Jessica Henwick STAR WARS NEWS
Filming may have already wrapped, but J.J. Abrams kept things so secretive on the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens that casting details are still leaking out. Here’s the latest.

Yahoo! is reporting, via a tweet from a BBC News reporter, that 22-year-old actress Jessica Henwick has an unspecified role in the eagerly anticipated sequel. The young British actress is known for her roles in the BBC drama Silk, as well as the 2009 series Spirit Warriors. She’s an up-and-comer in the U.K. but a relative unknown in the U.S.

But who will she be playing? Good guy, bad guy? Jedi, or Sith (or something else)? No clue. The report didn’t include any more details, and knowing J.J., we’d think finer points will be hard to come by until they finally drop an official cast list for this flick and confirm some intel.

Whoever she’s playing, Henwick joins a long list of original stars and newcomers in the sequel. We already know original players Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are back. It sounds like Henwick will be part of the younger, new regime, led by Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, among others.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens Dec. 18, 2015.

Frozen FROZEN SEQUEL?
In September, Walt Disney Animation Studios announced that a new animated short, titled Frozen Fever, was coming to theaters in Spring 2015, but what about a sequel to the 2013 blockbuster? Frozen is the No. 1 animated hit of all time (and fifth of all time of all movies) with $1.274 billion earned at the worldwide box office. In addition to that achievement, merchandise is still selling like crazy, there’s a rumored stage musical in the works and there’s a new attraction coming to the Norway Pavilion in Epcot that will replace the Maelstrom ride. And let’s not forget that the Frozen characters are now also appearing on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time,” in the Disney On Ice shows, and in Disney’s theme parks as well.

In other words, Frozen is everywhere, yet Disney has not said anything about the possibility of another movie. Now, however, it appears that Elsa herself, Idina Menzel, might have slipped up and mentioned the sequel. Talking with The Telegraph, the interviewer mentioned the upcoming short and the rumors of a sequel and stage musical. What could she say about them? “That they’re all in the works, ha ha!”

She was then asked if she was signed up for all of them. “Ah, yeah sure… Not the stage show – I don’t know what will happen with that – but the movie hopefully. We’ll see. I’m just going along for the ride,” she added. Menzel could just be talking about the short, but she did specifically say ‘movie.’

Walt Disney Animation Studios currently has an untitled movie scheduled for November 2018, but we’ll have to wait and see if that will be another feature-length story with Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf.

MINIONS
Universal Pictures and AMC Theatres have released this new teaser for Illumination Entertainment’s Minions, the “Despicable Me” spin-off coming to theaters on July 10, 2015.

Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters–from T. rex to Napoleon–the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he–alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob–ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind… from annihilation.

The Stand STEPHEN KING'S THE STAND
After several years of delays, a theatrical adaptation of Stephen King's beloved novel The Stand is finally moving forward, with Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) writing the screenplay adaptation and directing. Back in June, the filmmaker revealed he is making a three-hour, R-rated movie based on Stephen King's 1152-page book. But last month, Stephen King himself said they are now planning on making multiple movies. Today we finally have some clarification after Josh Boone appeared on Kevin Smith's Hollywood Babble-On podcast, where he confirmed that the adaptation will now span four movies.

Here's what he had to say about the initial script he wrote and how Warner Bros. asked him to expand it, while teasing that some cast members may have already been added and when production may begin.

"I really wanted to do an A-list actor, really grounded, credible version of the movie. I sold them on that and they hired me...I sold them on a single, three hour movie. I went and got [Stephen] King sold on it, everybody's really excited...I told the story non-linear and that was the way I was able to compress that book and get everything into that script. You open with Mother Abigail dying and sending the guys off, and then you jump back in time. So what happened is the script gets finished, I write it in like five months, everybody loves it, (Stephen) King loves it, $87 million is what it was budgeted at, really expensive for a horror drama that doesn't have set pieces. They came back and said 'would you do it as multiple films?' and I said 'fuck yes!' I loved my script, and I was willing to drop it in an instant because you're able to do an even truer version that way. So I think we are going to do like four movies. I can't tell you anything about how we're going to do them, or what's going to be in which movie. I'll just say we are going to do four movies, and we're going to do The Stand at the highest level you can do it at, with a cast that's going to blow people's minds. We've already been talking to lots of people, and have people on board in certain roles that people don't know about. We're looking to go into production next year, maybe in the spring."

We reported in August that Matthew McConaughey is being eyed to play the villainous Randall Flagg, but it isn't known if he has signed on. The original novel was adapted into a four-part The Stand mini-series back in 1994. With four feature films, this could be the most faithful adaptation of the novel yet.

The Stand is in development and stars Nat Wolff. The film is directed by Josh Boone.

Fantastic Four FANTASTIC FOUR
The Rotten Tomatoes page for 20th Century Fox's The Fantastic Four reboot has revealed the first official synopsis. An extended and unofficial synopsis released earlier this month revealed that the title characters access another dimension, a plot point which has been confirmed by this synopsis. Take a look at this plot rundown below, then read on for more information.

"The Fantastic Four, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel's original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. (C) Fox"

The "former friend turned enemy" is most likely Toby Kebbell's Doctor Doom, who we reported last week will be named Victor Doomashev, instead of the character's original comic book name Victor Von Doom. The character is described as an anti-social computer programmer and "hacktivist" who hates Dr. Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathey), the father to both Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan) and Sue Storm (Kate Mara). Miles Teller and Jamie Bell round out the title characters as Reed Richards and Ben Grimm.

It remains to be seen when we'll see the first footage and/or photos from this reboot, with producer Simon Kinberg revealing last month that the filmmakers want to make sure that the "voice of the movie" is just right before giving fans their first look. What do you think about this official synopsis? Chime in with your thoughts below, and stay tuned for more on The Fantastic Four, which hits theaters August 7, 2015.

The Fantastic Four comes to theaters August 7th, 2015 and stars Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, Tim Blake Nelson, Reg E. Cathey. The film is directed by Josh Trank.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS
Forget Best Buy or Old Navy -- Disney and iTunes delivered the best early Christmas present when they dropped the first official trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" on Friday (Nov. 28).

Clocking in at under just 90 seconds, the trailer ticks a lot of boxes on a "Star Wars" fan's checklist. Lightsabers? Check. Stormtrooper (albeit without helmet)? Check. Tatooine desert? Check. Space fights? Check. Most epic film score in history? Big fat check.

What is missing are signs of the promised recognizable faces. Of course they wouldn't show the returning cast (Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill) in the first teaser trailer -- but the trailer is scarce on newcomers as well. Zap2it is placing the bet that "Girls" star Adam Driver is the one skulking through the snowy forest with his red lightsaber at the end, but where is Lupita Nyong'o or "Game of Thrones'" Gwendoline Christie? Where are Chewie, R2-D2 and C-3PO?

The tease is definitely present in this teaser trailer.

The seventh chapter of George Lucas' "Star Wars" epic, directed by J.J. Abrams, will fly into theaters Dec. 18, 2015. Fans can see the trailer on the big screens around the world after this weekend.

Reboot REBOOT SEQUEL
Fans of the 1990s CGI sci-fi series ReBoot have been patiently waiting for the beloved classic to get another shot for decades now. Well, the time has finally arrived.

After having a proposed trilogy of films die in development hell back in 2008, Rainmaker Entertainment has announced plans for a new sequel series dubbed ReBoot: The Guardian Code. The show had a bit of a Tron vibe and was set inside a 3D world housed in a mainframe computer.

The original series was developed in Canada and debuted in 1994. It ran for 48 geekily awesome episodes on YTV in Canada and was picked up in the U.S. and ran as part of ABC's kids' programming block before it was dropped from the schedule.

No word on exactly what the sequel series’ plot will revolve around, but some reports say the original characters from the 1990s series will play a major role. Other reports say it’ll be dealing with (mostly) new characters, so take that with a grain of salt.

Regardless, we’re glad to see this mostly forgotten bit of 1990s nostalgia is getting another shot at life. The show was a blast and insanely ambitious for the technology available at the time. Here’s hoping the reboot can capture at least some of that magic.

THE PYRAMID
You'd think the whole Mummy's Curse plotline would be totally played out by now, but Gregory Levasseur's fun new horror flick, The Pyramid, mines some new territory by tossing in a found-footage feel and dumping a labyrinth of murdering monsters onto the cast.

Here's the latest trailer, with the formula of a newly revealed pyramid invaded by a curious crew and mixed until bloody used to fine effect. The producer, Alexandre Aja, has some respectable horror creds with Piranha 3D, The Hills Have Eyes and Daniel Radcliffe's latest, Horns, so this shocking little morsel shows

. Check out the official synopsis from 20th Century Fox:

The ancient wonders of the world have long cursed explorers who've dared to uncover their secrets. But a team of U.S. archaeologists gets more than they bargained for when they discover a lost pyramid unlike any other in the Egyptian desert. As they unlock the horrific secrets buried within, they realize they aren't just trapped, they are being hunted.

Starring Ashley Hinshaw, James Buckley, Denis O'Hare and Christa-Marie Nicola, The Pyramid opens on Dec. 5, 2014.

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE
We’ve been cautiously optimistic about Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming comic-inspired flick Kingsman: The Secret Service, but the anticipation meter is officially ratcheted up to 11.

The latest trailer for the spy-fi flick, directed by Vaughn and based on Mark Millar’s comic of the same name, looks like the self-aware, anti-James Bond we never knew we wanted. Though previous trailers played it straight(ish), the latest cut lets loose with the weirdness — to fantastic effect.

Vaughn and Millar previously collaborated on the stellar Kick-Ass, directed by Vaughn and based on Millar’s comic, and it looks like they’re close to replicating that same weird-awesome magic once again. From random puppies to crazy weapons and Samuel L. Jackson’s lisp, this movie looks like a ton of fun. Seriously, the new footage casts this film in a whole new light.

Based on the comic concept, the film tells the story of a secret international spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. Kingsman stars Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine and Taron Egerton.

The film is set to open Feb. 13, 2015, and we’ve just officially added it to our calendar.

THE HOBBIT
Sure, Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy might be a bit on the bloated side, but it still comes from one heck of a respected legacy via the seminal Lord of the Rings films.

With The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies opening in a few weeks, Warner Bros. has released a new trailer looking back on the legacy of both the Hobbit franchise and the Lord of the Rings films that spawned it.

The trailer includes key moments from both franchises, and honestly, it kind of makes us jones for the good ol’ days when Frodo and the Fellowship were trekking to Mordor. The Hobbit trilogy has been a fun spectacle, but Tolkien’s version of The Hobbit was never conceived to be an epic to rival Lord of the Rings. It’s a smaller story, and that’s OK, but that seems to have gotten lost in the need to go bigger to create something that can stand toe to toe with the epic clashes in Lord of the Rings. That parity has never been more apparent than here, where both franchises crash together in a mishmash of epic-ness.

The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies opens Dec. 17, 2014.

Supergirl-Flash SUPERGIRL
Even though that upcoming Supergirl TV series will be on a different network than Arrow and The Flash, it looks like their worlds may be about to collide.

KSiteTV has stumbled upon a very interesting tidbit in the latest issue of Entertainment Weely that seems to indicate that even though Supergirl will be on CBS -- and Arrow and The Flash are both on The CW -- we can’t rule out some epic crossovers since the three DC comics superhero series may very well inhabit the same TV universe.

Supergirl (which was actually passed over by The CW) is currently being developed by Greg Berlanti, who is also a producer on both Arrow and The Flash.

Here’s said tidbit:

“Later in the afternoon at his other office on the Warner Bros. lot, Berlanti meets with fellow producer Ali Adler and Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood to go over looks for their upcoming revamp of Supergirl. The show will follow 24-year-old Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, and with a twist that that could melt fanboy brains, Berlanti says it's possible this Supergirl could enter the worlds of Arrow and The Flash.”

There you have it. That should make the geeks in all of us very, very happy.

GAME OF THRONES
The folks at HBO are known to play the long game, and they’re kicking off the marketing campaign for Game of Thrones’s fifth season a full five months early.

The network has debuted a tantalizingly creepy little teaser clip, with some stark visuals and characters that look to set up the direction of the new season. The next season promises to be a game-changer for the hit fantasy series, considering they’ve caught up with George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series that inspired the show in several story arcs.

We won’t delve into exactly what the clip shows, for fear of potential spoilers, but those who have read the books will likely spot some hints and visual cues. Along with the teaser, the studio has also launched a new viral website at ThreeEyedRaven.com that promises to divvy out hints and intel for fans. Well played, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Well played.

No release date has been set, but the fifth season of Game of Thrones will likely arrive on HBO in March or April.

Universal Pictures and AMC Theatres have released this new teaser for Illumination Entertainment’s Minions, the “Despicable Me” spin-off coming to theaters on July 10, 2015.

Korra THE LEGEND OF KORRA
Nickelodeon has decided "The Legend of Korra" will get to air its final episodes on TV.

The network originally moved the series to online only this summer but its sister network Nicktoons will carry the last few episodes of "Korra" beginning Friday (Nov. 28). The announcement was made via Facebook with a trailer for the upcoming episode. Nicktoons will air new episodes each Friday leading up to the series finale in December.

According to the statement the episodes will also premiere online at Nick.com.

The fan reaction has been mixed about the announcement by the look of the Facebook comments. Overall majority of "The Legend of Korra" viewers seem to be frustrated with how back and forth the network has been with the show. They wish more money had been spent to market the show in the first place rather than on moving it around to different platforms.

Still, the move to online was a relief to some who found it difficult to catch the show as it aired each week. Moving online felt more convenient -- but Nickelodeon placing the show online after it airs as many networks now do could have satisfied both parties. At the very least fans will get the best of both worlds for the final episodes of Book 4.

Unfortunately, creators Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino have said that when "Korra" ends it will probably be the end of "Avatar" projects. While they are open to the idea of one-offs in the future, they have no plans to create another long running "Avatar" series.

Hopefully, Nickelodeon bringing the show back to TV for its final episode will feel like a proper send off for fans that have stuck with the show through all of its changes.

"The Legend of Korra" Book 4, episode 9 premieres on Nicktoons on Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

JURASSIC WORLD
It took more than a decade, but the fourth installment in the blockbuster Jurassic Park franchise will finally hit theaters next summer, and it's boasting quite a bit of talent both in front of and behind the camera. Behind the camera, the film marks the first big-budget effort from director Colin Trevorrow, who gave us the acclaimed time-travel comedy Safety Not Guaranteed in 2012, and the story was co-developed by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, a writing team that recently helped revitalize the Planet of the Apes franchise. In front of the camera, the film features 2014's breakout blockbuster star Chris Pratt, as well as Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jake Johnson, Judy Greer and more.

Set 22 years after the first Jurassic Park, the film will return us to Isla Nublar, and to what's become a vital, fully functioning and successful dinosaur theme park, now known as Jurassic World. The trailer begins with a kind of park tour as we follow two awestruck boys (Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins) on their dinosaur encounters. It all looks quite spectacular, until we learn that behind the scenes, researchers at the park have used their access to dinosaur genetic material to create something new. Pratt's character Owen sums that up nicely: "Probably not a good idea."

From there, the trailer transitions to some good old-fashioned Jurassic Park terror, including teaser shots of the creature, a haunting piano score and Chris Pratt riding a motorcycle through a herd of velociraptors.

SALEM: THE WITCH WAR
The first eerie teaser trailer for the upcoming second season of WGN America's hit series Salem is finally here.

The second season will see the ruthless witch -- and Salem's most powerful enchantress -- Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery) declaring the Witch War that will be at the epicenter of season two.

Here’s a short synopsis of the upcoming season:

In “Salem” season two, the Grand Rite triggered at the end of last season is now underway and death is in the air. In order to bring her plan to completion, Mary must not only control Captain John Alden (Shane West, “Nikita,” “ER”) and the citizens of Salem, but also those lurking in the shadows who seek the power she wields.

Created and written by Star Trek's (The Next Generation, Voyager, Enterprise) Brannon Braga and Adam Simon, the 13-episode second season of Salem will hit our TV screens in April of 2015.

JUPITER ASCENDING
In case you’ve forgotten, the Wachowskis’ sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending is still a thing that is happening — and here’s a new trailer to prove it.

The film was originally supposed to open this past July, but Warner Bros. decided to bump it all the way to Feb. 6, 2015, to allow some additional time on effects, editing and development. Jupiter Ascending stars Mila Kunis as a long-lost space princess and Channing Tatum as an alien with weird ears.

Admittedly, we could see why that’d be a weird pitch and they’d want to take a bit of time to hone the promo plan and tinker a bit. The first few trailers didn’t help much, and were somewhat confusing and didn’t show off enough of the wild sci-fi stuff that is clearly part of the story. Luckily, this latest trailer aims to remedy that.

The new French trailer below is loaded with new footage, including a boatload of space stuff and twisty sci-fi shots. It still looks strange, but it at least looks cool in a Fifth Element kind of way.

PAN
Today we get our first look at a new take on Peter Pan -- and this time it's a prequel.

Yes, that's right, Pan is an origin story for not just little Peter (Levi Miller) but also for Captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund), who's portrayed here as a sort of swaggering, rogueish Indiana Jones-type hero. That leaves the bad-guy duties to Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, complete with unfortunate hairdo choices and a ship that actually flies through the air.

I have to say that, in some ways, this looks like every other fairy tale/children's classic "re-imagining" that has come down the pipeline in recent years, complete with Peter himself being the "chosen one" and lots of action, weapons and special effects where none previously existed in the text.

But at the same time, director Joe Wright has delivered a lot of quality films -- including the criminally underseen sci-fi/spy mashup Hanna -- and always has a lot of stylistic tricks up his sleeve, so we'll see what he brings to the party here. And of course, there's always Jackman, who livens up every movie he's in.

Pan, which also stars Rooney Mara, Amanda Seyfried, Kathy Burke and others, wings its way into theaters July 17, 2015.

Doctor Who Christmas DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
Some tantalizing new tidbits about the Doctor's latest Christmas adventure have emerged.

First, the title. Written by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and guest-starring Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) in the jolly good role of Santa Claus -- with Nathan McMullen and Dan Starkey (who also plays our favorite Sontaran, Commander Strax) as his elves, named respectively Wolf and Ian -- the Xmas yuletide special is titled “Last Christmas.”

But a last Christmas for whom? Could this be another hint that Jenna Coleman's time on the show is ticking down?

The BBC has also released an official short synopsis that seems to answer that question, as well as some promo art for the upcoming festive episode.

Here's the synopsis:

The Doctor and Clara face their Last Christmas. Trapped on an Arctic base, under attack from terrifying creatures, who are you going to call? Santa Claus!

FLASH-ARROW CROSSOVER EPISODE
Forget Batman vs. Superman. Forget Captain America vs. Iron Man.

'The Flash' Villain Teases His "Monster" Character: He's "An Electrical Vampire" If you're ready to get amped for Flash vs. Arrow, we've got the promo for you. There's action, there's comedy — there's plenty of two superfriends trying to bash each other to bits.

Watch the full, two-part crossover during the Dec. 2 episode of The Flash and the Dec. 3 episode of Arrow. And check out what the shows' cast and creators told The Hollywood Reporter about the TV event here.

<ichelle MacLaren WONDER WOMAN - FINDS A DIRECTOR
The Wonder Woman movie has now officially snagged a director.

