TEEN WOLF: According to the Hollywood Reporter, UPN is developing a drama series loosely based on the 1985 Michael J. Fox feature TEEN WOLF. UPN will try to capture the BUFFY audience by putting out a series about a college student who discovers that he's a werewolf. Warner Brothers acquired the rights to use the Teen Wolf title from MGM and with UPN are reportedly will emphasize the fantasy elements and black humor in the new project. UPN has given a script commitment to the project, which will be helmed by veteran TV director Terry Hughes (Friends, 3rd Rock From the Sun) and scribe Ron Milbauer (Idle Hands).

THE DA VINCI CODE: THE DA VINCI CODE has been on the best seller list for quite a while and soon you'll be seeing it on the big screen. The religious-themed thriller is in development at Columbia Pictures and Oscar winners Director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who all won Oscars for A BEAUTIFUL MIND, will make the film. Presently Goldsman is adapting Dan Brown's novel of the same title. Columbia picked up the novel rights in which the main character, Professor Robert Langdon, is investigating the murder of the curator at the Louvre art museum. What he finds is a conspiracy to cover up secret messages embedded in the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, secrets that involve the origins of Christianity.

CATWOMAN: This is the hot film in production now in Vancouver. The upcoming Time magazine will have pictures of Halle Berry in her new CATWOMAN costume. The Hollywood Reporter reports that two more additions have been made to the cast. Actress Alex Borstein (Mad TV, The Lizzie McGuire Movie) will portray Halle Berry's best friend in the Warner Bros. Pictures/Village Roadshow production. Michael Massee (24, Lost Highway) has been cast as a villain. Considering Sharon Stone and Lambert Wilson are the primary antagonists in Catwoman, I assume that means Massee will be a henchman. The film is scheduled to open in summer 2004.

SPIDER-MAN 2: The http://spiderman.sonypictures.com/ website for the upcoming SPIDER-MAN sequel has been updated. You can watch a new Webisode in the 'Daily Bugle' section in which Sam Raimi and James Acheson discuss the changes to Spidey's costume. You can check out a new IPIX of the Daily Bugle in the second film (in the 'Daily Bugle') section. The 'Characters' section has opened within the 'The Movies' section, in which you can find out new details about the movie by dragging the characters' pictures. The 'Fan Central' menu has opened a new 'Ultimate Quiz' and there's also a new wallpaper of Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in the 'Downloads' section.

LORD OF THE RINGS: According to ComingSoon.com a special screening of extended editions of the first two films in Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy will be presented at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and New Line Cinema in January. Also included will be the upcoming final chapter, "The Return of the King," introduced by the director and cast. Running Jan. 10-11, the event marks the first time all three films will be shown together with the director in attendance. Jackson, who co-wrote, directed and produced the trilogy, will introduce the Saturday screenings with members of the cast and participate in a Q&A following the night's final screening of "The Return." On Sunday Film Society program director Richard Pena will host an extended conversation with Jackson, revisiting highlights of his career and exploring the "Rings" trilogy in depth.

THE AKHNATEN ADVENTURE: According to Variety, Steven Spielberg may produce or direct a film adaptation of THE AKHNATEN ADVENTURE, based on Philip Kerr's supernatural children's book of the same name. The Akhnaten Adventure, the first book in the Children of the Lamp series, is Kerr's first attempt at writing for kids and has not yet gone out to U.S. or U.K. publishers. Akhnaten centers on a pair of rich Manhattan twins whose new wisdom teeth hold secret powers understood only by their eccentric Uncle Nimrod, who explains that the adolescents are actually genies. DreamWorks, of which Spielberg is a partner, is negotiating a deal to acquire the film rights to the book.

Jessica Biel told SCI FI Wire that she's been training intensely for her role as the vampire-fighting daughter of Kris Kristofferson's character, Whistler. "I'm like a master archer," Biel said. "I've been working really hard. My character shoots arrows, and she does all these martial arts. She knows boxing. She just kicks people's butts all over the place."

BABYLON 5: As I wandered through the B5 moderated newsgroup last night, I found an update from JMS that everyone will want to read. There is a section about Babylon 5 -- and as usual, JMS doesn't want to say anything before it is time. Check it out though. I guess I'll be spending more time over there for the next couple of weeks.

