveals the Centauri attitude to Londo's position. Midnight On The Firing Line, assumes Londo had Carn assigned to Ragesh 3 after he became Ambassador.

After 3 years, Captain John Sheridan learns that the dirty tricks squad within EarthGov is called Bureau 13. The man who gave him the name is later found dead.

G'Kar of the Third Circle of the Kha'Ri is assigned to Babylon 5 as Ambassador for Narn. G'Kar believes in the Babylon Project, hoping it will strengthen Narn security and lead to new alliances. He leaves his mate on Narn to take up his post. Ambassador Mollari is absent from the welcoming party for G'Kar as he is gambling in the casino.

The Gathering and And Now For A Word establish G'Kar's reasons for being on the station.

When Londo meets G'Kar, he immediately recognises him from the dream he had about his death 22 years into the future. In the dream Londo is an old man, and he and G'Kar have their hands round each others throats, throttling each other.

Midnight On The Firing Line. In The Coming Of Shadows we get to see Londo's dream, in War Without End the truth behind the dream is revealed.

May.

Terrorists bomb the Io jump gate destroying a transport carrying passengers and killing Morden’s wife and daughter. Morden is shown grief stricken on ISN.

The Shadow Within and The Passing Of The Techno-mages:Casting Shadows.

Eliot Beldon and his daughter Alisa move to Babylon 5 after her graduation from Malcolm X Elementary School. Eliot has been offered a construction job on the station.

Walker Smith the boxer and friend of Michael Garibaldi, after travelling to Mars and Arain Station, gets passage to Earth to fight in a Sport Corp match against opposing title contender Itagi. Some call the fight "World War 4". Walker wins becoming the number one title contender, however Sport Corp have money invested in the title holder Fosaro and tell Walker to retire for a few years.

He refuses, so Sport Corp tamper with his blood test to make it look like he was using adrenos and say he is working for the Syndicate. As a result, Walker loses his licence and begins fighting illegally.

TKO. Walker tells Garibaldi how he lost his licence 2 years ago.

August.

Anna Sheridan takes part in the IPX expedition to Theta Omega 2, headed by Dr Chang. Among some of the artefacts recovered from that world are pieces of Shadow technology. Unaware of what they have found, the artefacts are put in a crate and listed as miscellaneous items.

The Shadow Within. The expedition was 3 months ago.

After a year long search for alien medical technology, Laura Rosen purchases an alien machine from a trader. She learns that the machine is a form of capital punishment whereby convicted criminals sentenced to death, would have their life energy removed and used to heal those dying of terminal illnesses. After several months of study Laura learns that using the machine on a low setting, she could donate some of her life energy to heal others, despite suffering from Lakes Syndrome herself. She doesn't tell her daughter Janice how the machine works in case she stops her from using it.

The Quality Of Mercy. Laura purchased the machine 2 years ago.

October.

A miners strike hit Ganymede.

The Gathering. The strike has entered it’s 3rd month.

Not having seen much of each other throughout the year except by long distance communication, John Sheridan arranges to meet his wife Anna on Centauri Prime to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Wednesday November 18th. At IPX in Geneva Anna Sheridan runs tests on the still unknown Shadow artefacts and the results show they are bio organic in nature. She contacts Dr Chang sharing the results with him.

Psi Cops Bester and Byron pursue a rogue transport to Jupiter and capture it. A sensor reading shows no one is aboard and Bester realises too late it’s a trap and the transport explodes damaging his Starfury. Escorted by Byron and Ysidra back to the Black Omega transport they head for Ganymede.

Thursday November 19th. On Ganymede in the early hours, Alfred Bester is escorted to meet Director Johnston who has arrived to investigate the possibility that another Shadow vessel may be on Ganymede. Confronting him about Bey’s death and the direction Psi Corps had been taken under his directorship, Bester sends the codes to Johnston’s guards, obeying only his commands. To make it look like he was trying to save the Director he has one of the guards shoot him and the other detonates a bomb blowing the room up and killing Johnston. Bester escapes with just the planned injury to his leg. The bomb is blamed on rogues.

At IPX in Geneva, Anna Sheridan asks commercial telepath Terrence Hilliard to scan the piece of still unknown Shadow tech. The device explodes and telepaths in a three mile radius are affected, disrupting their brains. Hilliard is rushed to hospital escorted by Anna. Acting on Psi Corps intelligence within IPX Ms Donne arrives at the hospital to question Anna and request all documents and materials relating to the explosion and the expedition to Theta Omega 2.