Warner Bros. began its search for a Wonder Woman director over the summer, shortly before announcing an ambitious slate of DC Comics films that will include the 2017 release of the character's first ever solo film. Many fans, as well as people involved in the selection process, were hoping a woman would direct the film, and earlier this month Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead director Michelle MacLaren emerged as the rumored frontrunner in Warners' search.

Now, it looks to be official. According to The Hollywood Reporter, MacLaren has signed on to helm the 2017 flick, making her the first woman to direct a superhero film since this age of shared-universe storytelling began. MacLaren was apparently a favorite for the job during the summer, but Warner Bros. was also interested in looking at other filmmakers, so MacLaren's name sort of drifted to the back burner as the search widened. Now, she's the only choice. She will also reportedly work alongside still-unnamed writers to develop the script.

MacLaren has a long history of success directing and producing television, including some pretty epic genre work. She's best known for Breaking Bad, for which she received two Emmy nominations for directing and shares two Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series as one of the show's executive producers, but she's also worked on The X-Files, The Walking Dead, The Leftovers, and Game of Thrones, where she's directed four episodes over the last two seasons, including the powerful "The Bear and the Maiden Fair." This will be her first crack at a big-budget Hollywood franchise flick, but if you want proof that she's got what it takes, she's left decades of work for you to look at.

So, Wonder Woman has a star, a director, and a release date.

BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT
The Arkham series has become one of the most acclaimed franchises in modern video games, and Batman’s next adventure looks like it might be the wildest yet.

The next sequel in the franchise, Batman: Arkham Knight, pits the Dark Knight up against classic foes such as Two-Face, Harley Quinn and Scarecrow — plus a full-on army. The latest trailer focuses on the Ace Chemicals Infiltration section of the game, and serves as a nice example for the gameplay mechanics and insane visual prowess on display.

The trailer shows Batman duking it out with a ton of baddies, while using his superior sneaking skills to infiltrate a complex. It’s easy to get lost in the action, just kicking back and watching it unfold. Seriously, if you squint just a bit you’ll think this could be a deleted scene from The Dark Knight. It looks that good.

Keep an eye out, and the trailer also offers a tantalizing peek at the game’s titular baddie, dubbed the Arkham Knight, who aims to cause trouble for Bruce Wayne’s alter ego this go ‘round.

Batman: Arkham Knight hit shelves June 2, 2015 on Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and PC.

Oscar Isaac X-MEN: APOCALPYSE
The Big Bad for the next X-Men adventure has been cast.

Ever since it was announced that Fox, director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg would follow up X-Men: Days of Future Past with X-Men: Apocalypse, we've been wondering who would eventually play Apocalypse himself. The immortal, basically impossible-to-kill supervillain will be one of the biggest villains the X-Men have faced onscreen yet, if not the biggest, so an actor with real presence is needed, and now Singer seems to have found him.

Variety reports that Academy Award nominee Oscar Isaac is set to play Apocalypse in the film, joining a cast that already includes Michael Fassbender as Magneto, James McAvoy as Professor Xavier and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. According to the report, Singer's been meeting with several actors for the role in recent weeks, but always considered Isaac a favorite for the job.

After roles in films like Sucker Punch and Robin Hood, Isaac broke out in a big way last year with his performance in Inside Llewyn Davis, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, as well as numerous other awards and honors from critics. His performance in the upcoming A Most Violent Year is already drawing critical praise and could earn him even more honors as awards season heats up, and if you've been hearing his name a lot around here lately, it's because he's also one of the leads in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

So Bryan Singer has landed his villain and Oscar Isaac has added another major genre franchise to his resume.

X-Men: Apocalypse will hit theaters on May 27, 2016.

THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR
After appearing as the comic relief in three of DreamWorks Animation’s “Madagascar” movies, The Penguins of Madagascar are finally getting their own movie, and we’ll have a chance to see Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private as they’re meant to be seen, in their full secret agent action-comedy glory. The last time we saw the Penguins they were in Europe trying to get back home, but since then, they’ve branched off on their own to face the very evil menace of one Dr. Octavius Brine (voiced by John Malkovich), who happens to be someone from the penguin’s past. Helping them out, or at least trying to, is the undercover animal protection organization known as the North Wind, including their husky canine leader only known as CLASSIFIED (Benedict Cumberbatch) along with his associate Short Fuse (Ken Jeong). Now normally, one might be skeptical about a company like DreamWorks Animation doing a spin-off movie from a successful series, but The Penguins of Madagascar is as clever and subversive as it is funny. It’s almost as if Tom McGrath, the voice of Skipper and the co-director of the “Madagascar” movies, had been hatching his own evil plan to get the characters voiced by himself and some of his colleagues in the DWA animation department into their own movie all along. ComingSoon.net asked him about this at the New York junket for the movie where he was paired with doctor-turned-comedian Ken Jeong—the two of them clearly having way too much fun together—plus we also talked with Cumberbatch and Malkovich. The Penguins of Madagascar opens nationwide on Wednesday, November 26.

Bond 23 BOND 24
The 24th installment of the James Bond franchise, set to start shooting at Pinewood Shepperton outside of London in the coming weeks, will shoot some scenes in Rome.

The film will be Daniel Craig’s fourth turn as James Bond after taking the title role in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall. Sam Mendes is returning to direct.

While details are still under wraps, a source confirmed that shooting was planned for Rome. Italian news agency ANSA reported that Rome will host no less than three key action scenes for the upcoming film. Several night-time high-speed car chases are planned through the historical center’s narrow, winding streets, as well as on main thoroughfare Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, with one car ending up in the Tibur river, it reported.

Another high-speed car chase will reportedly result in an iconic Fiat 500 getting crushed in Borgo Vittorio, near the Vatican. And perhaps most memorably, Bond will parachute from a helicopter onto Ponte Sisto, a 15th century pedestrian bridge that connects Trastevere to the center, ANSA said.

There will also be scenes shot outside of Rome, in Campania, in the Royal Palace of Caserta, known as the Versailles of Italy, according to the report. The new James Bond project is expected to hit theaters in late 2015.

Production in Italy will run Feb. 19-March 12. Having 007 in Rome marks a major win for the city’s film industry. Production offices will be based at the Cinecitta studios.

Cinecitta is currently hosting several other large Hollywood productions. Anne Rice project Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt was recently shot in the city, as was Everest starring Keira Knightley, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robin Wright and Josh Brolin. And Ben Hur and Ben Stiller's Zoolander 2 will also commence shooting in February.

Sources close to the production told THR that key filming for the movie will also take place in Morocco.

Jekyll-Hyde JEKYLL & HYDE
Just a week after it announced new six-part crime drama called The Frankenstein Chronicles, starring Sean Bean, U.K. TV giant ITV said Monday that it had ordered a new action-adventure series based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s book The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Written and executive produced by Charlie Higson, Jekyll & Hyde will be a 10-part series that is set to “exude mystery, fantasy, horror and sci-fi,” according to a statement. The story will be set in 1930s London during a time of “Hollywood glamor, aerodynamic cars and monster movies” and will focus on Robert Jekyll, the grandson of the original doctor, on a quest to discover the nature of his curse, the company said.

"It’s an exciting challenge to take Stevenson’s work and use it as the basis for a new Jekyll & Hyde," said Higson, who rose to fame in the 1990s on BBC sketch comedy show The Fast Show before becoming an author of young adult fiction. "So many superheroes with secret dual personalities have been brought to life thanks to Jekyll & Hyde. He’s one of literature's most important and influential characters and it’s a privilege to be rediscovering him."

Jekyll & Hyde will be directed by Colin Teague (Being Human, Sinbad), and will start production in India in January before moving to London for shooting between February and July. Casting decisions are expected in the coming weeks.

Goosebumps GOOSEBUMPS
We still have a while to go before Columbia Pictures releases the Goosebumps movie in theaters in April 2016, but they have already kicked off a Create a Meme contest in which they reveal many of the monsters in the film.

Directed by Rob Letterman, the big screen adaptation stars Jack Black, Amy Ryan, Ken Marino, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Jillian Bell and Ryan Lee.

Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

Fantastic Beasts FANTASTIC BEASTS
J.K. Rowling has completed the script for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first film in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming trilogy, producer David Heyman told The Telegraph.

At the premiere of his new film, Paddington, Heyman said that “Jo [Rowling] has written a wonderful script. It’s early stages. David Yates is directing and we start filming next year. I’m just really excited about it.”

The November 18, 2016 release is inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and the adventures of the book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander. Set in the wizarding world, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted Harry Potter fans. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.

The second and third “Fantastic Beasts” films are scheduled for release on November 16, 2018 and November 20, 2020.

JURASSIC WORLD
With just four days to go before the full trailer premieres, Universal Pictures has debuted a brief teaser showing the first footage from Jurassic World.

Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on June 12, 2015, the anticipated movie stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D’Onofrio, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Judy Greer, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus and Andy Buckley.

Jurassic World is a sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of the original Jurassic Park.

Mockingjay WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
After ten months with just a single movie grossing more than $300 million domestically, all eyes were on the third installment of Suzanne Collins’ blockbuster franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (Lionsgate) to “save” the box office. It’s not like we haven’t had numerous blockbusters over the course of the year with many $90 to 100 million openers, but the only movie to cross the $300 million mark domestically was Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, and that was very much a surprise sleeper which did far better than anyone expected.

With most of the cast returning from last year’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, including Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in his final performance, the first part of the finale had them joined by Julianne Moore, Natalie Dormer and a few others. It was mainly seen as a set-up for the true finale next year, which may account for its softer opening than expected.

It opened on Friday with $55 million, including $17 million from Thursday previews, and that was already down from Catching Fire, which made more than $70 million its opening day. With a small drop on Saturday, The Hunger Games ended up with an estimated $123 million in 4,151 theaters or $29,631 per location. That’s $35 million less than the $158 million opening weekend for Catching Fire and almost $30 million less than the opening for the original The Hunger Games back in March 2012. Even so, Mockingjay – Part 1 can claim the largest opening weekend of the year, surpassing Transformers: Age of Extinction‘s $100 million opening, and it’s one of the Top 15 domestic openings of all time.

Internationally, the latest “Hunger Games” fared better than the previous movie, opening in 85 overseas markets where it grossed $152 million, up 4% from “Catching Fire.” Some of the standouts included the UK with nearly $20 million, Germany with $13.7 million, Mexico with $12.1 million, Russia with $11.1 million and Australia with $10.1 million. Added together, that’s an absolutely incredible global opening weekend of $275 million.

Remaining in second place with a decent 58% hold from last week was the animated adventure Big Hero 6 (Walt Disney Animation), which took in $20.1 million to bring its domestic total to $135.7 million. It added another $7 million internationally to take its global total to $185 million, although it’s only in 19% of the rest of the world so far.

Christopher Nolan’s star-studded outer space epic Interstellar (Paramount) also held its place in third with $15.1 million, down 47%, as it brought its domestic gross to $120.7 million.

Last week’s #1, the reunion of the Farrelly Brothers with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels for Dumb and Dumber To (Universal) took a nasty tumble to fourth place with $13.8 million, down a shocking 62%, showing that most of the fans looking forward to see it rushed out opening weekend. It has grossed $57.5 million and it’s dubious that it will see $100 million even with the holidays coming up.

David Fincher’s hit thriller Gone Girl (20th Century Fox) remained in fifth place–its 8th weekend in the Top 5–with $2.8 million and $156.8 million grossed so far in North America alone.

Gina Prince-Blythewood’s romantic drama Beyond the Lights (Relativity), starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker, took sixth place with $2.6 million, down 58% from its opening weekend thanks to the “Hunger Games” competition, with $10.1 million total.

The Bill Murray-Melissa McCarthy sleeper hit St. Vincent (TWC) added another $2.3 million in its seventh weekend in theaters, bringing its own total to $36.6 million.

The rest of the Top 10 made less than $2 million, which allowed Focus Features to get their awards contender The Theory of Everything, starring Eddie Redmayne as Professor Stephen Hawking and Felicity Jones as his wife Jane, into the Top 10 with just $1.5 million in 150 theaters. We can probably expect that one to go even wider for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend to keep the momentum going for the early awards and nominations announced the following week.

As one might expect, with Mockingjay not doing as well as last year’s Catching Fire, the box office was down about 14% ($30 million) from this same weekend last year, the first down weekend in months, with the Top 10 films accounting for about $185 million.

LEGO Movie LEGO MOVIE
Han Solo, C-3PO and Lando Calrissian (as well as the Millennium Falcon) all had a part in The LEGO Movie. But did you know that R2-D2 -- who ultimately never made it in -- was actually meant to have a big role?

That’s what creators Phil Ford and Chris Miller recently revealed. In an interview with Yahoo!, Lord and Miller said that they’d written a major role for everyone’s favorite Star Wars Astromech droid in the first draft of the film, but that they weren’t able to obtain the rights from Disney.

“He was a Batman-level character,” Miller said. As you guys may know, there was quite a bit of awesome Batman/Bruce Wayne (voiced by Will Arnett) screen time in the film. He was a Master Builder, and Wyldstyle's (Elizabeth Banks) boyfriend, who helped Emmet (Chris Pratt) on his quest.

Lord added: “We figured we could get R2-D2 because his voice wasn’t a human being.”

When Miller and Lord started working on The LEGO Movie script, the two weren't actually concerned with which studios owned which characters. Their aim was to bring characters from various studios into one movie a la Who Framed Roger Rabbit. However, they unfortunately hit a bit of a copyright snag with R2-D2 ...

Miller explained, “A kid doesn’t have lawyers that won’t allow the toys to play together.”

Here you go. That's why we had no R2-D2 in The LEGO Movie. At least we'll get to see the little bugger droid in the next Star Wars flick. Everything is awesome, right?

ORIGINAL BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
What do you get when you combine the retro-geek awesomeness of the original Battlestar Galactica with new effects on par with Ronald D. Moore’s recent reboot of the series? This, and it’s glorious.

Longtime VFX guru Adam “Mojo” Lebowitz is behind a new push to release a restored collection of the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica series with brand-new effects. To help demo the concept, he’s developer a stellar pitch reel to show how the new effects would mesh with the restored footage.

The proposal is being compared to the recent restoration of Star Trek: The Original Series with new effects and restored footage to make the old reels as clean and clear as possible. As Ain’t It Cool News notes, the big plus here is that some fresh FX work could finally replace the largely recycled stock footage that permeated the original series.

Considering that Moore’s seminal reimagining of the franchise from the early 2000s brought new respect to the sci-fi classic, while a big-screen reboot is actively in development, it might be the perfect time to bring the original series back to life for a new audience.

Coupled with the recent, tragic passing of original creator Glen A. Larson, a restored release could be a perfect tribute to the enduring franchise he helped birth.

INTO THE WOODS
Walt Disney Studios has released this new featurette on Into the Woods, the musical adaptation starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp, Lilla Crawford, Daniel Huttlestone, Tracey Ullman, Christine Baranski, MacKenzie Mauzy, Billy Magnussen, Tammy Blanchard, Lucy Punch, Richard Glover, Frances de la Tour, Simon Russell Beale, Joanna Riding and Annette Crosbie.

This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel?all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

GOTHAM
We’re currently nine episodes in on the first season of FOX’s new hit DC Comics series, “Gotham,” and, if you’ve been watching, you know that events have been set in motion that will be drivingthe show forward throughout the rest of the season (at least). It’s a safe bet that next week’s episode, titled “Lovecraft,” will offer a fair share of twists and turns, as it represents the show’s midseason finale. To tease the event, FOX has just released a promo and five clips from “Lovecraft,” totaling about eight minutes of footage from the November 24 episode.

“Selina leads a new friend on a perilous journey through Gotham to evade the assassins who are on her trail,” reads the episode’s official description. “Following a misstep, Gordon is reassigned to duty at Arkham Asylum.”

Based upon characters published by DC Entertainment and produced by Warner Bros. Television, “Gotham” is an origin story of the great DC Comics super-villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. Starring Ben McKenzie (“Southland,” “The O.C.”), Donal Logue (“Sons of Anarchy,” “Terriers,” “Vikings,” “Copper”) and Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix films, “HawthoRNe”), “Gotham” follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes.

Guest stars for “Lovecraft” include Richard Kind as Mayor James, Drew Powell as Butch Gilzean, Mackenzie Leigh as Liza, Nicholas D’Agosto as Harvey Dent, Leslie Odom Jr. as Ian Hargrove and Luke Forbes as John Hargrove.

“Gotham” airs Mondays at 8 P.M. on FOX.

Matt Smith PATIENT ZERO
British actor Matt Smith is stepping his game up. After leaving BBC's Doctor Who, he's snagged one feature role after another. The latest is called Patient Zero, and it co-stars Game of Thrones alum Natalie Dormer.

In the film, "an unprecedented global pandemic of a super strain of rabies has resulted in the evolution of a new species driven by violence. An inexplicably immune human survivor with the ability to communicate with this new species must spearhead a hunt for Patient Zero in order to find a cure to save his infected wife and humanity."

The premise sounds like a mix of 28 Days Later, I Am Legend andWorld War Z. There's no word on which role Smith will play. One might assume he's been cast as the human survivor, although we think it would be interesting if he were Patient Zero himself.

Stefan Ruzowitzky will direct Patient Zero from a script written by Mike Le. This is the latest in a long line of action-heavy sci-fi projects Smith has signed on for. His other upcoming films include the reboot Terminator: Genisys, as well as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

William Shatner HAVEN NEWS
William Shatner is coming to Haven. The sci-fi legend revealed that he would appear on the series, but details surrounding his role were being kept under wraps. Now, thanks to TVLine, we know what Shatner has up his sleeve.

The site reports that Shatner will appear in four episodes of season five. His character is a bit of a mystery, but he's said to have "the potential to forever impact the fate of the town of Haven and its Troubled residents." Shatner's "seminal role" sounds like one to watch.

This character could do a lot of good, or bad, over the course of those four episodes. The Troubles already have their hands full leading up to the midseason finale (on Dec. 5). Some characters are being forced to make unlikely alliances, which could put everyone at odds. Maybe their latest conflict sets the stage for Shatner's arrival?

Aside from Star Trek, Shatner's TV resume includesThe Twilight Zone, T.J. Hooker and Boston Legal.

Haven airs Fridays at 7 p.m. on Syfy.

Reverse Flash THE FLASH - POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT
The official synopsis for The Flash’s upcoming midseason finale has been revealed, and it sounds like we’ll be getting a massive mythology episode — not to mention a potentially huge twist.

Potential spoilers ahead for The CW’s Flash!

One of the central mysteries introduced in the pilot is the identity of the mysterious man in the yellow suit, aka the Flash’s archnemesis Reverse Flash, who was seemingly present at (and responsible for) the murder of Barry’s mother. Well, Barry’s about to meet the baddie head-on.

Many fans have speculated that Reverse-Flash’s secret identity is Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh), Barry’s mentor who was directly responsible for Barry gaining his abilities through the S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator incident. We already know he’s someone connected to the future, and that’s a logical conclusion.

Now here’s the official description for the Tuesday, Dec. 9 midseason finale:

BARRY COMES FACE-TO-FACE WITH THE MAN IN THE YELLOW SUIT/AMANDA PAYS RETURNS TO THE FLASH — Barry (Grant Gustin) finds himself face-to-face with his nemesis, the man in the yellow suit, a.k.a. Reverse Flash, who killed his mother. Barry is frustrated when the Reverse Flash escapes, but Dr. Wells (Tom Cavanagh) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) come up with a plan to trap him. All they need is bait, so they turn to Dr. Tina McGee (guest star Amanda Pays) from Mercury Labs to help. Meanwhile, it’s Christmas at The West household and Iris (Candice Patton) is in full holiday cheer. Eddie (Rick Cosnett) gives her a surprising gift but also leaves her with a question that could change her life. Joe (Jesse L. Martin) joins the search for the man in yellow and ends up in the crossfire. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) finds Ronnie (Robbie Amell). Ralph Hemecker directed the episode written by Todd Helbing & Aaron Helbing (#109).