TARZAN: Next week the much anticipated TARZAN series begins on The WB. SCIFI Wire talked to Travis Fimmel who has won the title role. This Australian Calvin Klein underwear model has some big shoes to fill and it will be interesting to see an updated view of the story -- with the setting in the present-day urban jungle of New York City. Fimmel plays John Clayton Jr., who has been captured in the wilds and taken against his will to New York by his powerful billionaire uncle Richard Clayton (former X-Files star Mitch Pileggi) for reasons as yet unclear. Richard's rival for John's affections is his nefarious newspaper publisher sister, Kathleen (former Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless). Marvel will roll out an agenda that includes producing its own mid-budget films and direct-to-video productions revolving around some of its lesser-known characters, financed primarily by third parties. Next summer SPIDER-MAN 2 arrives and Fox is due to open FANTASTIC FOUR in December 2004.

Marvel can now focus its attention on aggressively building the CAPTAIN AMERICA property across a variety of mediums. This will include feature film and television deals, licensing/merchandising, promotional programs and exciting new publishing initiatives. "Captain America ranks as one of the most recognizable Super Heroes in the world, who can stand quite firmly alongside Marvel's biggest name - Spider-Man," stated Allen Lipson, Marvel Enterprises CEO. "Now, with the legal issue behind us, we can fully explore the deep value that this property brings to the Marvel Universe."

BABYLON 5: SEASON THREE DVD REVIEW: Over at www.cinescape.com you will find a review of the B5 Season Three DVD. Tony Whitt does a good job of pulling all the elements together -- and looking at the entire epic of Babylon 5.

THE BROTHERS GRIMM: Currently filming in Prague, Terry Gilliam's fantasy film THE BROTHERS GRIMM stars Matt Damon, Heath Ledger and Jonathan Pryce. According to Variety, Monica Bellucci (The Matrix Reloaded) has signed to portray the forest's ruler, a woman who has found eternal life, but not eternal beauty. She turns to the forest in order to procure the young virgins whose blood she needs to stay lovely. A Dimension Films-MGM co-production, Brothers Grimm transforms the famed fairy-tale authors into traveling con artists who perform bogus exorcisms and pretend to protect people from enchanted creatures, until they encounter a real magical curse in a haunted forest. Written by Gilliam, Tony Grisoni and Ehren Kruger, the production is expected to continue through mid-November.

Doctor Who Logo DOCTOR WHO: The BBC has given a greenlight to begin work on a new DOCTOR WHO TV series. Writer Russell T. Davies has begun working on several new scripts for the new show, which should air on the network in, at the bare minimum, two years from now. No other details about the new show, storylines or who will play the new Doctor have been announced except that the series will be a family show. Davies commented, "The new series will be fun, exciting, comtemporary and scary. Although I'm only in the early stages of development, I'm aiming to write a full-blooded drama which embraces the DOCTOR WHO heritage, at the same time as introducing the character to a modern audience."

UPDATE FROM JMS

I just ran across this update from JMS over at the B5 moderated newsgroup. I think there is something for everyone here -- including the tidbit about something Babylon 5 on the horizon. I certainly have my fingers crossed that this one does come through.

I know I've gone to ground a bit lately, so I thought I'd pop out with some bits and pieces for folks. (One of the reasons I've gone quiet is that I've undergone a bunch of little surgeries, including some dental work from hell, but the majority of that is done now so I'm well on the mend. I won't go into the surgeries, but suffice to say from now on I shall be known as Dorothy.

(Now let's see who actually falls for that one.)

Meanwhile, I'm in the midst of pitching new shows and picking up projects. There's some interesting possibilities in the works, about which more when they go from possibilities to realities.

In terms of what's coming up...ibooks/Simon and Schuster has put up the solicitation for the first of my novels they're going to be reprinting, starting with Demon Night. You can check out the book at

http://ibooksinc.com/catalog/htm/scifi/straczynski_j_info.htm

And for those who've been wagering on this...I've decided to keep Buddy. The problem isn't so much that I've bonded to him, though I have, as he's utterly imprinted on me as the guy who saved his life and he just goes nuts when I'm gone. (It's a great scam, and he plays his part well.) So Buddy the Miracle Cat (or Buddy TMC as he's known to his rap friends) is here to stay.