Ms Donne contacts Alfred Bester and informs him of the incident. He orders that all the organic technology be confiscated and turned over to the Psi Corps. He tells Ms Donne she is going on the Icarus’ expedition to the Rim.

Psi Corps receive intelligence about a covert operation smuggling telepaths into some of the outer colonies, where it would be harder to find them. Omega Squadron intercept the transport and demand they turn over the telepaths or they would use deadly force. The telepaths are sent in a pod to the capture transport, but instead of withdrawing, Alfred Bester in Omega 1 tells Byron Gordon in Omega 7 that they’ve retrieved this batch but that there may be others and a message needs to sent to them. He negates Byron’s move to escort the transport and orders Omega Squadron to lock their weapons and open fire. Byron does not fire on the unarmed ship but again Bester orders him to or face the consequences, he tells him they are only mundanes. Faced with being blown apart by his own Squadron, Byron opens fire on the ship and the others follow suit. When they get back, he tries to file a report on what happened, but no one wants to know.

Monday November 23rd. Anna Sheridan is offered a place on an IPX survey mission to planet Alpha Omega 3 out on the Rim and accepts the assignment, knowing that she will miss her anniversary celebration on Centauri Prime. Dr Chang briefs the team on how a remote probe discovered the world and they were going to follow up it's report on ancient ruins of some long dead civilisation. In reality the data had originated from EarthForce New Technologies Division after tracking the Shadow vessel recovered from Mars 3 years ago.

Revelations and The Shadow Within and Z'ha'dum.

John Sheridan contacts Anna and tells her something has come up and he cannot make their meeting on Centauri Prime. He forgets to tells Anna that he loves her at the end of his transmission, and she doesn't get round to telling him about the Icarus posting.

Thurdsay November 26th. Anna Sheridan transmits a letter to Elizabeth Sheridan, talking about how excited she is about the Icarus misson next week. She also reveals John cannot make their anniversary on Centauri Prime, but doesn’t have the heart to tell him her news first.

Revelations and The Shadow Within.

Thursday December 3rd. Before the Icarus departs Station Prime on it's 6 month scientific and archaeological expedition to the Rim, Anna Sheridan transmits a full mission inventory to her husband John. The Icarus departs Station Prime to begin it's journey in hyperspace.

In The Shadow Of Z'ha'dum and The Shadow Within.

The Icarus arrives at the Rim, and a transmission is sent to Earth indicating everything is fine. Long range probes are sent ahead to explore the ruins on the surface of Z’ha’dum before a landing is attempted there.

In The Shadow Of Z'ha'dum and The Shadow Within.

The probes activities on Z’ha’dum awaken some of the Shadows hibernating there. Their allies the Drakh, attend to those coming out of their long sleep.

The Passing Of The Techno-mages:Casting Shadows. Herazade was elected 2 years ago.

While travelling through Sector 857, Captain Jack Maynard and his navigator Lieutenant Patrick catch a glimpse of a Shadow vessel.

Conjecture, from A Distant Star. Assumes Maynard's sighting came after the Shadows returned, but before the Cortez began mapping Sector 900 in 2257.

Sunday December 27th. Ambassador Kosh Naranek communicates with Lieutenant Commander Takashima by audio only, on his departure from the Vorlon home world.

The Gathering. Kosh left for the station 8 days ago. Divided Loyalties establishes Kosh arrived on Babylon 5 on Monday January 4th 2257, a day after Lyta Alexander's arrival.

In advance of Ambassador Kosh’s arrival on Babylon 5, the Diplomatic Office send Dr Kyle just enough information to have maintenance adjust the enviroment in his quarters.

Monday December 28th. Negotiating with the Centauri, Carolyn Sykes threatens to blow her merchandise into the sun unless she is paid for it.

The Gathering. Sinclair's comments suggest Carolyn's dealings with the Centauri were a week before she came to Babylon 5.

Over the past year, Michael Garibaldi's relationship with Lise Hampton has become serious, they even talk about marriage a few times, but he is still messed up about having been fired from his previous five postings. With Sinclair's offer of Chief of Security on Babylon 5 still open, he sees a chance to redeem himself and accepts the post.