Hmm. According to this, Dr. Wells is working with Barry to trap Reverse-Flash — and though that could obviously be subterfuge — it definitely sounds like he’s not the yellow-suited speedster. Other fan guesses for Wells’ identity range everywhere from a future-Barry Allen to lesser-known DC character Vandal Salvage. Also of note: As we'd previously heard, we'll also have Ronnie/Firestorm (Robbie Amell) back that week. So, a lot going on.

Mike Vogel CHILDHOOD'S END
Syfy has just filled a pivotal role for the upcoming miniseries Childhood's End. If you're a fan of CBS' Under the Dome, you'll know a thing or two about actor Mike Vogel. Once again, he's being pushed to the forefront of an unusual event.

In Childhood's End, Vogel will take the lead as Ricky Stormgren. He's a midwestern farmer who's given the epic task of bridging human and alien life. He's chosen to act as a representive to an extraterrestrial species that's interested in aiding humanity.

It's a stressful task that will weigh heavily on him. “Ricky struggles with his new-found fame as a blue collar prophet, facing the weight of the entire world looking to him for answers.” It surely doesn't help that the alien Overlords' boss, Karellen, is played by Game of Thrones alum Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister). Talk about intimidating.

Childhood's End will be a six-part miniseries written by Matthew Graham (BBC's Life on Mars). It's based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Arthur C. Clarke. Childhood's End is expected to premiere sometime next year.

STRANGE MAGIC
Following the reveal last week that Touchstone Pictures will release the upcoming project, Lucasfilm (via Yahoo!) has officially debuted the trailer for their upcoming animated film Strange Magic.

Strange Magic is a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and Industrial Light & Magic, which created the CGI animation for 2011's Academy Award-winning film Rango, bring to life the fanciful forest turned upside down.

With a story by George Lucas, Strange Magic is directed by Gary Rydstrom (“Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation,” “Lifted”), produced by Mark S. Miller (associate producer Mars Attacks!) and executive produced by George Lucas, with a screenplay by David Berenbaum (Elf), Irene Mecchi (Brave, The Lion King) and Rydstrom.

The voice cast includes Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, newcomer Meredith Anne Bull, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein and Peter Stormare.

Strange Magic will open in theaters on January 23, 2015.

PROJECT ALMANAC
Paramount has released a brand-new trailer (and poster) for its upcoming found-footage-style time-travel flick Project Almanac.

Dean Israelite’s sci-fi project has been in development for what feels like forever, with a first trailer released way back when in December 2013, when the movie was known as Welcome to Yesterday. The story revolves around a group of teens who build a time machine, and, as always happens, when there's time travel involved, bad stuff ensues.

And here’s the film’s official synopsis:

A brilliant high school student and his friends uncover blueprints for a mysterious device with limitless potential, inadvertently putting lives in danger.

Apparently, the buzz on the movie -- which was screened at Comic-Con -- is really positive, so this may be one film to put on your watch list.

Project Almanac is finally set to hit theaters on Jan. 30, 2015.

Strange-Norell JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL
One of the most acclaimed fantasy novels of the last decade is finally coming to the screen next year.

Susanna Clarke took fantasy literature by storm in 2004 with the publication of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, a sweeping alternate-history novel that examined the lives of two magicians -- often at odds with one another -- living in England during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The novel immediately captivated readers, not just because of its characters and its approach to magic, but also because of its exploration of English history, culture and literary tropes. The book was named the best novel of the year by Time Magazine, and it earned a Hugo Award, a World Fantasy Award and a Locus Award, among others.

Naturally, the novel's success made it ripe for Hollywood adaptation, and New Line Cinema quickly snatched up the rights. Their plans to adapt the book fell through, though, when New Line collapsed and was subsequently folded into Warner Bros. Pictures. Fans of the book waited years for a new glimmer of hope on the film front, and finally got it in 2012 when BBC One opted to adapt the novel into a television series.

Now, that series is finally on the way, and the BBC has released the above first image of Bertie Carvel as Jonathan Strange and Eddie Marsan as Mr. Norrell, along with this plot summary.

"Set at the beginning of the 19th-century, England no longer believes in practical magic. The reclusive Mr Norrell (Marsan) of Hurtfew Abbey stuns the city of York when he causes the statues of York Cathedral to speak and move. With a little persuasion and help from his man of business Childermass (Enzo Cilenti), he goes to London to help the government in the war against Napoleon. It is there Norrell summons a fairy (Marc Warren) to bring Lady Pole (Alice Englert) back from the dead, opening a whole can of worms…"

The seven-part series, written by Peter Harness (Wallander), will arrive on BBC America next year, marking the end of more than a decade of trying to get Clarke's book on screen.

Sherlock SHERLOCK
Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has some bad news for fans of the hit BBC drama, telling them to "expect tragedy" during the forthcoming fourth season.

Speaking to the Radio Times on Thursday, Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes in the show, said, "[y]ou can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that’s just how it goes." Although he refused to reveal whether that meant the death of John Watson's wife Mary as happens in Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories.

The show, which stars man-of-the-moment Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role and The Hobbit's Martin Freeman as Watson, has Freeman's real life partner Amanda Abbington star as Mary Watson. Freeman himself has speculated before that Mary would likely meet her end, telling the Daily Telegraph, “[w]hile we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did... So [John] gets married, and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably she’ll die.”

Gatiss though told the Radio Times that fans shouldn't necessarily assume that is what is going to happen. "Just because it’s in the stories doesn’t mean it’ll happen in the series because there’s an awful lot of changes and an awful lot of places to go and things to do," he said, adding: "[i]t should be clear by now that while, of course, Doyle is our absolute god, we have gone quite a long way away as well – we’ve introduced Sherlock and Mycroft’s parents [for instance], I don’t think they’ve ever been seen in any adaptation – so there are lots of surprises to come.”

A one off special episode of Sherlock begins production in January 2015, to be shown potentially at the end of the year, with a three-episode fourth season to shoot later in 2015 to be shown in 2016.

Robert Redford PETE'S DRAGON
The Walt Disney Studios has confirmed that live-action and CGI film Pete’s Dragon will be filmed in New Zealand from January to April 2015.

Production will be based at Peter Jackson’s Stone Street Studios in the nation’s capital of Wellington.

Pete’s Dragon, to star Robert Redford, Boardwalk Empire actor Oakes Fegley and Matilda’s Oona Laurence, is the first studio feature to use Stone Street since production wrapped on The Hobbit films. Filming will also take place in several locations around New Zealand including the Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Canterbury regions. Its unclear if Weta Digital, another of Jackson’s companies, housed in the same suburb as Stone Street, will be doing the CGI on the film.

Bryce Dallas Howard is in talks to join the cast of the film, which is set against the backdrop of loggers cutting down a forest. Pete is a boy whose parents died in car crash, and who has been subsequently raised by Elliot, the titular dragon, who resides in the threatened forest.

“We were searching for a shooting location that captures the wonder and spirit of Pete’s Dragon,” said producer Jim Whitaker. “The New Zealand aesthetic beautifully matches what the screenplay requires, and we’re grateful to receive such tremendous support from the filmmaking community and industry in this country.”

Gisella Carr, CEO of Film New Zealand, the country’s national film office, said the shoot was secured after two years of negotiation. “We’re delighted to welcome back Disney which has such a long history of production in this country,” she said. “It’s great to see the combination of New Zealand’s favourable screen incentives, locations and skill base have enabled such a high-profile production to come here.”

Production on Pete’s Dragon will coincide with another major Disney shoot in the region: Pirates Of the Caribbean 5 is set to go into production in Australia in February.

The Stand THE STAND
Warner Bros. Pictures’ plans to adapt Stephen King’s massive 1978 novel The Stand into a single film are no more. Instead, attached writer/director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) reveals to Kevin Smith’s Hollywood Babble-On Podcast (via /Film) that he’s now looking at adapting the book into four features.

“I really wanted to do an A-list actor, really grounded, credible version of the movie,” says Boone. “…I sold [Warner Bros.] on a single, three hour movie… So what happened is the script gets finished, I write it in like five months. Everybody loves it. [Stephen] King loves it. $87 million is what it was budgeted at. Really expensive for a horror drama that doesn’t have set pieces… They came back and said ‘Would you do it as multiple films?’ and I said ‘F–k yes!’…So I think we are going to do like four movies.”

Previously adapted as a television miniseries in 1994, The Stand tells the story of a full-scale apocalypse, driven by the accidental release of a biological weapon and the ensuing struggle of good versus evil carried out by the world’s final survivors.

“I loved my script,” Boone continues, “but I was willing to drop it in an instant because you’re able to do an even truer version this way… I can’t tell you anything about how we’re going to do them or what’s going to be in which movie. I’ll just say we are going to do four movies, and we’re going to do ‘The Stand’ at the highest level you can do it at with a cast that’s going to blow people’s minds. We’ve already been talking to lots of people, and have people on board in certain roles that people don’t know about. We’re looking to go into production next year, maybe in the spring.”

Previous reports suggested that Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey was being sought to play the story’s villain, the demonic figure Randall Flagg. Apropos of nothing, King’s book itself makes a brief-but-memorable cameo in the star’s latest, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.

Smith-Dormer PATIENT ZERO
Since ending his run on “Doctor Who” last year, Matt Smith has been spending quite a lot of time with the undead. He’s playing Mr. Collins in director Burr Steers’ upcoming twisted Jane Austen adaptation, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and now, according to a story at Deadline, he’s preparing to battle the living dead once again. This time, Smith will star opposite Natalie Dormer in Screen Gem’s upcoming zombie thriller Patient Zero.

Scripted by Mike Le and set to be directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky (who helmed the Academy Award-winning The Counterfeiters), Patient Zero takes place in a post-outbreak zombie apocalypse and follows the adventures of one man who has the unique ability to speak with the undead and who hopes to use his gift to discover a cure for the plague and his infected wife.

Even outside these two zombie projects, Smith has not strayed far from genre tales. He’s headlining Ryan Gosling’s dark fantasy feature Lost River opposite Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan and Christina Hendricks and will appear opposite Dormer’s “Game of Thrones” co-star Emilia Clarke in the upcoming franchise reboot Terminator Genisys (hitting theaters July 1, 2015).

Dormer, meanwhile, is in theaters today as part of the ensemble cast of Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.

Vincent Newman is attached to produce Patient Zero for Screen Grems through his Vincent Newman Entertainment.

Brad Pitt ALPHA
Although Steven Spielberg’s long-gestating adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s science fiction bestseller Robopocalypse appears to be in a holding pattern for the time being, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Wilson himself is now charting a different course to the big screen. He’s providing the screenplay (as well as the original idea) for a sci-fi survivalist thriller called Alpha.

Details on Alpha are currently few, although the story is being likened to a futuristic Jack London tale. It has also garnered the attention of Brad Pitt and his Plan B Productions. They’ve snagged the rights and have set newcomer Anthony Scott Burns to make his feature film debut. According to the outlet, Burns won the job after he was tasked with creating a short commercial for a fictional company within the film.

Burns, a Toronto-based filmmaker and musician, has posted a number of samples of his work on his Vimeo page, including his impressive short fan trailer for the unfortunately-not-real TRON: Destiny.

There’s no word yet on whether or not he might star in some capacity, but Pitt will produce Alpha alongside Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. The actor, who is currently in theaters headlining David Ayer’s Fury, will next re-team with wife and Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star, Angelina Jolie, for By the Sea. Jolie is both co-starring and directing from her own original screenplay.

Pratt-Viking COWBOY NINJA VIKING
Sci-fi superstar Chris Pratt has been lassoed by Universal Studios to headline their big-screen adaptation of the quirky Image comic Cowboy Ninja Viking. Created by writer A.J. Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo, the story centers around Duncan, a notorious government assassin suffering from multiple personality disorder who is blessed with the mad skills of ... yes, you guessed it ... a cowboy, a ninja and a Viking. The screenplay was obtained in turnaround by Universal from Disney, where it had been languishing for years with an initial script written by Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. The unusual origin story revolves around a secret agency that develops unique operatives called Triplets, named for their three distinct personality manifestations.

One of their main agents goes rogue and attempts to track down the billionaire genius who masterminded the counterintelligence program that created these unstable hybrid hitmen. Sounds like this material is perfect for the mercurial talents of Pratt, who is busy finishing his run on Parks and Recreation and will be seen in next year's Jurassic World as well as Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in 2017. Let's just hope this latest graphic novel adaptation is more Men in Black and less R.I.P.D.

Harley Quinn GOTHAM
We’d already heard rumblings that the Graysons could be popping by on Fox’s Gotham, and it sounds like we’ll also be getting a look at young Harley Quinn down the line as well.

Showrunner Bruno Heller chatted with Entertainment Weekly about the Batman prequel series and which other elements of the Dark Knight’s universe will be introduced this season and beyond. Heller confirmed that the parents of Dick Grayson, aka Robin, will be introduced later this season.

The episode will apparently tell the story of how Dick’s parents, typically portrayed as trapeze artists the Flying Graysons in DC lore, meet and become a couple:

“We’re going to do a prenatal origin story for Robin down the line. There are no MRIs involved. There’s an episode coming up where we learn how Robin’s parents got together.”

Looking beyond year one, Heller said they’re already cooking up plans to introduce the Joker’s sidekick Harley Quinn in future seasons. Just not this season. The series has yet to be renewed, but it’s one of the few hits of the fall, so it’s likely Fox will bring it back for a sophomore effort.

Heller said they’re trying to balance the introduction of all these iconic characters while also keeping the procedural tone of the series rolling. That’s why characters such as the Joker (who we already heard was on the way) and Harley Quinn might filter into season two or beyond:

“One of the things about the size and scope and ambitious of this production is that—it’s not that there’s lots of chefs in the kitchen, but there’s a lot of people with opinions and views and inside knowledge. That aspect of the show—which characters to use and when — is a source of constant discussion. And that may well have been an issue that came up and was dropped. We haven’t got Harley Quinn in it. Riddler’s girlfriend is coming up. And Harley Quinn is definitely planned for later on, but so far no.

You can’t just keep pumping these characters into the show in a comic book sort of way, because you get the Super Friends effect—which isn’t a bad effect, but then you have spaceships and need to go underwater and get wacky villains and the rest of it. You have to work as a character piece first. First it has to be real … We front-loaded [the show with iconic characters], which we had to do, both for story purposes and marketing purposes. We had to let people know it’s not just a hum-drum police procedural, it’s about these larger than life characters.”

Gotham remains an intriguing mess of a show, bouncing between high drama, camp and a Burton-esque tone that is sometimes great while also being infuriatingly silly. It’s getting a little crazy how much all these characters interact in the prequel before the Batman era, but it’s still undeniably fun to see it all thrown together.

Kree-SHIELD AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. - SPOILER WARNING
We’ve gotten some pretty massive hints this season, but the cat is finally out of the bag in regard to the mysterious blue alien that has become a central mystery in ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Obviously, spoilers ahead for the current season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

As most fans had intuited by this point, the blue alien that was being experimented on by S.H.I.E.L.D. to create the serum that brought Coulson and Skye back to life is a Kree. Last night’s episode dropped some hints by talking about the “blue angels from the heavens” who brought the mysterious alien artifact the Obelisk to our planet years ago.

Producer Jeffrey Bell confirmed the Kree connection to TV Guide, but noted the audience will know a whole lot more than Coulson’s team for the immediate future. As Marvel fans are fully aware, the key baddie in Guardians of the Galaxy — Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser — was a Kree, and we know there’s a whole planet of those blue guys kicking around out there in the galaxy. All the folks back on Earth? Yeah, they’re still in the dark.

Another mystery took a major step forward last night when the S.H.I.E.L.D. team seemed to find the lost city connected to the Obelisk — and it looks like it's right here on Earth. We’re delving into speculative territory here, but many fans seem to think Marvel is laying groundwork for the upcoming Inhumans film by making this mysterious city the Inhumans’ home of Attilan. If they’re going to anchor a spinoff in 2018, it’d make sense to get ‘em rolling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now.

In Marvel comic lore, the Inhumans are the descendants of humans experimented on by the Kree, who were also injected with celestial DNA. That’d explain a whole lot of the 0-8-4 questions, and also (potentially) explain some of Skye’s (Chloe Bennet) bizarro family tree. Not to mention why there was a Kree body here on Earth. Bell wouldn’t go so far as to confirm all that, but he did talk about where the Kree arc is going next:

“Our people don't know anything about the Kree or that there's a planet full of them. What they do know is that the strange carvings created by Coulson after he was injected with the Kree serum are actually the map of a city, and they need to find that city before Hydra does. But where is it? Here or on another planet?”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesday nights on ABC, and despite largely mediocre ratings, is actually quite watchable this season.

Fanzines FANZINES RESTORATION
There are worthy causes, and then there’s the latest restoration project taken on by the coolest geeks ever at the University of Iowa.

The University of Iowa Libraries is working with the UI Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development to digitize more than 10,000 science fiction fan zines dating back to the 1930s. The pieces are from the James L. “Rusty” Hevelin Collection.

The collection includes everything from the Futurian War Digest to The Science Fiction Fan and The Phantagraph — all representing decades upon decades of classic sci-fi lore. Evelyn has apparently been collecting since he started picking up pulp mags in the 1930s, and attended many of the first science fiction conventions. Havelin passed away in 2011, and the university acquired the collection in 2012.

For all you young’uns, a quick primer: A “zine” is typically defined as an amateur magazine about a topic. In this case, science fiction. This digitization process is an astounding undertaking and will make these insanely rare works available for the masses.

Anyone interested in the project (and who wouldn’t be?) can keep up on a special Tumblr page established for the undertaking. Go ahead and start clearing out your iPads, folks, we’re gonna have some reading to do.

Greengrass 1984
Paul Greengrass is looking to bring George Orwell's classic dystopian novel 1984 back to the big screen.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the British director is taking charge of the Sony Pictures project, with Scott Rudin on board to produce with Gina Rosenblum. James Graham, who wrote the book for the Finding Neverland musical, will take on writing duties. With the project still in its early stages, no actors have yet been cast. Deadline first reported the news.

Orwell's tale tells of a world where due to a perpetual war, state surveillance is omnipresent. The novel coined the term Big Brother and the themes are an eery reflection of the modern day controversy of drones, CCTV, phone hacking and government infringement of privacy laws.

Michael Radford brought the novel to the screen, appropriately enough in 1984, and the film starred John Hurt as Winston Smith.

Greengrass worked with Rudin on the critically acclaimed Captain Philips and will also work together on the Martin Luther King movie Memphis. The two are also circling Agent Storm, the story of a CIA double agent for Sony.

Greengrass will also be keeping himself busy with another installment, his third, of the phenomenally successful Bourne franchise with Matt Damon primed to return.

Greengrass HIGHLANDER REBOOT
Last month, Summit Entertainment set first-time director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan on their long-gestating reboot of the Highlander franchise. Today, TheWrap brings word that Summit is keen on convincing Tom Cruise to play a role similar to the immortal Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, played in the 1986 original by the equally-immortal Sean Connery.