The second season of Jeremiah will debut on Showtime on October 10th at 10:00 p.m. (a much better time slot than 10:45) with "Letters from the Other Side, Part One," and I commend you to this season whole-heartedly. I think it's stronger than the previous season. There's more of a clean through-line to the story, less in the way of stand-alones, there are a lot of changes awaiting our characters, and the show looks great. Of the 15 episodes this season I wrote 13, so there's a real sense of continuity there. And this year we're joined by Sean Astin, currently appearing in the Lord of the Rings movies.

(As stated, I've opted not to return if there's a third season, but a) that has nothing to do with the quality of this season, which is terrific, and b) what some people, from the postings I've seen, don't seem to quite get is that this is more the norm than not. Lots of people come on, create a show, get it up and running, and either leave after the first season or the second, sometimes even just launching the show and moving away in the first season. That's the nature of TV. You generally do a couple of years here and a couple of years there. There are exceptions to this of course, situations where creators opt to stick around for the duration, but in most cases people move on. So this ain't a big deal.)

To the many questions that have arisen here of late...yes, as I mentioned before, there is the possibility of something Babylon 5 related on the horizon, but again I don't want anyone getting excited until we know if either one of these two projects is going to actually come to fruition. We should know where this lands in the next few weeks. The only thing I will say is that they're not print projects, so if you were to assume it's for TV or film you wouldn't be too far off...but that neither of them are series. And that's all I'm going to say about them for now.

On the comics front....

The next Supreme Power, issue 3, comes out in a few weeks, either the 1st or the 8th of October. There's a preview at:

http://www.popcultureshock.com/reviews.php?id=2474

The cover for SP 4 is at --

http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/preview.php?image=solicits/marvel112003/big/SUPREME_POWER_4.jpg

-- and there's a funny in-joke on the cover for issue 5 of SP, which you can find at:

http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0309/22/supremepower5.htm

And no, I didn't know about this until I saw it on the net.

The latest Spidey, part two of the three-part arc leading to issue 500, hit the stores on Wednesday last, and the coming finale is 38 pages of story with a guest series of pencils by John Romita Sr. as well as the inimitable JR JR.

(Having gotten a bit ahead on Spidey and well ahead on SP -- #2 just came out and I'm about to turn in the script for #7 -- I'm in talks with Marvel to do a new title for them, so we'll see how that turns out.)

I *think* that's it for now...as always, I'll probably remember something else ten seconds after sending this, but I'm pretty sure that's all the news that's fit to print.

GAG REEL

As with the other DVDs, there is a gag reel portion on the Season Three DVD as well. Ranger Mike sent along instructions on how to get there.

Babylon 5 Season 3 DVD Blooper Reel

The Season 3 "Gag Reel" is for real! It is actually an Easter Egg (a hidden component in the DVD) and is about three minutes long. There is a brief musical introduction and the segment mostly contains dialog goofs and other blunders the cast had.

To get to the Gag Reel, put in disc #6 and from the main menu:

* Select "The Universe Of Babylon 5"
* Select "Data Files"
* Cursor down Between the middle menu option "The Battle For Babylon 5" and the bottom menu option "The Universe Of Babylon 5". You should get a highlighted "5" logo to appear
* Press select to view the Gag Reel.

PROBLEMS WITH BABYLON 5 DVDS

Ranger Bruce from Uncomyn Gifts sent along the following note regarding the Season Two DVD. It made me wonder if anyone else has encountered any problems or seen any changes that they would like to raise with other Babylon 5 fans. I have received a couple of notes, but so far there hadn't been anything major to mention. See if you have the same problem Bruce has.

Have you had any of your readers mention a production error in the B5 S2 DVD set? I have not had a chance to verify it, but one of my customers says that Knives is on the disks twice - at the end of Disk 4 and the beginning of Disk 5. And the booklet is incorrect from disk 4 on. It shows that there is only 1 episode on disk 6, but there are actually 2. Someone needs to check to see if any episodes are missing from the DVDs... Is there anyone that should be notified over at Warner, or perhaps JMS?

If you have the problem Bruce mentions above -- or you have any others, drop me a note and I'll compile them to share with all of our readers.

JEREMIAH

Season 2 of Jeremiah SEASON TWO TWO-PART OPENER- OCTOBER 10 at 10PM

Showtime has released additional images from the upcoming "Strange Attraction" episode of Jeremiah and you can see them at http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0309/30/index.htm.