Lise refuses to leave their life on Mars, amazed that he is taking the job after only meeting Sinclair twice. The couple fall out over it and Garibaldi takes the first transport to Babylon 5. They don't speak again until 2258.

A Voice In The Wilderness. Garibaldi describes how his relationship developed with Lise and how it ended. Babylon Squared, Garibaldi's time flash shows him and Lise falling out before he leaves Mars for Babylon 5.

Members of a radical faction within the Minbari Warrior Caste, hire Tech Runner Del Varner to supply one of their members with a Changeling Net. After purchasing the Net in the Antares Sector, Varner arranges to to meet his buyer in the Tigris Sector. With outstanding warrants for his arrest, Varner risks coming back into Earth Alliance territory as this job will help clear his debts.

Prior to The Gathering.

Friday January 1st. Security Chief Garibaldi duplicates his identicard, in case he gets into trouble in the future.

Finishing her assignment at XenoCorp, commercial telepath Lyta Alexander departs Earth aboard United Spaceways transport Delta Gamma 9 for her assignment on Babylon 5.

2 days prior to The Gathering. Moments Of Transition, Lyta left XenoCorp this year.

Lieutenant Commander Takashima and Dr Kyle are talking about how no one has ever seen a Vorlon outside its encounter suit. Dr Kyle says according to legend one human did see a Vorlon and was turned to stone.

The Gathering. Laurel and Ben were talking the other day.

Carolyn Sykes and her ship The Ulysses stop off in the Damocles Sector en route to Babylon 5.

Prior to The Gathering.

Sunday January 3rd. The Icarus lands on Z'ha'dum and the survey teams which include Anna Sheridan, Morden and Justin, begin to explore. Unknown to those on Earth, some of the survey team are captured by those Shadows already out of hibernation and given the choice of serving them or death. Morden is manipulated by the Shadows into becoming a willing emissary and receives a cranial implant to facilitate communication between him and the Shadows. Anna doesn’t agree with what they are doing, so she is merged with Shadow technology along with other team members. The Icarus is set on automatic and the engines overloaded to blow as it reaches orbit.

Revelations, In The Shadow Of Z'ha'dum, Knives, The Shadow Within and Z'ha'dum outline what happened to the survey team and the Icarus. The Passing Of The Techno-mages:Summoning Light reveals Morden has an implant in his skull.

Probes set up by the Vorlons to monitor Z’ha’dum record the events on the planet’s surface and the information is transmitted to Ambassador Kosh’s ship en route to Babylon 5.

In The Shadow Of Z’ha’dum and The Shadow Within.

Tech Runner Del Varner arrives in the Tigris Sector to hand over the Changeling Net to the Minbari Warrior. When his buyer doesn't turn up, Varner thinks he has missed the meeting and makes for Babylon 5.

The Minbari Warrior follows Varner in a Narn transport and plans to enter the station undetected by using a one man breaching pod. The Narn help the Minbari, hoping that an alliance can be formed between them or the Vorlons. When the transport arrives at Babylon 5 its Captain refuses to submit to a weapons search and permission to dock is denied.

Hours prior to The Gathering.

Commander Sinclair goes to deal with a tourist problem. A report has reached him that an Arnassian female is being courted by a human male who doesn’t know that they eat their mates after sex.

Just prior to The Gathering.

Sunday January 3rd-Friday January 8th.

G’Kar learns of Lyta Alexander’s arrival on the station and runs a check on her genetic records, with the intention of making an offer for access to her DNA to breed a new race of Narn telepaths.

Monday January 4th. The Minbari assassin boards the station using the breaching pod. Lieutenant Commander Takashima hides the pod’s presence attached to the station and gives the assassin the location of Del Varner’s quarters. After killing him and stealing the Changeling Net, the assassin disguises himself as Del Varner and makes for the casino.

With the assassin aboard Babylon 5, the Narn transport Captain communicates with G’Kar agreeing to submit to the weapons search.

Ambassador Delenn requests a meeting with Commmander Sinclair in the Japanese stone garden, to give him a copy of the files the Minbari hold on the Vorlons.

With Ambassador Kosh’s early arrival, Security Chief Garibaldi goes to the casino to collect Londo ready to meet the arriving Ambassador in 2 hours.