The original Highlander also stars Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman who, after centuries of dueling to survive against others like him, is forced to confront one final foe: a murderously brutal barbarian who lusts for the prize that comes with being the last immortal.

Although there’s no confirmation as to whether or not Cruise might have any inclination to join Highlander, knowing that he’s a top choice gives us some idea of the direction Nicolas-Troyan is heading with his remake.

Cruise, who starred earlier this year in Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow, has a number of sequels on the way. First, he’ll be back as Ethan Hunt in the Christopher McQuarrie-helmed Mission: Impossible 5, hitting theaters December 25, 2015. He’ll then return as Jack Reacher for a big screen sequel to his 2012 action thriller (this one will be based on Lee Child’s most recent Reacher novel, “Never Go Back”) with plans to also reprise his role as Maverick in a followup to the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun.

But, when Ella's father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella's hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Doctor Who DOCTOR WHO
Steven Moffat revealed he was feeling the pressure when he took over Doctor Who. In fact, the showrunner feared “crashing” the series. But one thing he hasn't feared: Peter Capaldi's work operating the TARDIS.

At a panel to promote the Doctor Who season eight home video release, Moffat responded to a question from host Frank Skinner about damaging the long-running series after taking over for previous showrunner Russell T Davies back in 2010.

Here’s what Moffat said:

“Yes of course you do. Any time you make a big shift in it or a big change in it, which we did this year, then you’re properly worried – it’s like you’re curator of the crown jewels or something.”

Moffat then explained how he actually manages to put all those pesky concerns and worries aside:

“You have to shut that off in your mind. You’ve got to treat it like you own it – even though you don’t.

“You have to sort of be bold with it, you have to sort of behave as if you were allowed to do this. If all you were ever doing is tending to the upkeep of the monument, then it’s not gonna be a proper TV show.”

Even though Moffat was a bit worried about making changes to Doctor Who, the showrunner was pretty sure about one thing: Peter Capaldi in the bigger-on-the-inside shoes of the Doctor.

Last week, at a Royal Television Society event, Steven Moffat praised Peter Capaldi -- who, just yesterday, was confirmed to return as the Twelfth Doctor for season nine and revealed he turned down the opportunity to audition for the Eighth Doctor -- for saving Doctor Who with his darker portrayal of the beloved Time Lord, saying:

“A show dies when it’s reliable like a pair of old slippers. If any reviewer says that about a show that show is gone within a year.”

“Shows die when people say: ‘Oh, it’s quite good. I quite like it.’ And the ‘new show’ is old now, so this had to be a reinvention.”

Here's what he specifically said about Capaldi’s colder, darker Doctor:

“This has been different and designed to make you go: ‘I don’t trust him yet, I don’t know what he’s like - what’s he going to do next?’ It’s exciting and makes the show new again.”

“If people say: ‘I’m appalled by the new Doctor!’ I say: ‘Yeah, yeah, and you’re watching it every week.’”

ASCENSION
We’re just a few weeks away from the debut of Syfy’s new space opera Ascension, and the network has dropped some new footage from the miniseries digging into the Mad Men-meets-Battlestar Galactica project.

The six-episode series (developed by Syfy, which is also Blastr’s parent company) picks up 50 years into a secret space mission launched in 1963 by the U.S. government to populate a new world. But, to make things a bit more complicated, a mysterious murder causes the ship’s crew to question the true nature of their mission as they approach the point of no return.

Considering the extremely unique concept, it’s no surprise that a boatload of thought went into the details of the world aboard the Ascension. Imagine if U.S. culture were frozen in time in the early 1960s, then split off on its own tangent for half a century. Aboard a spaceship. Yeah, we’re curious to see how they pull this off.

THE FLASH
The CW’s new Flash series has become one of the biggest hits of the season, and producer Greg Berlanti promises they’ve only just begun digging into the DC canon.

The Arrow spinoff series has been loaded with comic easter eggs ever since the pilot, and Berlanti said they plan on paying off at least one of those tidbits soon. As most keen-eyed viewers noticed, the destroyed S.T.A.R. Labs included an empty cage with a “Grodd” nameplate — then the final scene of last week’s episode dropped a major monkey tidbit.

In regards to Grodd, Berlanti told TV Line it’s a storyline they plan to introduce even deeper into the mythology by the end of the first season:

“I wouldn’t say teased. I would say we’re going to deal with it this year. The comparison I make is a little bit to Slade the first year on Arrow in the sense of we started with the mask in the pilot and then we saw which way we were going. He was, ultimately, in the back half of that first season even more than we would ever do with Grodd this first year because… We’re going to have to get the technology right and all the stuff right to make it look and feel real. But a lot of times, we do this stuff not as a tease as much as a challenge to ourselves of, ‘Can we do it?’ Grodd’s definitely one of those, so we hope we pull it off.”

Another storyline central to The Flash is the concept of time travel, and Berlanti said they’ll actually be dealing with that in an upcoming episode by midway through the first season. Considering that all the hints that have already been dropped up to this point, we can’t wait to see how they handle it:

“That is the one that we deal with directly in the winter. We, obviously, hint at it from the pilot episode. That is a big — ‘theme’ is the wrong word for it — but that is a big part of the DNA of who The Flash was, so we do deal with that.”

We’re gearing up for the first big crossover with Arrow on Dec. 2-3, but Berlanti revealed they’re already cooking up plans for another crossover event that would likely fall late in the current seasons of both shows:

“We just started talking about that. It’s so much fun to do. They’re so hard to do. But I think they’ll be so rewarding for everybody, ultimately, that that’s our hope, for sure.”

The Flash airs Tuesday nights on The CW.

Jurassic World JURASSIC WORLD
Jurassic World is just seven months away from release, and yesterday saw the arrival of a boatload of images, two websites -- and a countdown.

First, the images: They come from a viral site called Masrani Global, which purports to be the official site of the construction company tasked with building the new Jurassic World theme park. The site contains this reference to that fact in this excerpt from the park's history (via Slashfilm):

Soon after the acquisition of InGen in 1998, Simon Masrani looked to work at a plan that seemed impossible given the circumstances of the years preceeding -- the control and re-invention of a new theme park on Isla Nublar. Experts from the Masrani company were collected together, along with Dr. Henry Wu from the InGen company, to plan for the greatest theme park and attractions ever constructed in humankind’s history.

Some of the images feature actors B.D. Wong (returning from the original Jurassic Park) and Irrfan Khan, as well as a batch of other tantalizing photos from the InGen/Masrani labs and the reconstructed park site at Isla Nublar.

Meanwhile, Comic Book Movie has unearthed two shots of what appears to be the LEGO version of the movie's new dinosaur, created by geneticists and labeled the "D-Rex." The thing looks scary enough as a toy -- it should be pretty terrifying in the movie.

Finally, the film's official website has opened for business and features on its homepage a clock counting down to 9:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, Nov. 27 (Thanksgiving). There's a football game that night on NBC -- which is part of the same corporation as Jurassic World's studio, Universal Pictures (and, it should be noted, Blastr) -- so it's not too great a leap of speculation to deduce that the movie's first trailer might hit NBC at that time.

Check out all the images below and keep an eye on those sites. Jurassic World, directed by Colin Trevorrow and starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Judy Greer, Vincent D'Onofrio, B.D. Wong, Irrfan Khan and Ty Simpkins, opens in theaters June 12, 2015.

Nameless NAMELESS
Grant Morrison is an absolute legend in the comic world from his work on Batman, and now he’s looking toward his next frontier —full-on horror. Get ready for Nameless.

Morrison and artist Chris Burnham are teaming up for the six-issue miniseries, and it sounds like they’re aiming for absolute terror. When reading the Image Comics series, Burnham said the goal is “you’ll feel it creeping up from your guts even as it’s stabbing you in the eyes.” Yeah, that sounds about as dark as possible.

Coming February 2015, here’s how Morrison described the project, in his uniquely snarky way, to Entertainment Weekly:

Nameless is my first collaboration with Chris Burnham since we wrapped up our run on Batman and it’s our first no-holds barred horror comic—a disturbing anti-human voyage to the hopeless outer limits of cosmic nihilism and cruelty, in the company of six doomed astronauts on a mission to save our planet from an approaching asteroid. Needless to say, they get far more than they bargained for.

In my superhero comics, I’ve tended to be a cheerleader for the human spirit, but Nameless gives me a rare opportunity to articulate a long-withheld sneering contempt for our miserable species, with its self-serving, sentimental, suicidal self-delusions and its greedy, willful ignorance.

Inspired by the dark side occultism of the Tunnels of Set, by pessimist philosophers like Thomas Ligotti and Ray Brassier, and by our culture’s unstoppable, almost erotic, obsession with its own destruction, Nameless is a light-hearted romp through the sunlit meadows of a baby unicorn’s daydreams!

Not.

Taboo TABOO
Tom Hardy is headed to FX for a new eight-episode series, “Taboo.” The drama hails from Hardy, producer Ridley Scott and Academy Award-nominated writer Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Locke). Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, Presidents of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions made the announcement today that Scott Free Films and Hardy Son & Baker will commence production in mid-to-late 2015 in the U.K., with the series tentatively slated to debut in mid-2016.

Set in 1813, “Taboo” is based on an original story by Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy. Hardy plays the lead role of “James Keziah Delaney,” a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a very dangerous game.

“Taboo” was created by Knight, who most recently wrote and directed the feature film Locke, starring Hardy. Scott and Hardy will both serve as executive producers on “Taboo”.

“We are privileged to have landed ‘Taboo’ and to work with this exceptional team led by Ridley, Tom and Steven,” said Schrier. “Tom’s passion for this project, from conceiving the original idea with his father to portraying James Delaney, promises to infuse this epic story with great personal passion and credibility.”

Scott said, “FX is the perfect partner to engage with this dark, fantastic world that Tom and Steven have created. We¹re glad to have them on board.”

“’Taboo’ is the first major production our company, Hardy Son & Baker, is setting sail on, and it gives me great pleasure to know that we are in partnership with FX and the BBC,” says Hardy. “I believe with the high standard of creative talent – with Steve Knight and Ridley Scott at the helm – and with the support and backing of these two great broadcasters, we have found the perfect home and team for ‘Taboo.’”

“Taboo” will be produced by Scott Free London and Hardy Son & Baker for BBC One and FX Productions/FX Networks, and distributed internationally by Sonar Entertainment. Executive producers are Ridley Scott and Kate Crowe for Scott Free; Tom Hardy and Dean Baker for Hardy Son & Baker; Steven Knight; and Gene Stein for Sonar. “Taboo” is being produced for BBC One in the U.K., with Sonar Entertainment distributing internationally.

Hopkins-Harris HBO'S WESTWORLD
It's official: HBO is moving forward with its Westworld adaptation.

The drama, based on Michael Crichton's 1973 film and written by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, stars Anthony Hopkins in his first series-regular role as an inventor who runs an adult amusement park populated by lifelike robots. HBO made the announcement Monday via Twitter, with the series coming in 2015.

The drama hails from J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk's Warner Bros. Television-based Bad Robot Productions, with the duo exec producing alongside Jerry Weintraub, Nolan (who directed the pilot) and Joy. Kathy Lingg will co-EP and Athena Wickham is a producer on the drama. Susie Ekins is set as a co-producer. Westworld hails from Bad Robot, Jerry Weintraub Productions and Kilter Films. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the show's androids — played by castmembers including James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton — can be killed off and return with completely different personas, allowing actors to play many characters. That creative device, one top talent agent said, helped HBO attract a premier cast (which also includes Ed Harris, Miranda Otto and Jeffrey Wright). And unlike the actors on such anthology series as FX's American Horror Story and HBO's own True Detective, which reboot themselves every season, the cast of Westworld is signing multiyear deals.

"This is built as a series and, in terms of storytelling, I think the rules are definitely being broken," HBO programming president Michael Lombardo told THR in August of the sci-fi Western from executive producers J.J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub and Bryan Burk. "The promise of the show, in terms of where it's going, is exciting to actors, and they want to be a part of this."

Westworld becomes HBO's second drama from Warner Bros. Television, joining Damon Lindelof's adaptation ofThe Leftovers (which has already been renewed). The cabler recently passed over Ryan Murphy's sexuality drama pilot Open, from 20th Century Fox Television. Westworld is HBO's first project with Bad Robot, which also produces CBS' Person of Interest and Hulu's upcoming event series 11/22/63. The banner recently saw the demise of Revolution, Almost Human and Believe. Abrams' credits include Fringe, Alcatraz and Lost. He's currently prepping Star Wars: Episode VII as well as the next installments in the Mission: Impossible and Star Trek franchises. Abrams' Bad Robot is also prepping a miniseries based on Rod Serling's (The Twilight Zone) final and unproduced screenplay, The Stops Along the Way. A network is not yet attached.

For HBO, Westworld comes as the network recently said farewell to True Blood, and is wrapping the final seasons of Emmy darling Boardwalk Empire and Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom. Westworld joins an HBO drama roster that also includes Game of Thrones, The Leftovers, True Detective and Utopia.

Peter Capaldi DOCTOR WHO NEWS
Well, this one was a bit of a timey-wimey no-brainer, BUT STILL.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has confirmed that the Twelfth Doctor would be back for Season 9.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after an event in London to mark the DVD release of the BBC series’ eight season, Moffat did, indeed, confirm that Peter Capaldi would be returning for Season 9.

Moffat said that “Yes, he’s confirmed.” As for Jenna Coleman, who plays our beloved Time Lord’s companion Clara Oswald, Moffat later said that she had not been confirmed. Could this support rumors that she’s leaving after the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special?

During a Q&A, Peter Capaldi also revealed that he was initially approached to audition for the part of the eighth Doctor for the 1996 Doctor Who movie (the role that ultimately went to Paul McGann), saying:

“But I turned down the opportunity. I loved it so much that I didn’t want to have the disappointment of going for something that I would never get.”

Star Wars 7 STAR WARS NEWS
Now that J.J. Abrams has finished shooting Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there are rumblings that he might show us -- soon -- a little bit of what he shot.

Badass Digest has been picking up intel that we might see the first teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens very soon. How soon? Well, a few different scenarios have been rumored, ranging from placing it in front of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 when that film opens later this week to premiering it on Disney-owned ABC (Mockingjay is less likely due to the short turnaround).

As for what we'll see in that trailer, it won't be all that much -- the thing will supposedly only run for about a minute -- but it will be something. Here's what Badass was told:

It's going to have The Force Theme played on woodwinds, softly, over flashing images of the main leads, each fading to black. There's no dialogue, just reveals of the characters. And then the music swells up into a full orchestral piece -- perhaps what John Williams recorded this weekend? -- and we hear a female voice, likely Daisy Ridley's, saying "Wake up."

And then the title card appears -- Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- and we see the Millennium Falcon, firing blasters, coming right at the camera.

I have to say it sounds compelling -- just reading about that last shot of the Falcon raises a few goosebumps -- and we'll learn soon if that description proves true. Expect to see this somewhere before the end of the year...which is only six and a half weeks away.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out in theaters December 18. 2015.

Sean Bean THE FRANKENSTEIN CHRONICLES
The UK's ITV today confirmed it has ordered "The Frankenstein Chronicles," a thrilling and terrifying re-imagining of the Frankenstein myth as a six-part period crime drama to be produced by Rainmark Films.

Incorporating elements from the investigative and horror genres with an extraordinary hero at its centre, Inspector John Marlott, played by multi-awarding winning leading actor Sean Bean ("Game of Thrones," The Lord of the Rings) will be taken on a terrifying journey in pursuit of a chilling and diabolical foe.

Set in Regency London in 1827, "The Frankenstein Chronicles" has been created by Emmy-nominated director and writer Benjamin Ross ("The Young Poisoner's Handbook," "Torte Bluma" - both as director) and writer Barry Langford ("Torte Bluma").

In the drama's opening sequences, the Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel, following a successful operation by Thames River Police to apprehend a gang of opium smugglers, recruits Marlott.

As he stands on the water's edge contemplating the arrest of the smugglers, Marlott makes a shocking discovery. The body of a dead child is washed up on the shore and on further examination of the corpse he is horrified to discover it's not actually a child but rather a crude assembly of body parts arranged in a grotesque parody of a human form. The mutilated child-like body leaves an indelible impression on Marlott and he finds himself unable to shake off the memory of what has happened that fateful night.

With a formidable reputation as an investigator, he is known as a man who "doesn't know the meaning of fear," so it comes as no surprise when coldly efficient Peel, summons him insisting the "details of your investigation must remain confidential." And after what he's witnessed Marlott accepts the challenge to track the perpetrator of this heinous crime.

We follow him as he pursues the crazed killer behind the mutilated body. As he investigates, Marlott discovers that what he's dealing with is more horrific than he could possibly have imagined.

ITV's Director of Drama, Steve November and Controller of Drama Victoria Fea have commissioned the series for ITV Encore.

"The Frankenstein Chronicles is an epic re-working of one of literature and cinema's most iconic stories," says November. "We're delighted to be working with Benjamin Ross, Barry Langford and the team at Rainmark Films with the vision to bring Mary Shelley's Frankenstein back to life."

"The Frankenstein Chronicles" will be produced by David Tanner for Rainmark Films and Carol Moorhead. Executive Producers are Rainmark Films' Tracey Scoffield and Frank Doelger. The drama's co-creator Benjamin Ross will direct the series.

"Marlott's investigation takes him into the dark corners of Regency London," said Benjamin. "He discovers an underworld of prostitution, drug smuggling, bodysnatching, and murder for profit. The rational evidence points first one-way and then another as he contemplates a frightening alternate scenario," added Benjamin.

Filming will begin in Northern Ireland with funding from Northern Ireland Screen in January 2015 and further information with regard to casting will be announced soon.

MARCO POLO
Netflix has released the new trailer for their upcoming original series "Marco Polo," which will premiere on the streaming service on December 12 in all territories where Netflix is available.

In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, "Marco Polo" is based on the famed explorer's adventures in Kublai Khan's court in 13th century China. The show stars Italian newcomer Lorenzo Richelmy as Marco. Best known for her role in The Wachowskis' Cloud Atlas, the Beijing-born Zhu Zhu plays Marco’s love interest Kokachin. Rounding out "Marco Polo's" cast of characters will be Remy Hii as Prince Jingim, Olivia Cheng as Mei Lin, Claudia Kim as Khutulun, Uli Latukefu as Byamba, Chin Han as Jia Sidao, and Tom Wu as Hundred Eyes. Patrick MacManus serves as co-executive producer. Collin Creighton produced on behalf of The Weinstein Company.

CINDERELLA
Walt Disney Pictures has released a trailer preview for their upcoming reboot Cinderella, ahead of the full-length trailer's debut on Wednesday, November 19 on ABC's Good Morning America.

The studio released a trailer back in May, but it didn't include any footage from director Kenneth Branagh's fairy tale drama. Although it's only 15 seconds, we do get to see Game of Thrones star Richard Madden as the charming Kit. Lily James stars as Ella, who is spitefully renamed Cinderella by her stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera). Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother's dying words and to "have courage and be kind."

She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella's hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and -- armed with a pumpkin and a few mice -- changes Cinderella's life forever.

Cinderella comes to theaters March 13th, 2015 and stars Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, Hayley Atwell, Stellan Skarsgård, Richard Madden, Lily James, Holliday Grainger, Derek Jacobi. The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Marvel Licensing TOP MARVEL HERO
You don’t have to look past the box-office returns the past few years to realize it's a superhero world — we just live in it. But which hero stands head and shoulders (and stilts) above the rest when it comes to licensing?

Though Marvel’s Avengers and Iron Man have ruled the cineplex the past few years — with Superman and Batman poised to steal some thunder soon — it’s a different character who is pulling in beyond the billion-dollar mark these days. The mythical hero who is practically printing money these days: Marvel's Spider-Man.

Despite the fact that Sony can’t seem to turn the wall-crawler into a bona fide hit franchise on the big screen, he’s still raking in a ton of cash on the licensing side and remains the most popular hero on the planet. According to The Hollywood Reporter, License Global placed Marvel owner Disney first among licensors with sales of about $41 billion in 2013; DC owner Warner Bros. was seventh with $6 billion.

A big ol’ chunk of that Marvel and Disney money is covered by Spider-Man, who brings in global retail sales of an astounding $1.3 billion. For the sake of comparison: The Avengers did $325 million in 2013, DC's Batman did $494 million, and Superman did $277 million. Wow. Go Spidey.

With a huge push into its unified universe with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC hopes to make up some of that gap over the next few years. But they have a long way to go if they want to catch Spider-Man alone — much less Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as a whole.

HOLLYWOOD'S MONSTERS
A new writing team is assembling at Universal to resurrect classic monsters and apparently create a credible universe to compete for years with the slates of Marvel and DC Comics films. Recently, Noah Hawley (TV's Fargo), Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) and Ed Solomon (Now You See Me) were added to work on this new cinematic universe, as The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Nov. 12.

So, perhaps in a few years time, moviegoers will see an Avengers-style film with Frankenstein, Wolf Man, Invisible Man and the Creature From the Black Lagoon clamoring around to join forces and wreak havoc. For now, with the slate uncertain, one can only guess what ideas are being bandied about in pitch meetings.

The prospect of a monster mash-up title at least offers modern audiences the potential for some new perspective on characters they've been familiar with for decades. In 1931, when Universal's Frankenstein hit the big screen, it was a less certain prospect.

THR's critic praised the horror title but wondered if it would catch on with audiences. The review flatly asked, "Is it entertainment?" and stated that it could be "the greatest shocker of all time — or a dud."

With the debut of Wolf Man a decade later, on Dec. 10, 1941, only days after the U.S. declared war after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the trade paper's headline noted that it was a "HORRIFIC TALE - POSSIBLY TOO MUCH SO FOR PRESENT DAY."

Below are excerpts from THR's reviews of the theatrical debuts of several Universal monster titles, with original headlines from the stories. There's shock over now familiar plot points and even a 1954 complaint about unnecessary "eyestrain" caused by 3D glasses meant to amplify underwater scenes in the Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Frankenstein FRANKENSTEIN 100% SHOCKER - OLD HORROR TALE FULL Of THRILLS
Nov. 3, 1931 - You'll never tell anything about this one from a preview. A preview can only determine the continuity, the photography, the sound — the acting and the direction. All of these Frankenstein has — in perfection. It is the story itself, its effect on a paying audience, the word-of-mouth that will go out that will determine whether or not Universal has the greatest shocker of all time — or a dud. It can be one or the other; there will be no in-between measures.

[....] Is it entertainment? Only theatre-goers can give that answer. We venture the opinion that this production of Frankenstein will cause more talk, no matter how that talk points, than any picture that has been made in years. By the same token the production brings to mind these questions. If any or all of them prove correct — Universal has something worth while for the experiment it has made with Frankenstein. Will Frankenstein be another Dracula?

[...] As a story Frankenstein dates back to 1831 — for one hundred years it has remained alive in the interest of those book readers who go in for ghost stories. Now we'll see if these same people go to motion picture theatres.

Invisible Man UNIVERSAL's 'INVISIBLE MAN' Is BIG BET FOR SHOWMEN - PICTURE CREDIT TO DIRECTOR AND STAFF
Oct. 27, 1933 - As we came out of the theatre someone near us said, "Here's the answer to a showman's prayer." And about all we can add to that is the remark that if the showman doesn't know how to use it he had better quite saying his prayers. There's no hope, here or hereafter.

[...] Invisible Man is a legitimate offspring of the family that produced Frankenstein and Dracula. [...] while we are indirectly comparing, we may as well add that it is a picture that will fare far better in the neighborhoods than either of its predecessors, for while it is "horror" it is ... reality "horror comedy."

[...] It's tough on Claude Rains to make his debut in a part in which he isn't seen until the last few feet, and then as a corpse, but perhaps that's all the more reason to compliment him on the sort of acting that DOES put the character over.

Arthur Edeson will be listing his work on this picture in his "blue list" for as long as he remains in cinematographic circles and daring all to go and see "something different." And In closing, an orchid to the dexterous editing by Maurice Pivar and Ted Kent that plays no mean part in the tricking of suspense and eerie atmosphere.

Wolf Man 'WOLF MAN' HORRIFIC TALE - POSSIBLY TOO MUCH SO FOR PRESENT DAY
Dec. 10, 1941 - The Wolf Man serves its horror straight. A very substantial cast undertakes to sell believably a tale of superstitious folklore — the one about the werewolf — and producer-director George Waggner dresses it up with all the craft at the command of a studio practiced in spinning horror yarns. Still it is impossible to guess how the public will accept The Wolf Man in these times.

Curt Siodmak's original screenplay brings Larry Talbot back to join his father in an English ancestral castle that has remained unchanged for 300 years. Beliefs haven't changed much either, and the superstitious people are quite willing to subscribe to the theory that a man bitten by a werewolf turns into a werewolf himself. And that is what happens to Larry. He is bitten, he does turn, and the only thing his father can do about it is to beat him to death with a silver-headed cane, for — mind you — werewolfs can't be killed by anything that is not silver.

[...] Waggner's production is lavish with atmospheric effects, and his direction completely able in blending together many diverse elements. It is the kind of a job that calls for keen perspective to bring off at all.

Black Lagoon 'BLACK LAGOON' DIVERTING SCIENCE-FICTION MELLER
Feb. 9, 1954 - Creature From the Black Lagoon is a good piece of science-fiction of the beauty and the beast school, the beast in this case being a monstrous combination of man and fish. It makes for solid horror-thrill entertainment. [...]

Screenplay by Harry Essex and Arthur Ross, from a story by Maurice Zimm, is soundly developed, leading to an exciting climax. Jack Arnold's megging is briskly competent, although too much time is wasted on underwater shots which are neither novel or dramatic enough to hold interest for the entire footage. Pruning here would help. [...]

The William Alland production was shot in black-and-white 3-D, the process adding some small value to the underwater shots which don't make up for the eyestrain. William E. Snyder's photography is good. Underwater sequences were ably directed by James C. Havens.

Dumber WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels' Dumb and Dumber To laughed its way to an estimated $38.1 million debut at the North American box office, enough to edge out strong holdover Big Hero 6.

Opening 20 years after the original, the surprisingly strong performance of the PG-13 comedy is a needed win for Carrey, as well as another feather in the cap for Daniels, star of HBO's The Newsroom. Red Granite Pictures fully financed the sequel after Warner Bros. put the sequel into turnaround, with Universal handling distribution and marketing duties.

Dumb and Dumber To reunites original directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly with Carrey and Daniels, aka, Lloyd and Harry. The story follows the dim-witted friends as they search for Lloyd's daughter in hopes that she can give him a kidney. Rob Riggle, Laurie Holden, Rachel Melvin and Kathleen Turner also star in the movie, which earned a B- CinemaScore.

Dumb and Dumber To, costing under $40 million to make, may have had the last laugh, but both Disney's Big Hero 6 and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar enjoyed nice holds in their second weekend.

Big Hero 6 fell 36 percent to $36 million from 3,773 locations for a domestic total of $111.7 million and early worldwide haul of $148.4 million. Many rival studios have Dumb and Dumber To ending up much closer to Big Hero 6; the final verdict won't be known until official weekend numbers are released Monday morning.

Placing No. 2 domestically for the weekend, Big Hero 6 has helped propel Disney past the $4 billion mark in global ticket sales for only the second time in its history.

From Paramount and Warner Bros., Interstellar came in No. 3, declining a slim 39 percent to $29.2 million from 3,561 theaters for a domestic total of $97.8 million (all eyes were on the movie to see how much it would fall). Globally, the space epic has zoomed past the $300 million mark to finish Sunday with $321.9 million in ticket sales.

mb and Dumber'?" Dumb and Dumber To — the first studio comedy in the marketplace since late August — played surprisingly young (43 percent of the audience was under the age of 25), as well as to an ethnically diverse audience, with Caucasians (44 percent) and Hispanics (38 percent) dominating. Overall, the pic skewed male (55 percent).

The movie marks Carrey's biggest live-action opening since Bruce Almighty more than a decade ago ($70 million), as well as Daniels' highest ever, not accounting for inflation.

"Dumb and Dumber was a beloved film on home entertainment, and people wanted to be entertained. It's escapism," said Universal distribution chief Nikki Rocco.

Overseas, Dumb and Dumber To debuted in its first four markets, earning $3.2 million, led by Germany with $1.4 million.

After Dumber and Dumber To, this weekend's only other new nationwide offering in the U.S. was Beyond the Lights. The romance drama grossed roughly $6.5 million from 1,789 locations, somewhat less than expected, although it did earn an A CinemaScore.

Beyond the Lights tells the story of a Rihanna-like singer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) on the rise who falls for a cop (Nate Parker) after he saves her from a suicide attempt. The $7 million film is from Relativity, Undisputed Cinema and Homegrown Pictures in association with BET Films.

Written and directed by The Secret Life of Bees helmer Gina Prince-Bythewood, the PG-13 title is the first movie to come out of Relativity's new multicultural division. It also stars Minnie Driver, Richard Colson Baker and Danny Glover.

The specialty box office saw a flurry of new openings as awards season heats up. Sony Pictures Classics' wrestling drama Foxcatcher, from director Bennett Miller and starring Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, fared the best by far, grossing $288,113 from six theaters for a theater average of $48,019, one of the best showings of the year.

Tommy Lee Jones' The Homesman, starring Jones opposite Hilary Swank, opened to $48,033 from four theaters in Los Angeles and New York for a location average of $12,033, a solid showing for a Western-themed film. Roadside Attractions and Saban Films are partners on the film.

Open Road's Rosewater, marking Jon Stewart's directorial debut, struggled in its debut, grossing $1.2 million from 371 runs.

Among holdovers, Fox Searchlight's Birdman cracked the top 10 as it made another major expansion, grossing $2.5 million from only 857 theaters for a cume of $11.6 million.

Philae pics ROSETTA'S PHILAE MISSION
Like a scene straight from Alien's LV-426 planetoid, check out these previously unreleased photos of the bizarre, boulder-strewn surface of Comet 67P/CG where the steadfast little lander, Philae, is now compiling data for the ESA's historic mission. This series of digital images was taken during Rosetta's close-in orbit of the comet six miles above the surface in the period leading up to this week's landmark touchdown. Rosetta's navigation cameras captured these dramatic images of the soaring cliffs, flat plateaus, stark scored valleys, jagged outcrops and pockmarked ridges rising at strange angles from the craggy comet's two lobes.

Philae's mission may be cut short due to the reduced sunlight exposure obtained at its final resting place butted up against the shadow of an icy rock wall, severely limiting its battery life.

The Missing THE MISSING
Starz and BBC One's new series "The Missing" premieres Saturday, Nov. 15, and it is a thrill ride from the very start.

"The Missing" tells the story of Tony Hughes (James Nesbitt) and his desperate eight year search to locate his lost son Oliver, who disappears on a family trip to France. The disappearance proves problematic for Tony and his wife Emily (Frances O'Connor), because only Tony was with Oliver when he vanished. The grieving father is able to find a mainstay in detective Julian Baptiste (Tcheky Karyo) who never loses hope in the case throughout the years.

Ant Man ANT-MAN COMIC
This January, months ahead of his first ever big-screen appearance, Scott Lang will star in an all-new Ant-Man series from writer Nick Spencer (Superior Foes of Spider-Man) and artist Ramon Rosanas (Night of the Living Deadpool). The series will feature the second Ant-Man trying to rise up from the shadow of his past, and the shadow of his Ant-Man predecessor, by traveling to a new city and getting a new lease on life. It's a new start for Ant-Man, and Marvel's concocted an intriguing variant cover concept to go with it.

When Ant-Man #1 hits comic book stores in January, it will feature a limited edition variant cover by Ed McGuiness (shown below) that Marvel has dubbed the "Shrinking Variant." It's called that because, in celebration of Ant-Man's size-changing powers, each individual copy of the Shrinking Variant will feature Ant-Man at a different size. All will be individually numbered, and no two are alike, so if you buy one, you really do have a one-of-a-kind variant cover.

“This is completely unlike any cover we’ve ever attempted,” said Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “We’ve even had to utilize new technologies to make it happen. Each variant is completely unique. Each and every cover will feature a different sized Ant-Man. No two are identical!”

If you're not the kind of comics reader who's interested in variant collecting or variant covers in general, this might not grab you, but if you've lived through years of comics pulling the same tricks with their variant covers (black and white, chromium, sketch covers, etc.), and you're looking for something new, this is pretty neat. Plus, it's just a chance for Marvel to have a little bit more fun and fanfare added to their Ant-Man launch. After all, 2015's a big year for him.

Ant-Man #1 is on sale January 7, and the Shrinking Variant cover will be available in comic shops only.

DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
Remember how dark the ending was to that season finale of Doctor Who? With the death and the lying and the loneliness?

And then...FATHER CHRISTMAS YEAH!

The idea that parents giving kids a great big pile of presents is a more ridiculous notion than Father Christmas is kind of true. Also, Nick Frost as Santa is inspired casting. Also also, Nathan McMullen from Misfits as an elf is also inspired casting. Because he's pretty short.

Now, only a month and a half or seo to wait for the rest.

Daniel Bruhl CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
The cast list is coming together quickly for Marvel’s ambitious Captain America: Civil War, and one more actor has signed on in what could be a villainous role.

Marvel has confirmed Daniel Bruhl (Rush, Inglorious Basterds) has joined the sequel in an unspecified role, though multiple reports claim he will be playing a villain of some sort. There are also reports the role could be recurring and carry into other Marvel films.

Bruhl joins Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) in Civil War, while Joe and Anthony Russo return to direct after knocking it out of the park with Winter Soldier. There are also unconfirmed reports Sebastian Stan will reprise his role as The Winter Soldier in the sequel (which wouldn't be much of a surprise).

So, who is Bruhl playing? We don’t know, and there are already some conflicting reports. Deadline claims the character he’ll be playing is reportedly the villain of the film, though Variety cites sources saying he’ll be a minor villain who’ll carry over as a bigger menace in Doctor Strange. Regardless, it’s at least safe to say he’ll probably be a baddie.

Marvel producer Kevin Feige notes they chose Bruhl because of his ability to “deliver intense, nuanced performances.” Vague? Yes. But, playing a compelling villain would obviously require some intensity and nuance.

Mystery Science Theater MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER
The ultra-low-budget series built a fiercely loyal fan base over the past few decades thanks to a certain brand of pitch-perfect snark and biting nostalgia — and now Mystery Science Theater 3000 could be coming back to the small screen.

Of all places, some “Best Of” episodes could show up on PBS next year as part of a programming offering via Shout! Factory. American Public Television is currently offering four classic MST3K episodes to local public-TV programmers. If these four episodes prove to be popular (and how could they not?), then it’s possible it could lead to even more episodes coming up in the future.

The four episodes on the table include Manos: The Hands of Fate, Hercules and the Captive Women, Gunslinger and The Unearthly. All four of these episodes are legit classics for the long-running series, and we’d definitely tune in if they showed up on local programming packages. Especially Manos. That episode is one of the best.

Though it went through a few different incarnations and networks (KTMA, Comedy Central, SCI FI Channel, etc.) during its decade-long run, the series has largely been regulated to tape-trading, scattershot DVD releases and now a smattering of streaming options in the age of Netflix. Those are all solid options, but c’mon — MST3K belongs on television.

Wildcat ARROW NEWS
Though the Arrow seemed to be the first do-gooder to put on a mask and hit the streets of Starling City, the writers dropped the revelation this week that Ted Grant’s (J.R. Ramirez) Wildcat actually beat him to the punch by a full five years — though his brief tenure as a hero didn’t end well. At all.

In a chat with ComicBook.com, Guggenheim noted their use of the character as a trainer for Laurel (Katie Cassidy) presented the perfect opportunity to follow up with Wildcat a few years after his flirtation with vigilantism. It was a nice twist, and Guggenheim said it was really a “no-brainer” from a story perspective:

“One of the things we wanted to do was to do the character of Wildcat, for a number of reasons. He makes sense within our world, Ted Grant had trained the original Black Canary, we've got Ted Grant training Laurel. There's a lot of low-hanging fruit there as it were, in terms of making Ted and Wildcat part of the show a no-brainer. At the same time, as you might have noticed, we've got a good chunk of costumed heroes running around Starling City. The challenge for us was how to make Ted and the Wildcat character different and the answer for us was revealing that Oliver was not in fact the first vigilante to roam the streets of Starling.”

It's actually been something we've been talking about for quite a while. One of the advantages of both the success of the show and the way our collective brains work is that we're always going, ‘Oh, okay, this is what we're going to do in Season Four, this is what we're going to do in Season Five.’”

Guggenheim went on to discuss how they map out seasons years in advance with plot points, and the long game they try to play by laying out major story arcs 1-2 seasons in advance. It’s an approach that has made Arrow one of the best shows on television, and it’s nice to know they’re still well ahead of the curve:

"We start with the season mapped out but then the closer we get to the end of the season, we've got to plant firmer flags in the sand. The picture that we developed back in June has got to come into greater focus. And we were talking about the next batch of episodes and we couldn't help ourselves; we started talking about Season Four and it was like, ‘No, no, no, we've got to finish Season Three first.’ That's sort of the way the show has been done. We're actually working on an episode now that pays off something that we set up back in Season One, an idea we've always had and were holding in our back pocket for the right time. That, to me, is one of the joys of working on the show is we get to play the long game with a lot of these things, like with the Felicity episode last week, and when we finally get it out into the world, it's always really exciting.”

Chrononauts CHRONONAUTS
The mind behind Kick-Ass is cooking up a brand-new sci-fi comic called Chrononauts, and we have a first look at the “Apollo 13 meets The Time Machine” series right here.

Developed by Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, The Secret Service) and Sean Murphy (The Wake, Punk Rock Jesus) for Image Comics, Chrononauts is described as an escapist time-travel adventure in the vein of Guardians of the Galaxy or Doctor Who. Plus, with some retro sci-fi attitude and cheeky humor thrown in.

The series basically follows two guys from the future who start bouncing around the time stream interacting with all kinds of different historical eras. It makes for a fun pitch, and with Millar pulling the strings and Murphy on art, it could be one heck of a cool ride. Here’s Millar’s take via Entertainment Weekly:

“‘Man’s first step into the past’ was really the starting point for this, planting an American flag in the soil the day before even Columbus arrives. But of course it all goes horribly wrong and so we have these two guys stranded in the time-stream, trying to get home, but at the same time at this incredible advantage the people around them don’t have. It’s essentially a buddy story about two best friends who can jump around between 16th-century Persia, the American Civil War or New York in the ’20s.”