Lieutenanat Commander Takashima returns to C and C after the assassination attempt and erases the maintenance log showing the transport tube failure. She then contacts the Vorlon High command to inform them about Ambassador Kosh.

Tuesday January 5th. Having heard something about the assassination attempt on Ambassador Kosh, Carolyn Sykes lets herself into Commander Sinclair’s quarters to wait for him.

Dr Kyle completes his analysis on Ambassador Kosh and discovers a foreign compound that is poisoning him. With his life signs dropping five percent every hour Dr Kyle determines the Ambassador will be dead in 24 hours.

From Lyta’s scan on Kosh, Dr Kyle gathers enough of the poison from the point of entry to determine it is florazine, a rare agent found in only one system in the Damocles Sector.

Wednesday January 6th. With Ambassador Kosh having 10 hours to live and unable to find an antidote for the florazine, Dr Kyle discovers a similar compound he can alter to do the same job and stabilise Kosh’s condition but the job will take 6 to 7 hours to complete.

After meeting with G’Kar in the alien sector, the assassin heads for

Med Lab 1 to make another attempt on Ambassador Kosh’s life.

Stopping off in Security, Commander Sinclair and Security Chief Garibaldi pick up heavy weapons and flak jackets for their pursuit of the assassin in Red 12.

After the pursuit, Security Chief Garibaldi is taken to Med Lab. Dr Kyle checks him out and orders him to rest in his quarters.

Commander Sinclair mulls over the Minbari assassin’s words "There is a hole in your mind". He thinks there may be a connection to his missing 24 hours during the Battle Of The Line.

Friday January 8th. After studying Del Varner’s logs, Commander Sinclair invites G’Kar to his quarters to discuss his theory that the Narn were involved in the assassination attempt, before they attend the formal reception for the recovered Ambassador Kosh.

Author’s note: Garibaldi establishes the date for Lyta and Kosh’s arrival on the station in Divided Loyalties.

Kell of the techno-mage Circle begins hearing from various sources about activity out on the Rim. Fearing the Shadows are on the move again, he begins gathering as much intelligence as he can.

The Passing Of The Techno-mages:Casting Shadows. Assumes Kell began intelligence gathering after the destruction of the Icarus.

Michael Garibaldi begins assembling his Security team. He employs Jefferson T. Conner, giving him a break when nobody else would,and a man called Pastorelli whom he later fixes up with a wife.

Point Of No Return. Garibaldi began putting his team together 3 years ago.

Commander Sinclair begins switching his link off for 10 minutes a day to stand and watch the stars from the observation dome.

Delenn hires Lyta Alexander to mediate some business for her.

Babylon 5 Security officer Morishi goes on a week's leave.

Convictions. Morishi last had leave 3 years ago.

With no communication between Earth and the Icarus, a probe is sent to determine why contact has been lost. An investigation determines that the Icarus blew up in orbit. At the memorial service for the crew, John Sheridan sees his sister Elizabeth. Privately he feels responsible for Anna's death, believing that him cancelling their date drove her to take the survey job. He is also troubled by the fact that he didn't tell her he loved her at the end of their last communication.

Conjecture, from Revelations. Assumes a probe was sent to determine the fate of the Icarus,and further assumes as Sheridan last saw his sister 2 years ago, it was at a memorial service.

More independence groups begin springing up over Mars colony.

An arms smuggling ring is broken up by Earth Security and the passenger ship Chiyoda Ku is impounded for evidence.

Treason. The ship was captured 2 years ago.

Sunday February 7th. Dr Ben Kyle is recalled to Earth. He later returns to the station.

The War Prayer and Divided Loyalties. Ben was recalled a week before Lyta Alexander. Soul Hunter and Walkabout suggest he returned to the station before taking up the post of head of Xenobiological Research at EarthDome.

Sunday February 14th. Lyta Alexander is recalled to Earth.

Divided Loyalties. Lyta was recalled 6 weeks after the attempt on Kosh's life.

Tuesday February 16th. Arriving on Earth, Lyta is interrogated by the Psi Corps about her mind scan on Kosh. Demanding to know what she saw in his mind, all Lyta tells them is she experienced a feeling she couldn't put into words. Lyta omits several other pieces of information, including the fact that ever since her scan on Kosh, she has been drawn to the Vorlon home world and is sure she would be welcomed by their Empire.