For anyone who has seen some of Murphy’s previous work, the art should look familiar (in a good way). It continues his specific style that made The Wake such a stunningly cool book, and it sounds like he’s having a good time digging into his bag of retro sci-fi tricks to put it together:

“When Mark first sent me the pitch, I remember showing it to my wife. She looked at me and said, ‘Oh my God—this book is so you!’ I rarely get to work on a script with comedy, so this entire project has been a real treat. For the sci-fi designs, I created the suits to be a bit retro—like F1 racing suits from the 1960s. It’s a bit more fun and whimsical, and fits the tone of the characters better. A lot of sci-fi tries to reinvent the wheel; for Chrononauts, I went through the last three decades and picked a mix of the coolest stuff that would also feel familiar. That way the readers can focus more on the story and less on the tech.”

Millar has conceived the project in mini-arcs, and the first four-issue run is set to hit shelves in March 2015. He also has two more Chrononauts arcs in the pipeline once those arrive.

Bond 24 BOND 24
According to The Daily Mail columnist Baz Bamigboye, two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz is set to play the antagonist in Sam Mendes still-untitled Bond 24. There, he joins Daniel Craig, Léa Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Dave Bautista.

The new film, set for release on November 6, 2016, will again be directed by Mendes, helmed Skyfall helmer. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson will produce.

Waltz, who took home Oscars for his performances in both Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, can next be seen in Horrible Bosses 2 before starring Amy Adams in Tim Burton's Big Eyes. He's also set to star opposite Alexander Skarsgard in 2016's Tarzan, arriving from Warner Brothers Pictures and four-time Harry Potter helmer David Yates.

Park Chan-Wook SECOND BORN
Park Chan-Wook, the helmer behind films like Oldboy, Stoker and Sympathy for Mr. Vegeance, has signed on to direct a sci-fi thriller titled Second Born, Variety reports.

Second Born, scripted by David Jagernauth and set up at Rumble Films, takes place in a future where mankind stores human consciousness in microchips, allowing one the ability to exchange their body while retaining their thoughts. Unfortunately, this has led to a black market of body thefts.

Rumble's David Lancaster is set to produce alongside Stephanie Wilcox and Wonjo Jeong. Derby Street will finance with their CEO, Nicola Horlick, executive producing alongside James Gibb and Jon Shiffman.

Frequency FREQUENCY
"I'm still here, chief," is the message being left today by Frequency, the Gregory Hoblit-directed 2000 high-concept time travel thriller that stars Jim Caviezel and Dennis Quaid. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that NBC is developing a television series based on the film and has set "Supernatural" showrunner Jeremy Carver to script.

Originally written by Toby Emmerich, Frequency tells the story of a man (Caviezel) who discovers that his ham radio allows him to communicate with his long-dead father 30 years in the past. Together, the father and son use this power to solve a murder case in two different time periods.

The television version is set up at Warner Bros. Television. Carver and Emmerich will both executive produce alongside Jennifer Gwartz, Dan Lin and John Rickard. As always, check back for updates as they become available.

THE MESSANGERS
The CW has released the first two minutes of its upcoming apocalypse-themed sci-fi series The Messengers. Not only that, but they’ve also released two HQ promo pics of Shantel VanSanten (Beauty and the Beast) as Vera Buckley, and a pretty dirty Diogo Morgado (the dude who played Jesus in The Bible) as “The Man.”

Here's the detailed synopsis for The CW’s upcoming series:

"In the white-hot sun of the New Mexico desert, scientist Vera Buckley watches in fascination as a mysterious object plummets to Earth and explodes in a blinding flash, sending out a shock wave that briefly stops Vera’s heart and panics her techie coworker, Alan Harris.

Vera is not the only one affected by the blast; she is instantly and mysteriously connected to four other strangers, who also collapse only to miraculously come back to life: Erin Calder, a young mother desperate to protect her 7-year-old daughter from an abusive ex-husband; Peter Moore, a troubled high school student who finally lashes out to end the constant bullying he can no longer endure; Raul Garcia, a federal agent looking to escape his undercover assignment in a violent Mexican drug cartel; and Joshua Silburn Jr., a charismatic second-generation televangelist following in his father’s footsteps – all awaken after the pulse with extraordinary gifts they can barely believe, from inexplicable strength to the ability to heal others.

Most mysterious of all is the figure known only as The Man, who offers Vera the one thing she wants most in life – to be reunited with her kidnapped son – if she will help him with one morally complicated task. That task puts Vera on a collision course with nurse Rose Arvale who, after a seemingly random act of violence left her in a coma for seven years, suddenly begins to stir. As Joshua, Jr. prophesied, the wheels of Revelation have begun to turn, and these five newly christened Angels of the Apocalypse may be the only hope for preventing the impending Rapture."

Granted, this is only the first two minutes, and they're not very exciting at that. But ... The CW is obviously trying to carve out a nice little niche of genre TV shows for itself, and we're curious to see where this one will go. Hopefully it'll turn out to be more in the league of Supernatural than Star-Crossed. Hopefully.

Black Canary ARROW
With Laurel Lance training hard to take the place of her now-dead sister Sara as Black Canary, it was only a matter of time before we got our first look at Katie Cassidy fully suited up in her vigilante outfit.

However, we’re told we’ll have to wait until the 10th episode of the current season, titled “Left Behind,” before we get to see Laurel Lance dressed in black leather and mask on the hit superhero TV series.

But have a look at the pics below and let us know if you like the look of Katie Cassidy as Black Canary.

Also starring Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, Emily Bett Rickards, Colton Haynes, Willa Holland, Paul Blackthorne and John Barrowman, Arrow airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

Wolfman WOLFMAN
The so-so Dracula Untold unofficially kicked things off, but Universal’s new shared monster universe begins in earnest with 2016’s The Mummy — and now we know what’s coming after that.

Deadline is reporting that the studio is developing a new Wolf Man film, and they’re going after Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) to put together the script. Hoping to capitalize on Marvel’s model of a shared universe, Universal is putting together an ambitious film slate of connected monster movies featuring classic franchises like The Mummy, Dracula and now Wolf Man.

Aside from the fact that they’re apparently courting writers, we don’t know a whole lot about what shape the film will take. Best guess? Judging by the post-credit scene in Dracula Untold, and the rumored synopsis for The Mummy, it’s possible this film might be set in the present day (as opposed to a horror period piece).

The furry fiend that is the Wolf Man has been kicking around since George Waggner directed the original Wolf Man in 1941, starring Claude Rains and Lon Chaney Jr. That film spawned several sequels through the 1940s. Looking toward more immediate history, Universal released a messy Wolf Man reboot in 2010 starring Benicio del Toro that was mired by absolute anarchy during development that left the final film almost nonsensical.

Word of development on a new Wolf Man also matches up with Universal’s recent decision to stake out a release date on April 21, 2017, for an unannounced film. Certainly could be Wolf Man, or perhaps a different classic monster.

ROBOT OVERLORDS
A new trailer for Robot Overlords, starring sci-fi vets Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson, has been released.

What's it about, you ask?

As the title of the upcoming sci-fi movie suggests, the story is about an invasion of Earth by alien robots (think Transformers meets any other alien invasion flick you’ve ever seen). Then in waltzes a kid, played by relative newcomer Callan McAuliffe (The Great Gatsby, I Am Number Four), who happens to be “the chosen one” or some such.

The main draw of Robot Overlords is the presence of name actors Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files). Anderson will be returning to TV in the U.K. tomorrow in the highly anticipated second series premiere of BBC Two’s The Fall.

DIVERGENT: INSURGENT
The first teaser trailer for the Divergent sequel Insurgent has arrived, and it’s not exactly what we were expecting. But that might be a good thing.

The first installment of the Hunger Games-lite series, which stars Shailene Woodley, did solid box-office business — which was enough for Lionsgate to pull the trigger quickly on this sequel. The first teaser footage is more of a concept than anything, focusing on Tris (Woodley) as she tries to rescue her mother from a fiery, floating house with a major Inception vibe.

As far as plot details are concerned, it’s a bit on the thin side. Obviously, for anyone who has seen the first film, this footage is likely culled from a dreamlike fear test scene in the actual film. But heck, considering how boring the first film was, this 1+ minute bit of footage was actually more exciting than anything they’ve done. So here’s hoping for the best.

Check out the synopsis for the sequel below:

The Divergent Series: Insurgent raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent is set to open March 20, 2015.

Forty Thieves FORTY THIEVES
Having recently helmed the ensemble drama This is Where I Leave You, Shawn Levy has, according to The Wrap signed on to direct a new take on the "1,001 Arabian Nights" story "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves". The film version, titled Forty Thieves, will follow a character named Allen and a few actors have already tested for the role. According to the outlet, those names include Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Evan Peters (X-Men: Days of Future Past and Dan Stevens (The Guest).

Set up at 20th Century Fox, Forty Thieves is likened to Guardians of the Galaxy in its overall tonal blend of comedy and adventure. The screenwriter, however, has not yet been revealed.

Of those three names, only Stevens has worked with Levy before. He plays Sir Lancelot in the upcoming Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, set to hit theaters December 19.

Agent Carter AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
On the heels of the promo for next week's episode, Marvel Entertainment and ABC have released a new tidbit about episode 2.08 with the reveal that Hayley Atwell will be returning to the series as Peggy Carter! You can check out the first image of Atwell in the episode below. Titled “The Things We Bury,” the episode is officially described as follows:

“Coulson and team find themselves in an epic face-off against Hydra to uncover an ancient secret, while Ward kidnaps his brother, Senator Christian Ward, for a violent trip down memory lane.”

Written by DJ Doyle and directed by Milan Cheylov, “The Things We Bury” is set to air November 18. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” airs Tuesdays at 9 P.M. on ABC.

Atwell will of course reprise the role in the upcoming "Agent Carter" TV series set to debut on ABC January 6, 2015.

MAGGIE EGAN-CUMMINGS
Our wonderful ISN Reporter from Babylon 5, Maggie Egan-Cummings, has landed a part on an upcoming Grey's Anatomy. She is being directed by Debbie Allen! There is a chance this will turn into a recurring role for Maggie. Finger's crossed!

GOTHAM
Though it seems he’ll be a good guy at this point in the timeline, Gotham is set to bring in a young Harvey Dent in the prequel series. Young Dent will be played by Nicholas D’Agosto (Final Destination 5) on the series, and it seems he’ll be an up-and-coming assistant district attorney.

Dent, who eventually becomes the villain Two-Face, was famously Gotham’s district attorney before going bad in the comic canon. He was most recently played by Aaron Eckhart on the big screen in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight in 2008. D’Agosto’s version certainly seems to be charismatic, but we are intrigued about the inherent age gap between him and Bruce Wayne. Aren’t they typically a bit closer in age? We digress.

D’Agosto’s character is currently just a loose recurring role, but considering Gotham is likely to get a second season pick-up, we’d think he could definitely be worked into more storylines down the line. A do-gooder assistant district attorney could certainly be a good ally for Det. Jim Gordon. Plus, you know, he will eventually be the city’s district attorney.

This new episode of Gotham, dubbed “Harvey Dent,” airs Monday, November 17 on Fox.

THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE
The first full synopsis for Amazon’s upcoming sci-fi series The Man in the High Castle has been released, ahead of the pilot’s imminent unveiling.

The project bounced around development hell for a few years before finally finding new life at Amazon Studios, and the streaming service has quietly shot a pilot for the series that will soon be released publicly, along with a half dozen others, via Amazon’s cool (albeit unorthodox) pilot season process.

Here’s the first full synopsis for the series, giving us an inkling at how they’ll be adapting the alt-history tale:

Based on Philip K. Dick’s Hugo Award-winning 1962 alternative history, The Man In The High Castle considers the question of what would have happened if the Allied Powers had lost World War II. Some 20 years after that loss, the United States and much of the world has now been split between Japan and Germany, the major hegemonic states. But the tension between these two powers is mounting, and this stress is playing out in the western U.S. Through a collection of characters in various states of posing (spies, sellers of falsified goods, others with secret identities), The Man in the High Castle provides an intriguing tale about life and history as it relates to authentic and manufactured reality.

The hour-long drama pilot stars Alexa Davalos (Mob City) as Juliana Crain, Luke Kleintank (Pretty Little Liars) as Joe Blake, Rupert Evans (The Village) as Frank Frink, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat Legacy) as Tagomi, Joel De La Fuente (Hemlock Grove) as Inspector Kido, Rufus Sewell (Eleventh Hour) as John Smith and DJ Qualls (Z Nation) as Ed McCarthy.

The pilot is directed by David Semel (Heroes) and written by Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files), who both serve as executive producers. Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker are also executive producing, along with Jordan Sheehan (The Andromeda Strain), and executive producers Stewart Mackinnon and Christian Baute (The Invisible Woman).

The Man in the High Castle is one of six comedy and drama pilots on the network’s slate this season. All the pilots will be made available for viewers to review soon, and the network will make pick-up decisions based on the feedback.

ASCENSION
We’re just a few weeks away from the debut of Syfy’s upcoming space opera Ascension, and the network has dropped two new trailers from the event series.

The two trailers are packed with new footage, showing off a whole lot more of that hyper-stylized Mad Men-meets-Battlestar Galactica world. The network (Full disclosure: also Blastr’s corporate owner) is comparing the series to previous high-profile hits like Taken, Battlestar Galactica, Alice and Tin Man. If the series can match that level of quality and buzz, it’ll be a very good thing.

Here’s the synopsis:

In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, a mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship’s population to question the true nature of their mission.

To make sure you get the Battlestar Galactica vibe, they’ve cast former Cylon Tricia Helfer as Viondra Denniger, a beautiful, manipulative and dangerous power broker on the Ascension. The miniseries also stars Brian Van Holt (Cougar Town, The Bridge) as William Denninger, captain of the ship and Viondra’s husband. Andrea Roth (Rescue Me) plays Juliet Bryce, head doctor of the Ascension. Her relationship with her daughter, Nora (played by Jacqueline Byers) is difficult and strained.

The six-part series is set to run December 15-17, with two episodes airing each night in primetime. If the shortened run proves successful, the network could potentially pick the series up for a full season (ala Battlestar Galactica).

James Wolk ZOO
CBS has found its leading man for Zoo.

James Wolk, who last co-starred in The Crazy Ones for the network, has landed the starring role in the summer drama based on James Patterson's best-selling novel.

Zoo is a global thriller about a wave of violent animal attacks against humans sweeping the planet. Patterson's book, originally published in September 2012 by Little, Brown and Company is a New York Times best-seller and has been translated into six languages and sold more than 4 million copies.

Wolk will play Jackson Oz, a renegade American zoologist who spends his days running safaris in the wilds of Africa when he begins noticing the strange behavior of the animals. As the assaults become more cunning, coordinated and ferocious, he is thrust into the race to unlock the mystery of the pandemic before there’s no place left for people to hide.

Wolk is repped by ICM Partners, Greenlight Management and Frankfurt Kurnit. Prior to joining the CBS family, the actor appeared in Mad Men, Political Animals, Happy Endings, Shameless and broke through on the short-lived Fox drama Lone Star. On the big screen Wolk's credits include Always Woodstock, You Again and For a Good Time Call. He recently wrapped production on indies The Stanford Experiment and This Is Happening.

Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Scott Rosenberg are executive producers with James Mangold, Cathy Konrad, Patterson, Bill Robinson, Leopoldo Gout and Steve Bowen. Brad Anderson is directing. CBS Television Studios is producing.

In July, CBS inked a big domestic deal with Netflix that is said to be considerably richer than the ones Amazon made for Under the Dome and Extant, which has the company paying close to $1 million per episode.

Zoo will premiere in summer 2015.

Lionsgate Logo PENTACLE
Universal is printing money off the success of its $5-million-dollar hit Oujia, and according to Deadline, it looks like Lionsgate wants to use its own occult practices to manifest the original pitch Pentacle, a supernatural thriller from Vertigo Entertainment.

Based on an original pitch by hot Black List screenwriter Ian Fried (Gaslight, The Ever After Murders), Pentacle is described as a dark thriller set in the world of magic, with a style akin to the Amblin films of the '80s (Gremlins, Poltergeist). Fried currently has his supernatural "Ghostbusters-meets-Call of Duty" action script Spectral lensing in Budapest for Legendary Pictures and director Nic Mathieu for an August 2016 release, while another sci-fi pitch titled Prism is set up at Paramount.

No story details are announced, but a Pentacle is an amulet worn around one's neck that is used to evoke a spirit or energy during magic rituals, typically with a protective symbol on the reverse side… you know, just in case?

Vertigo's Roy Lee and Adam Stone will produce along with executive producer John Powers Middleton, all of whom were involved in Gil Kenan's upcoming Poltergeist remake for MGM and Fox.

Harvey Dent GOTHAM
Nicholas D'Agosto won't be making his debut as Harvey Dent on "Gotham" until Nov. 17, but the first images of the future Two-Face have been released by FOX. For the most part the photos don't give much away, but there's one in particular that stands out.

In the photo below, Harvey is speaking to Jim Gordon. If you look closely, you'll see what looks like the two-headed coin Two-Face uses in his hand. In the comics, Dent takes the coin from Don Maroni after half of his face is left deformed. With one side of the coin scarred, he flips it to make decisions.

More recently, in "The Dark Knight" Dent possessed the coin before his face was burned. He used it to win bets with friends and trick criminals into confessing.

If that is, in fact, the double-headed coin, it's another nice touch by "Gotham." The series hasn't shied away from showing trademarks associated with the Batman villains it's introducing, from Selina Kyle's love to Cats to Oswald Cobblepot's umbrella.

Even Edward Nygma, who is still firmly implanted on the side of the law, can't stop spinning riddles no matter how much it annoys those around him.

There's no word on how many episodes D'Agosto will appear in, but Dent is an important figure in the war for Gotham City. Hopefully that means he'll at least become a recurring character in the future.

"Gotham" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.

Asimov's Foundation Series ASIMOV'S FOUNDATION - HBO SERIES?
Isaac Asimov's landmark saga of future history is coming to cable TV.

The Wrap has revealed that Interstellar screenwriter Jonathan Nolan will pen and produce a series for HBO based on Asimov's legendary original trilogy, which encompasses Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation.

Last we heard, Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) was trying unsuccessfully to have the books adapted for the big screen and was making noise about a TV version as well. But when the rights lapsed, HBO snatched them up this past summer.

The books follow mathematician Hari Seldon, who develops a science called psychohistory that can predict large-scale future events. Seldon is able to foresee the fall of the current Galactic Empire and sees two alternative dark ages, one lasting 30,000 years and the other extending only a single millennium, that could come to pass before a second empire arises.

To help create the second, shorter outcome, Seldon assembles a "foundation" of engineers, thinkers and artisans and hides them at the far end of the galaxy to protect and expand on humanity's knowledge and sow the seeds of the new civilization.

Nolan dropped a major hint about the new project in a recent interview with Indiewire. Asked to name one piece of sci-fi that he really loved that not enough people knew about, he responded:

“Well, I f**king love the Foundation novels by Isaac Asimov. They're certainly not well-known, but that's a set of books I think everyone would benefit from reading. That's a set of books where the influence they have is just f**king massive. They have many imitators and many have been inspired by them, but go back and read those, and there are some ideas in those that'll set your f**king hair on fire."

He certainly seems passionate about it, doesn't he? Of course, diehard science fiction fans know all about Asimov's Hugo-winning trilogy (along with the four later books he wrote in the series) or should anyway, but mainstream audiences are probably not nearly as aware of them. If anything can put Asimov's writing back in the public eye, a bells-and-whistles HBO series can almost definitely do it.

Jonathan Nolan, meanwhile, is becoming as major a player as his big brother Christopher. In addition to co-writing Interstellar and the Dark Knight trilogy, he's the creator of CBS' Person of Interest and a new series based on Westworld, which is also in production at HBO.

VOLCANO ZOMBIES
Do you like your undead spawned from the mouth of a volcano and dripping molten rock? We've got you covered! Check out this trailer for The Burning Dead featuring the Machete madman Danny Trejo as an Indian shaman on the warpath for a tribe of evil, lava-spewing zombies.

Directed by Rene Perez and also starring Tom Downey, Moniqua Plante and Robert F. Lyons, this low-budget horror offering is a zany cocktail of gruesome zombie survival action mashed up with the familiar volcanic eruption disaster plot to create what looks like a freaky little fright film.

Uncork'd Entertainment picked up the North American rights to The Burning Dead at this year's American Film Market distribution conference and expects it to flow onto DVD, VOD and perhaps even a broadcast premiere sometime in 2015. Have a look, and don't step in smoking zombie spit.

Evil Dead EVIL DEAD SERIES
Starz is bringing Evil Dead to TV.

The premium network has greenlighted an original series, entitled Ash vs. Evil Dead, that will serve as a follow-up to the horror comedy film franchise, it was announced Monday.

Original Evil Dead director Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell will return for the 10-episode half-hour series, slated for a 2015 premiere.

The series marks Raimi and Tapert's return to Starz following their Spartacus run. Raimi revealed plans to continue the Evil Dead story on the small screen back at Comic-Con.

Campbell reprises his role as the title character Ash, a stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last three decades avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons — personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its evil grip.

Raimi will direct the pilot, which he will co-write with his brother, Ivan (Darkman, Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell), and Tom Spezialy (Chuck, Reaper, Desperate Housewives). Sam Raimi will executive produce, along with Tapert and Campbell. Ivan Raimi will co-executive produce, while Aaron Lam (Spartacus) will produce.

"Starz first worked with Sam and Rob on Spartacus, and we are thrilled to be back in business with them,” said Carmi Zlotnik, managing director of Starz. “With Sam writing and directing and Bruce Campbell returning to the screen, we are certain the show will give Evil Dead fans around the world the fix they’ve been craving.”

“Evil Dead has always been a blast. Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it,” said Sam Raimi.

"I'm really excited to bring this series to the Evil Dead fans worldwide — it's going to be everything they have been clamoring for: serious deadite ass-kicking and plenty of outrageous humor,” said Campbell.

“Starz has always been a great creative partner and we are excited to be working with them on this project,” added Tapert.

The original Evil Dead film, released in 1981, centered on Ash and his group of friends who travel to an isolated cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release demons intent on possessing the living. The film spawned two sequels and a 2013 reboot, which earned $97 million at the worldwide box office.

Ash vs. Evil Dead was packaged by CAA and Hansen Jacobson. Starz will retain domestic and international multiplatform rights, including TV, home entertainment and digital.

This marks the latest cult property to be rebooted following Showtime's limited-series order of David Lynch's Twin Peaks. For Starz, the new Evil Dead series joins a scripted portfolio that includes Survivor's Remorse, Outlander, Da Vinci's Demons, Power, Black Sails and the upcoming Flesh and Bone.

THE FLASH
The CW has just released a new trailer that teases the next few episodes (specifically, episodes five through nine) of their new hit series, "The Flash"! Check it out in the player below and catch the series' fifth episode, "Plastique," tomorrow night at 8:00pm ET/PT.

Directed by Dermott Downs and written by Aaron Helbing & Todd Helbing & Brooke Eikmeier, "Plastique" begins when a bomb goes off downtown. As a result, the army, led by General Eiling (guest star Clancy Brown), rolls in and takes over the case, much to Joe's surprise. Suspicious, Joe tells Barry that he and his friends at S.T.A.R. Labs should look into the army's involvement. Wells informs the team that Eiling was experimenting on his men to turn them into super soldiers. Cisco confirms one of Eiling's soldiers, Bette Sans Souci (Kelly Frye), was at the bomb site. The Flash tracks her down and realizes that she's not setting off the bombs, she is a meta-human who can blow things up just by touching them. Meanwhile, when Joe learns Iris is writing about "the streak," he tells Barry to make her stop. Barry realizes Iris won't listen to him so he decides to have The Flash pay her a visit.

Also, if you missed it last Friday, "Arrow" released a similar preview of its own upcoming episodes.

LEGO DC COMICS SUPER HEROES: JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. BIZARRO LEAGUE
Warner Bros Home Entertainment has released (via IGN) the trailer for their upcoming follow-up to the TV special "Batman Be-Leaguered" with LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League.

Though the film is set to feature the Justice League going up against their Bizarro counterparts, it will also feature major big bad Darkseid in his LEGO debut. Set to be released February 10, 2015, check back here for more information on the release as we learn it. Zootopia ZOOTOPIA
Disney has a full slate, with 21 tent-pole movies being released in the next three years via Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Pixar as well as the trusty Disney brand, and it looks like two of their previously "Untitled Disney Animation" slots have now been filled with Zootopia (see image above) and Moana (image below), both of which will be released in 3D.

Zootopia will bow nationwide on March 4, 2016, and centers on a fast-talking fox on the run after being framed for a crime he didn't commit. He teams with the self-righteous rabbit cop who's chasing him to unlock a bigger conspiracy. It is being directed by Byron Howard (Tangled) and written by Jared Bush.

Directed by the team of Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog, Aladdin), the South Pacific-set Moana will see release on November 23, 2016, and follows the title navigator as she sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her journey she teams up with the legendary demi-god Maui to traverse the open ocean on a voyage where they will encounter enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Henry Cavill up in the air!

Filming on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is currently underway in Chicago, and we’ve got some cool videos for you to see and awesome high-res set pics of Supes taking flight. Oh, and Amy Adams’ feisty Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane is also there.

In the videos, we can see the Henry Cavill all dressed up in his Man of Steel garb, hanging by steel wires up, up in the air on the set of Zack Snyder’s upcoming superhero flick. That must take nerves of steel, and it's nice to see some practical effects at work.

You can go look at the Son of Krypton taking flight in a couple of videos here, and we've got another one from the set that you see here.

We also have some pretty cool set pics that you can see below of Cavill with co-star Amy Adams, who, of course, plays Superman’s lady love Lois Lane.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will fly into theaters on March 25, 2016.

ORPHAN BLACK
The first, tantalizing teaser for Orphan Black’s third season has arrived — and we can’t wait to see what’s next for the Clone Club.

The critically under-watched BBC America original series has been one of the best sci-fi shows on the air the past few seasons, and year three promises to take a big jump by introducing a fascinating new angle to the show’s clone mythology. In case you need to catch up, the network will be airing fan-favorite episodes with a mini-marathon on Nov. 28.

The new teaser chooses the perfect soundtrack to set the mood, as we get a peek at the science behind all the different flavors of the uber-talented Tatiana Maslany. There also seems to be an easter egg or two hidden in the teaser (note the colors of the strands of DNA on the show logo).

From male clones to the mysterious Castor project, season three promises a boatload of great mysteries we're dying to unravel. Despite the teaser clip, there’s still no word on an air date, but we’d think the new episodes will probably show up in summer 2015.

MARVEL SECRET WARS
Marvel Comics has just ended the speculation about what its big event of next year is going to be.

A new teaser trailer released this morning by the company reveals that the Secret Wars story arc it has been teasing for 2015 will revolve around the creation of a new Battleworld.

Battleworld, in the previous Secret Wars comic-book run, was a place, created out of pieces of different planets by the Beyonder, where Marvel superheroes and villains could congregate to fight. This time around, it appears that Battleworld will be constructed from parts of many different alternate Earths seen in storylines like Planet Hulk, Civil War, Age of Apocalypse and others.

The teaser, which includes nods to 15 or so different narratives and an image from Alex Ross featuring a tremendous number of characters, suggests that this will be an epic confrontation indeed, with the inhabitants of numerous universes and Earths fighting for survival (writer Jonathan Hickman has been hinting at this in his recent Avengers run as well). By the way, if this sound kind of similar to DC's recently announced Convergence event ... you wouldn't be alone in thinking that.

Comic Book Resources has a pretty detailed rundown of how Marvel's recent titles may all connect to and impact Secret Wars. Marvel still has many details to provide about the book, as well as its tie-ins, but in the meantime watch the teaser below and tell us if you're psyched for the company's big 2015 event series and the return of Battleworld.

Big Hero BIG HERO 6
Before you see Big Hero 6, a Disney movie based on the comic book of the same name -- and you should, because it's intelligent, heartwarming and fun -- we first need to give you a heads-up: It's more than a movie about a boy named Hiro and his rubbery robot, Baymax. It's also about grief and how it changes the ones who have suffered a loss.

If that sounds deep, it's because underneath its squishy, childlike exterior, there's a solid core to Big Hero 6 ... which is also how you could describe the loveable Baymax.

According to one of the film's two directors, Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh), Baymax's squishable look was inspired by his trip to Carnegie Mellon University, where they met a researcher doing "soft robotics, which is going to be used in the future as a nurse robot."

Soft robotics? It doesn't sound much like a Disney film. That's because Hall and co-director Chris Williams (Bolt) have created a new world, one that's mostly based on a "relatively obscure" Marvel comic book. "I loved just the playfulness of [the books]," Hall said. "They were entertaining and kind of light, and the whole thing was a love letter to Japanese pop culture."

But instead of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they've given us a near-future hybrid of San Francisco and Tokyo: San Fransokyo. Although Big Hero 6 doesn't give us cameos of Iron Man or Captain America, there's the tiniest bit of Blade Runner in this mix, as well as slivers of Akira and the works of Hayao Miyazaki, Hall said.

Better yet, there's real-world technology here. Hall and Williams dotted the skyscape with zeppelins. And though they're never outright explained, the directors told me they are actually airborne wind turbines, helium-filled devices that convert wind power into electricity—albeit more colorful versions of the ones that are, according to Hall, in prototype right now.

Hall said, "The core relationship in the story is really a 14-year-old super-genius and a robot ... we knew technology was going to be important, so we made it the superpower of the movie. 'Supertech' is really the superpower." But "I wanted to ground it and make sure we were being logical and [the character's abilities] had a reality to it."

One of the reasons that the characters' abillities are real is because they themselves invented their supertech. Williams said, "We really liked the idea of making a movie that can celebrate smart kids who make the most of their potential."

To get their science right, the directors also consulted roboticists and grief counselors, to finesse their terminology. Then came the expert on human development.

Williams said, "We researched everything in great depth and great detail. We had someone come in talk about puberty and the changes that take place during puberty, because we were going to be talking about that in the film. It was an awkward meeting, actually."

Another awkward moment is the fact that I know a fabulous spoiler and can't tell you about it, because the directors pleaded for my silence. You can see it for yourselves ... if you stay for the credits, that is.<> Oh, and one last thing you need to know before you see Big Hero 6: Directors Hall and Williams said, "There are plenty of easter eggs in the film. Pay very close attention to Fred's room."

Big Hero 6 is in cinemas today.

Mark Wahlberg SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN
The Six Billion Dollar Man is still on its bionic track, with Mark Wahlberg set to star in the upcoming reboot and Peter Berg to sit in the director's chair.

Rumors of Wahlberg starring in the film have been swirling for a couple of months now, but now it looks like it’s almost a done deal.

Here’s Deadline’s report about the upcoming flick:

Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg, the duo behind the critically acclaimed and box office success Lone Survivor, are re-teaming for the feature film version of The Six Billion Dollar Man with various writers circling the project for The Weinstein Co.’s Dimension Films label. (Yes, billion with a ‘b’). Berg will direct and Wahlberg is attached to star in the film about former astronaut Steve Austin who, after a horrific crash of an experimental plane, is saved by doctors when he is fitted with bionic replacements — both legs, his right arm and left eye. With super-human power, he becomes a force to be reckoned with for the government as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence.

The story is based on Martin Caidin’s sci-fi book Cyborg. It became a bestseller when it was published back in 1972, and the book inspired the 1970s television series The Six Million Dollar Man, then starring Lee Majors as Steve Austin. The popular TV show had a large fan base and also spawned a spinoff: The Bionic Woman with Lindsay Wagner.

Filming on The Six Billion Dollar Man should begin next year, with Dimension eying a 2016 release.

Mentalist THE MENTALIST RETURNING FOR FINAL SEASON
CBS has confirmed that, as widely expected, the seventh season of "The Mentalist" will be its last.

The network has announced some of its winter programming plans, with "The Mentalist" and "Undercover Boss" filling in for "The Good Wife," "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race" while those shows go on hiatus. How do two shows replace three? Well, "The Mentalist" will be changing nights midway through its run.

The show will premiere at 9:30 p.m. ET (approximately, depending on the end time of an NFL doubleheader) and 9 p.m. PT Sunday, Nov. 30. It will take over "The Good Wife's" timeslot for five weeks, with Alicia Florrick and Co. returning Jan. 4, 2015. "The Mentalist" then moves to 8 p.m. Wednesdays starting Jan. 7. A two-hour series finale is set for Feb. 18, a week before "Survivor" begins its spring season.

"Undercover Boss," meanwhile, will also launch on Sundays, debuting at 8:30 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on Dec. 14, when that slot's regular occupant, "Madam Secretary," would have been in repeats. "Boss" airs there for three weeks, then slides into "The Amazing Race's" 8 p.m. Friday spot starting Jan. 2.

As for "The Amazing Race," both it and "Survivor" will premiere their spring cycles on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with 90-minute episodes. "TAR" will move back to its regular Friday spot on Feb. 27.

MARVEL UNIVERSE
If Marvel Studios is to be believed, its company's journey over the past 75 years is just as riveting as the superhero stories is tells on the big screen. It's an argument that was made very well in the ABC special "Marvel: 75 Years, From Pulp to Pop!," which aired on Nov. 4.

But the true gems of the hour-long special wasn't the company discussing what happened in its history, but rather what is coming in its future. "Marvel: 75 Years, From Pulp to Pop!" showed the first footage of "Ant-Man," a new look at "Avengers: Age of Ultron," a discussion of the Marvel Netflix shows like "Daredevil" and ABC's "Agents of SHIELD," as well as several tasty morsels of "Agents of SHIELD's" midseason companion, "Agent Carter." Here's a breakdown of the new content that was shown.

'Ant-Man'

The first footage to be seen of "Ant-Man" is actually behind-the-scenes footage. Still, it provides a good taste of what's in store, revealing Paul Rudd's Scott Lang and Michael Douglas's Hank Pym hanging out in what looks to be Pym's lab. The coolest scene in the footage is Lang walking up to the folded Ant-Man suit in all its red and black glory. "Ant-Man" hits theaters on July 17, 2015.

'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

Considering how much fans have already seen of "Age of Ultron," there wasn't much new in thoe behind-the-scenes shots in this trailer. With that being said, there were some neat practical car stunts being shown off. The segment's the coolest scene was definitely the long take of Elizabeth Olsen hovering in the air as Scarlet Witch. "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is due out on May 1, 2015.

'Agent Carter'

Hayley Atwell credits the fans' support of Peggy Carter since "Captain America: The First Avenger" for being what brought "Agent Carter" to life. In addition to a behind-the-scenes shot of Peggy walking through an office, this special featured a new long scene between Peggy and Dominic Cooper's Howard Stark, where he tasks her with keeping an eye out for one of his creations that is hitting the market before he takes off on a boat and sails away.

Peggy then meets Stark's butler, James D'Arcy's Edwin Jarvis, who apparently had been tailing her in an alleyway before properly introducing himself. Cut to Peggy going "to work," aka having an awesome fight scene with a man in a tiny apartment. If the goal was this special was to get audiences on board for "Agent Carter," the sneak peek (below) should do the trick. "Agent Carter" will premiere in January 2015.

Angela ANGELA - ASGARD's ASSASSIN

She is an Asgardian. Cast out of her home and wanting nothing to do with Asgard, Angela must now strike out on her own! But what does Angela have that both Asgard and Heven want? And why are they so eager to get it? "The story is Angela is basically on the run," says co-writer Kieron Gillen regarding the initial story arc in an interview with Marvel.com. "It gives her a chance to interact with a lot of different people, so, by the end of the first arc, we really get a sense of who Angela is vis-a-vis the Marvel Universe. This is how she interacts with Asgardians, this is how she interacts with Angels. This is how she interacts with the Guardians and the cosmic stuff. Here is how she interacts with the Earth. You get a sense of who she is and where she fits into the larger picture."

BIG HERO 6
Disney’s plan to fully capitalize on the Marvel license is in full swing, and the new kid-focused superhero team Big Hero 6 opens this weekend. Want a peek at the company’s newest, youngest heroes?

No, you won’t find Iron Man or Thor helping save San Fransokyo, but Baymax, Hiro and the gang look more than up to the task of taking on their own rogues gallery. We were a little iffy on this one when it entered development, since it was based on such a little-known series, but the more footage we see, the more excited we are to find out what the folks behind Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen can do with the superhero genre.

Plus, c’mon — Baymax is friggin’ adorable, right?

With the film opening wide this Friday, the studio has released a ton of new footage introducing the rest of the team and showing off some behind-the-scenes stuff for how they put it all together. It looks like a quirky, cuddly version of Avengers Lite — but there’s nothing wrong with that.

Limitless LIMITLESS COMING TO TV?
The 2011 movie Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper, may be making the jump to TV.

According to Variety, CBS has given the go-ahead to produce a pilot based on the movie, in which Cooper played a man who achieves incredibe mental powers through the use of a mysterious new drug.

Cooper actually got his start in TV but, being a big movie star now, is not likely to reprise his role on either the pilot or the proposed series. But he is listed as an executive producer on the TV version, along with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci -- yes, those guys again -- and several others, including the original movie's director, Neil Burger, who is on board to direct the pilot.

The series will start where the movie ended, with the main character, Eddie, expanding his powers while at the same time possibly weaning himself off the drug, which is called NZT.

Will Eddie become a sort of psychic superhero? Will he run for president, as it was hinted at the end of the movie? We have no idea, but with Limitless the latest movie to get a TV adaptation (more than two dozen are supposedly on the way), we may soon find out.

Woman in Black THE WOMAN IN BLACK
Relativity Media has debuted the new poster for The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death, coming to theaters on January 2 and starring Phoebe Fox, Jeremy Irvine and Helen McCrory.

When the group takes up residence at the Eel Marsh House, 40 years after Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) investigated the first haunting, Eve soon realizes they are not alone. The longer they stay in the house, the more the awful past of the residence unravels itself and the evil spirit that lurks around them threatens the well-being of the children. With the help of a pilot (Jeremy Irvine), Eve does all that she can to protect the children and discover the truth behind the Woman in Black.

Mystery Monster MYSTERY MONSTER FILM
With The Mummy already set to hit on June 24, 2016, Universal Pictures has set a mystery Universal Monsters film for release on Friday, April 21, 2017. It's the first film to claim that date.

There's no word yet on what the focus of the mystery film will be, but it will follow The Mummy, which boasts a screenplay by Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts and is set to be directed by Alex Kurtzman. Kurtzman also serves as a producer alongside Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel. Bobby Cohen will executive produce.

A Van Helsing feature is also said to be in the works, although there's no word on whether or not that might be the project to claim this new date.