Divided Loyalties. Lyta explains what happened when she got to Earth.

March.

Captain John Sheridan on deep patrol on the E.A.S. Agamemnon, sees his last fresh orange.

Points Of Departure. Sheridan last saw a fresh orange almost 2 years ago.

A poll conducted by ISN suggests thirty percent of the planet's population are against the time, money and effort devoted to Babylon 5.

In an unexplored sector of space beyond the St Andre nebula the E.A.S. Agamemnon encounters a large glowing green cloud, a ship of the previously unknown race, the Ti Kar. Hailing them with no response, they move toward it but the Ti Kar ship backs off. They keep doing this for hours until they finally respond. It takes the Agamemnon’s linguistics division a whole day to get even close to translating the Ti Kar language. Unknown to the Agamemnon the

Ti Kar had already translated their language but neglected to tell them. Finally breaking the language barrier and introducing themselves, an invite is extended to Captain Sheridan to come aboard their ship. Once aboard he is amazed at the amount of space on the

Ti Kar ship and they were unlike any other race he had encountered.

What he learns in the 2 days he spends with the Ti Kar, Captain Sheridan is reminded just how wondrous the galaxy really is.

Conjecture, from Spider In The Web.

A group of doctors, among them Stephen Franklin begin hearing things about Psi Corps people weren’t supposed to hear: genetic manipulation, breeding telepaths against their will and Corps relocation camps for rogue telepaths no better than concentration camps. The doctors begin referring latent telepaths to each other, keeping them out of circulation, losing reports and altering medical history files. Unable to keep moving them around the doctors get them away from Earth, filtering them into Babylon 5 on business visas.

April.

Jeffrey Sinclair and Carolyn Sykes end their relationship after he refuses to leave EarthForce and become a trader.

The Parliament of Dreams. Sinclair tells Catherine that they broke up about a year ago. Carolyn wanting Sinclair to leave EarthForce is first mentioned in The Gathering.

Talia Winters receives her last letter from Jason Ironheart.

Mind War. Talia last heard from Jason a year ago.

Jason Ironheart, a Psi Corps instructor in jamming, long range scanning and fringe skills at the academy and another Corps member volunteer for a covert experiment that, they believe will boost their P10 rated psi skills. The experiments begin with the volunteers having between five and fifteen injections a day of chemically modified seratonin and acetycholine, later followed by months of genetic manipulation.

Mind War. Ironheart said he volunteered for the experiments a year ago. The lurker first seen in Chrysalis is revealed to be another participant in A Race Through Dark Places and knew Ironheart. Assumes they volunteered at the same time.

Neeoma Connally of the Docker's Guild complains about the conditions her members are working under. An EarthGov negotiator promises her that more resources will be allocated in next years budget.

June.

Tilar encounters the Shadows and is recruited to work for their cause. They take a DNA sample and begin engineering a chrysalis for him, knowing he was a failed techno-mage.

Sunday July 4th. On the 200th anniversary of the Ares 3 mission, Babylon 5 becomes officially operational. An Artificial Intelligence program is installed in the station computers, but is soon shut down as it has an irritating personality.

Data from J.Michael Straczynski. Ceremonies Of Light And Dark establishes the short life of the A.I. program.

During a layover on Janos 7, Captain Sheridan is stalked by a Grylor,a blind bat winged reptile that almost kills him.

Conjecture, from Knives.

Working for Interplanetary Expeditions on the dead world of Ikarra 7, Dr Vance Hendricks and his team begin excavating to reach a vault buried a mile beneath the planet’s surface.

Infection. Hendricks has been digging for months.

Centauri Emperor Turhan is seen in public for the last time. His ill health keeps him out of the public eye, leaving Prime Minister Malachi to deal with matters of state. Without Turhan’s leadership the Centaurum begin to lose credibility with the people. Desperate to regain it, they secretly hire a Mr Reno to search for The Eye, lost since 2155. Lord Kiro is selected to return The Eye to Centauri Prime when it has been located. Kiro conspires with a group of Raiders to steal The Eye, unaware that the Raiders plan to use him as a hostage to get more money to buy more jump capable ships. Needing to get an unwitting ally within the Shadows ranks, he baits Elizar into accessing his place of power and seeing the evidence for himself, the Shadow origins of their tech and what it means for the techno-mages.