Agent Carter AGENT CARTER NEWS
If last week’s tease of Agent Carter wasn’t enough to satiate fans, Marvel has more of Peggy Carter on the way before her own show begins.

Marvel announced that Hayley Atwell will reprise her role as agent Carter in the Nov. 18th episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The episode, titled “The Things We Bury,” will largely revolve around a S.H.I.E.L.D./Hydra showdown, while Ward kidnaps his senator brother, Christian Ward, to revisit the pair’s past.

Still, “Bury” will make time for a Carter cameo and give viewers another glimpse into what she’s been up to in a post-Captain America world. Marvel is remaining mum on just how exactly she’ll play into the episode’s events, though it’s a safe bet she’ll be as badass she was in her previous appearance this season.

The episode will also include a guest spot from a Marvel-adjacent star, as Lou Ferrigno Jr. will play Agent Hauer in “Bury.” His father, Lou Ferrigno, the first live-action Hulk, has stayed in the Marvel family, having made a brief appearance in The Incredible Hulk and lent his voice to the green goliath in The Avengers.

3001 3001: THE FINAL ODYSSEY
If you’re a fan of Arthur C. Clarke, prepare to get about as excited as a group of monkey men discovering a monolith, because Syfy is bringing the third installment of the author’s Odyssey books to life with Ridley Scott.

Announced today, the network revealed it is working with Scott’s company Scott Free Productions and Warner Horizon Television -– with the full support of the estates of both the author and 2001: A Space Odyssey director Stanley Kubrick -- to adapt Clarke’s novel 3001: The Final Odyssey into a miniseries.

With an adaptation written by Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean, Collateral), who will serve as executive producer along with Scott and David W. Zucker, the plot begins with the discovery of the frozen body of character Frank Poole from 2001: A Space Odyssey and will resolve the story that spanned more than three decades. According to the announcement, Final Odyssey is a man-out-of-time story that “offers an extraordinary range of complex characters with conflicting agendas, stunning visuals, and dark thematic meditations on the final fate of all Humankind.”

Clarke’s 1968 novel 2001: A Space Odyssey was being written at the same time he and Kubrick co-authored the screenplay (based on Clarke’s short story “The Sentinel”) for the Academy Award-winning classic, which Kubrick helmed. The novel’s sequel, 2010: Odyssey Two, was also adapted into a movie, directed by Peter Hyams. The third installment of the series, Final Odyssey was published in 1997.

Said Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) about the project:

“I have always been a fan of Clarke’s extraordinary Odyssey series, and certainly Kubrick’s adaptation of 2001. I am thrilled to be part of bringing that legacy to audiences and continuing the great cinematic tradition that this story and its creators deserve.”

“Arthur C. Clarke is the father of modern science fiction,” added Syfy President Dave Howe. “We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Scott Free and Warner Horizon Television to bring to the screen, for the very first time, the final chapter of this extraordinary masterpiece.”

Syfy’s announcement follows its greenlighting of another classic Clarke novel, Childhood’s End, which begins production later this year.

Convergence CONVERGENCE
Two of DC’s biggest comic runs are about to come together, and now the comic company has finally dropped some intel on the epic Convergence.

The new miniseries will be led by a nine-part weekly series penned by veteran TV writer Jeff King (White Collar, Continuum) and will feature several acclaimed artists. DC notes that this should be one of the “most epic and inclusive events” the company has ever constructed as it digs deep into the multiverse with numerous worlds and hundreds of characters.

The event will spin out of the finales of ongoing series The New 52: Future’s End (which features Batman Beyond! -Ed.) and Earth 2: World’s End. According to USA Today, the story follows Brainiac after he’s trapped cities from various timelines and planets that have ended, brought them in domes to a planet outside of time and space, and is now opening them for a great experiment to see what happens when all these folks meet. What could go wrong?

According to DC, the story takes place outside of time and space—on the question mark, just below Earth 29 and above Chaos, on the Map of the Multiverse—and introduces the new villain Telos. USA Today has debuted the first art from the special (which you can check out below) and also chatted with DC co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee about what to expect.

Check out a few excerpts below:

Lee: “What we're really addressing is they all exist and have existed and exist within the framework of the New 5. Convergence is in many ways the most meta epic event we've done.”

DiDio: “Because this involved so much deep lore and fiction from DC Comics, it was great to have someone come in with a fresh set of eyes to look at it and make sure that it's as open and accessible to all fans. Not just the people who have been reading DC throughout the years.”

The series will be published from April-May of 2015.

MINIONS

Scarecrow GOTHAM NEWS
With so many of Batman's future foes appearing on "Gotham," you can't help but wonder who else will be introduced on the show. Harvey Dent's first episode has been announced, while producers have talked about The Joker and Mr. Freeze showing up down the line.

However, there's another familiar and horrifying face heading to "Gotham." During a panel for the show at Stan Lee's Comikaze, executive producer Danny Cannon revealed writers are currently working on an episode that introduces Scarecrow.

"We're breaking the story now," Cannon says. On "Gotham," the villain will be seen as a child, before he takes on the Scarecrow moniker. In fact, it's something that will be passed on to him from his father, which will create an eventual enemy for Batman while still having a possible adversary for Jim Gordon.

Whether it will be Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow in the comics and Christopher Nolan's "Batman" trilogy) remains to be seen, but the idea of fear gas on "Gotham" is both terrifying and fun. Nobody will be safe.

Idris Elba AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
Thor will see a couple of familiar faces in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Idris Elba, who plays Heimdall in the Thor films, has confirmed to The Telegraph that he and fellow Thor star Tom Hiddleston will both appear in the highly anticipated Avengers sequel.

"I'm in Avengers," Elba revealed. "And I’m doing a scene with Chris Hemsworth [Thor] and Tom Hiddleston [Loki], and they're like, [whispers] – 'Aren’t you [meant to be] in Ibiza?' "

Elba had taken a summer residency as a DJ at an Ibiza club but was able to squeeze in time for the film before it wrapped in August. Reps for Hiddleston and Elba did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The actors do not appear in the first Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer.

Elba also told the Telegraph that he had to do Thor 2 reshoots in England on the day after he came back from shooting Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom in South Africa, and the tight schedule was tough on him. "[On the Thor 2 set,] I was like, 'This is torture, man. I don’t want to do this.' My agent said: 'You have to, it’s part of the deal.' "

Disney releases Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015.

Ouija WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
Thanks to a Halloween boost, Universal's Ouija held far better than expected in its second weekend to tie with Jake Gyllenhaal's new indie crime-thriller Nightcrawler for the North American box office crown.

Ouija took in an estimated $10.9 million from 2,899 theaters for a 10-day domestic total of $35 million. Open Road Films' critically acclaimed Nightcrawler, playing in 2,766 locations, is also estimating a weekend take of $10.9 million.

The race won't be called until Monday morning when final grosses are tallied, although most rivals have Ouija slightly ahead.,p> Overseas, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wowed with a China debut of $26.5 million for an international weekend take of $34.7 million and foreign total of $244 million. Globally, the Paramount title has now earned $434.5 million. Ouija grossed another $5.7 million internationally from 19 territories, including a No. 1 finish in the U.K. with $2.2 million, for an early foreign total of $7.7 million and world cume of $42.7 million.

In North America, box office observers had expected Nightcrawler to win by a safe margin, but Ouija fell just 45 percent, far less than most horror titles.

That doesn't mean it was a great weekend overall due to Halloween falling on a Friday for the first time in six years. Friday revenue was down a whopping 40 percent over 2013, and Hollywood studios considered the weekend such a wash that they didn't release one new film, leaving the marquee free for indie offerings — and the rerelease of Saw.

Saw, celebrating its 10th anniversary, came in well below expectations, grossing just $650,000 from 2,063 locations as horror fans clearly opted for Ouija.

Produced and financed by Bold Films, Nightcrawler marks the feature directorial debut of Dan Gilroy and stars Gyllenhaal as a hungry freelance journalist who looks to further his career by exposing L.A.'s underground crime scene. Open Road Films is handling the $8.5 million film domestically.

"Halloween clipped us a little bit, but we have a nice, long run ahead of us," said Open Road chief marketing officer Jason Cassidy. "We feel great about where we are and with the darker nature of the movie, we thought Halloween was an opportune time to go out. Also, there were not a lot of other wide releases."

Overseas, Nightcrawler opened in a handful of markets, earning $1.8 million.

Nightcrawler, also starring Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed and Bill Paxton, is one of the best reviewed movies of the year, although audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore. Males dominated (56 percent), while 66 percent of moviegoers were over the age of 25.

Halloween or no Halloween, Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth's British sci-fi thriller Before I Go to Sleep quickly bombed at the U.S. box office for distributor Clarius Entertainment, earning an estimated $2 million from 1,935 theaters.

That makes it the worst wide opening of Kidman's and Firth's respective careers, not accounting for inflation. Kidman's previous lowest was Birth ($2.4 million) in 2002, while Firth's was The Last Legion ($2.7 million) in 2007.

Scott Free, Millennium and StudioCanal partnered on Before I Go to Sleep, directed by Rowan Joffe and distributed by Clarius Entertainment in the U.S. Based on the book by S. J. Watson, the film stars Kidman as a woman who wakes up every day with no memory of her life since she was in her early 20s.

Elsewhere, Fury, Gone Girl and The Book of Life rounded out the top five, while Bill Murray's indie comedy St. Vincent sported the best hold of the year for a film in its second weekend in nationwide release. St. Vincent, from The Weinstein Co. and Chernin Entertainment, grossed $7.8 million from 2,552 locations for a domestic total of $19.5 million and a decline of zero percent.

Disney's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day also continued to enjoy a strong hold, falling a mere 10 percent in its fourth weekend to $6.5 million for a domestic total of $53.6 million and global cume of $69.5 million.

Here are the estimated top 10 films for the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the domestic box office:

Doctor Who Comic DOCTOR WHO COMICS
When Peter Capaldi makes his "Doctor Who" comic book debut, the BBC and Titan Comics are turning it into an event. Whovians have already seen the covers from the new line of Tenth and Eleventh Doctor comics, and one of the Twelfth Doctor books looks very similar.

The other covers include a photo of Capaldi labeled "100% rebel," an illustration of Clara and even a blank page to signify the Doctor's fresh start.

While the new Tenth and Eleventh Doctor comics will hit stores on July 23, the Twelfth Doctor issues will released in October, after Season 8 of the show premieres.

Spiderman-animated SPIDERMAN ANIMATED SERIES
Wall crawlers, it's time to talk about Spider-Man: The Animated Series.

Producer and head writer John Semper Jr. gathered up his cast for a reunion panel Saturday for a discussion 20 years in the making. He's previously avoided talking about the series, but said he'll dedicate the next year to honoring its memory.

He grew up on half-hour dramas, which told serious stories in under 30 minutes, and took that model to Spider-Man.

"I wanted there to be a real, serious underpinning to the show, Semper told the crowd at Comikaze Expo in downtown Los Angeles.

But here's the big news: Semper revealed that the cast (including J. Jonah Jameson himself Ed Asner) has agreed to reunite for an upcoming project they plan on using crowdfunding to finance. The animated project would be titled Rocket Men, which would harken back to retro-pulp style of something like The Rocketeer.

Spider-Man ran for five seasons from 1994-1998 on Fox and was groundbreaking at the time — treating the material seriously (sometimes to the point of melodrama) and getting stellar performances out of its sprawling voicecast. While Batman: The Animated Series earned more acclaim (it won four Emmys), Spider-Man more than holds its own twenty years later. The series managed to open up the Marvel Universe, deftly talking on storylines as personal as Spidey's battles with Harry Osborn and as vast as The Secret Wars. Many fans consider it the definitive animated incarnation of the wall crawler.

The panel started with a sizzle reel showcasing some of the stars' best work. It was a proud moment for the cast, some of whom hadn't seen the clips in years or decades. This clip, in which Mary Jane's clone dies, had Saratoga Ballantine (Mary Jane) almost in tears, she said.

The other actors — Christopher Daniel Barnes (Spider-Man), Jennifer Hale (Felicia Hardy), Gary Imhoff (Harry Osborne), Rodney Saulsberry (Robbie Robertson), Gregg Berger (Mysterio and Kraven The Hunter), and Patrick Labyorteaux (Flash Thompson) — said one thing that made the show special was that they recorded their parts together in the studio, something that rarely happens with voiceover work these days.

"It was like a radio show. We were all in the booth together and we were all interacting with each other. And you feed off of that," said Barnes, who also called playing Spider-Man a big responsibility.

"You are the current avatar of this Marvel deity. This is our Iliad. This is our Odyssey," Barnes said. "It touches something universal in us. When you get the chance to be the voice of that character, that means something."

While Ballantine got big applause for reciting her iconic Mary Jane line ("Face it Tiger, you just hit the jackpot"), the biggest cheers went to a pre-taped video message from Ed Asner, who reprised his role as J. Jonah Jameson. Asner's Jameson couldn't understand why everyone was wasting time talking about a TV show — he'd rather be at Spider-Man's funeral.

Taking fan questions, Semper said the series finale was meant to be a happy one that also had the potential to keep going. The 1998 episode ended with Spider-Man going off to find Mary Jane, who had been lost in another dimension.

"I knew that we were finished with 65 episodes, but I thought maybe we'd have a little bit longer. I thought I made it very clear at at the very end that he was going to get to Mary Jane, but apparently I traumatized all of you. So I apologize for that," Semper joked. "I was leaving that door open in case by some miracle they said we were going to do a few more. "

Stay tuned for more from Spider-Man in the coming year. Semper will be posting updates on this Facebook page, as well as on this website. He's also got a series of podcasts planned.

Cast-Crew of Babylon 5 EARLY CAST PHOTO
One of the reasons I love Facebook is the opportunity it provides to share photos. This one came in today from J. Michael Straczynski:

Here's a rarity: a shot of the very first time nearly all of the Babylon 5 cast were assembled for the pilot, along with me and fellow producer Doug Netter

Sleepy Hollow Saccubus SLEEPY HOLLOW NEWS
The residents of "Sleepy Hollow" will have their hands full in "Heartless," which sees a hair-raising monster of the week coming to town to literally suck the life out of people with her tempting, seductive ways.

Above is Zap2it's exclusive first look at the succubus that Ichabod (Tom Mison) and Abbie (Nicole Beharie) are charged with taking down, after Henry (John Noble) sends the succubus to drain the life out its victims.

"Heartless" airs Monday, Nov. 10 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.

Gambit GAMBIT
There is good news on the Gambit movie front today. According to Deadline (via Collider), 20th Century Fox has hired screenwriter Josh Zetumer (the RoboCop remake) to pen the script for the film. But the really exciting revelation is that Zetumer will be working from a treatment written by legendary Marvel Comics writer Chris Claremont, who created the Ragin' Cajun in 1990 with artist Jim Lee and first introduced him in the pages of Uncanny X-Men, near the end of Claremont's still-unbeaten 16-year run on that book.

The plot of the movie remains a secret, but Channing Tatum is officially "attached," as they say in the business, to star. Gambit's only other live-action film appearance to date was in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in which he was played by Taylor Kitsch, but we'll just move along and not talk about that.

As for Zetumer, he had a pretty large rock to roll up the hill with that RoboCop remake -- and actually didn't do such a bad job -- so we're open to seeing what he can do with Remy LeBeau, especially since he's working with material provided by Claremont.

Tatum said earlier this summer about the movie, "We’re gonna try to change up the superhero-type movie, maybe give us something a little different. In my opinion, Gambit is an outlier in the X-Men [universe], he’s not a good guy in a way. He smokes, he drinks, he’s chasing women, he’s a thief. I’m not like an X-Men head, but I just love him.”

There is speculation that Gambit will make a cameo in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse before leading his own movie, but that remains a rumor for now.

NEW STAR WARS BOOK
Here's a tantalizing trailer for a deluxe new book published this week featuring the astonishing array of award-winning costumes worn in the original Star Wars Trilogy. From Tusken Raider tunics and Jawa robes to Vader's cape and Boba Fett's armor, Star Wars Costumes: The Original Trilogy is a $60, 226-page coffee-table volume examining the artists, designers and costumers who created the thousands of outfits seen on screen when the three films were first released from 1977-1983. Author Brandon Alinger was granted an all-access pass to the Lucasfilm Archives at Skywalker Ranch in California to photograph and research the history of these iconic costumes.

Try on this fashionable teaser for the premium, large-format book, which also includes interviews with the actual costumers, original sketches, production notes and concept art.

Lego SHIELD LEGO PROJECTS
Though the folks at LEGO are obviously a bunch of geeky geniuses to come up with all those awesome licensed sets that are on the market, they also open up the creation and selection process to the public — and here are a few we need to make a reality.

The company uses the extremely cool LEGO Ideas website to allow fans to come up with intriguing designs and present them for public review among other LEGO fans. From there, it’s survival of the fittest. Whichever designs come up with 10,000 up-votes gets an official review by the company and gets a shot at making it onto toy store shelves around the country.

Though a boatload of cool designs have already made it through the wringer, there are still more than enough sci-fi and genre-inspired sets that deserve to exist. We’ve lined up a handful we’d like to see happen below, and we’d love to hear which ones you’re pulling for.

Rocketeer NETFLIX NOVEMBER OFFERINGS
Every month, Netflix removes some movies and shows from its always-popular Watch Instantly streaming service, and other movies and shows take their places. Whenever that happens, and a healthy crop of genre flicks just happens to be heading to the service, we like to give you a little heads-up, because we want you to enjoy your time on the couch.

In November, Netflix has decidedly to -- a bit puzzlingly -- add several new horror titles to the mix, including one that left the streaming service just before the Halloween season began. That's bad timing, but you might still be coasting on horror fumes, so have at them if you like. Plus, we've got one of the most underrated superhero movies ever, a celebrated new post-apocalyptic thriller, an indie drama with a surreal twist, an old Disney fantasy for the kids and more.

Sharon Stone AGENT X
TNT is moving forward with Agent X.

The Turner-owned cabler has handed out a 10-episode series order for Sharon Stone starrer Agent X, the network announced Friday. The series will debut on TNT in the second half of 2015.

The drama centers on an unseen person who works to protect the country and its citizens from all manner of threats by any means necessary in times of extreme crisis when traditional law and government aren't in a position to help. Created by the original founding fathers but hidden from the view of the public, there is an agent of unknown identity that is trained and ready to serve -- deployed only at the careful discretion of the vice president. The drama is described as National Treasure meets The Bourne Identity. From The Bourne Identity's William Blake Herron, the action/adventure project hails from Turner Originals. Armyan Bernstein (Air Force One, Children of Men, Castle) is on board to executive produce.

The drama has been in the works since September 2013 and was passed over for a series pickup in May when TNT opted to retool the project, which also stars Jeff Hephner and Gerald McRaney.

Stone stars as America's first female vice president, Natalie Maccabee, a woman with brains, beauty and a cool composure that belies a restless mind. After the death of her husband, a Senate candidate, Natalie opted to run in his place. After a rapid rise as a political star, she now finds herself the newly elected vice president of the United States. Initially apprehensive that her job will be ceremonial in nature, she soon learns that it comes with a top-secret duty: protecting the Constitution in times of great crisis with the aid of her Chief Steward and a secret operative designated "Agent X."

Agent X comes as TNT recently canceled Dallas and will conclude Falling Skies next year. The network's drama slate includes Franklin & Bash, Perception, Rizzoli & Isles, The Last Ship, Major Crimes, Legends, Murder in the First, The Librarians, Public Morals and Proof.