"Strange Attraction" is scheduled to air on Friday, Oct. 24. The second season of Jeremiah begins on Friday, Oct. 10.

Over at http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0309/26/index.htm you can see the photos released by Showtime of the second season of JEREMIAH. There are two cast photos and seven episodic photos. The cast photos show Luke Perry as Jeremiah, Malcolm-Jamal Warner as Kurdy and new cast member Sean Astin as Mister Smith. The episodic photos are from the second episode, "Letters From the Other Side, Pt. 2," which is scheduled to premiere on Friday, Oct. 2.

Here is a description of what awaits in the second season:
"While Valhalla Sector prepares to exchange Markus (Peter Stebbings) and Erin (Indrid Kavelaars), Lee Chen (Byron Lawson) and Kurdy convince a group of dubious Thunder Mountain volunteers to undertake a mission to attack Valhalla Sector. Although they still do not trust Lee, the group has faith in Kurdy and agrees to the mission.

"The leaders take Devon (Robert Wisden) prisoner and place him in the cell next to Jeremiah. Father and son know the leaders are exchanging Markus and Erin but they cannot imagine what Thunder Mountain is offering in exchange -- except that it must provide a key to the Big Death.

"When the exchange takes place, Markus sees Meaghan (Suzy Joachim) but is unable to stop her from carrying out her part in the drama. Meanwhile, the Thunder Mountain forces launch their attack on Valhalla Sector. Mister Smith makes his way to the battle just in time to save Kurdy from a sleeper agent within the attack team as the Valhalla Sector leaders return to the base and lock it down with Jeremiah, Devon, Libby (Joanne Kelly) and Meaghan inside. As the Big Death spreads through Valhalla Sector, Libby's quick thinking provides a way for Jeremiah and Devon to try attempt survival amidst the turmoil."

The episode was written by J. Michael Straczynski and directed by Martin Wood.

Ranger Monica has been capturing promo clips from Showtime for JEREMIAH and has them listed at http://abyss.hubbe.net/jeremiah/gallery/clips_s2.html. JEREMIAH AND JMS FOR SEASON THREE
Here is a note from the B5 moderated newsgroup related to JMS continuing with JEREMIAH into season three:

"There was a lot in that article on the Pulse that was really badly reported, things were misphrased, two different sentences were put into one, sections are wholly incomprehensible...it's just a train wreck of a piece.

However, even though the article totally misstated the sentence so it didn't make any sense, the last phrase is correct, in that I have zero desire to return to a third season of Jeremiah. Showtime was great, no mistake, but MGM has overall been the most heinous, difficult and intrusive studio I've ever worked for. I've worked for, and had great relations with, Viacom, Universal, Warner Bros., and a bunch more. But I will never, ever, work for the present administration at MGM.

I didn't know why so many other writers had a problem there and never wanted to go back. Now I do."

In another posting, he mentioned:

I read on the net -- was never informed by MGM -- that Jeremiah will be coming to DVD in January or February of next year, and season 2 begins September 19th on Showtime.

** Follow this link to The Pulse article referred to above.

There are a couple of places where you can find information on JEREMIAH. Monica has a very up-to-date site at http://abyss.hubbe.net/jeremiah/. She has a newsletter that you can sign up for as well so that information comes into your mailbox on a regular basis. The "official" website is located at http://sho.com/jeremiah/. It isn't terribly timely, but it does have background about the show if you need it.

DISCUSSION TOPIC

Here's an oldie but goodie! What is your most memorable moment from Babylon 5. I know this is hard, so let's break it up into seasons -- starting with Season One.

Send in your most memorable moments to sgbruckner@aol.com and I'll post them on the Discussion Page for everyone to share.

KEEPING UP WITH CAST AND CREW

TIM CHOATE: Tim has been spotted in what may be a recurring role on the new CBS series COLD CASES. He portrays one of the homicide detectives in the squad room.

STEPHEN AUSTIN: I got a wonderful note from the Pa'Ka'Ma Ambassador, saying that he will be appearing at UNITED FAN CON, November 7-9 at the Sheraton Hotel, Springfield, Mass. (For more information on the convention, go to http://www.unitedfancon.com/. In addition, he's been quite busy with a number of projects. He has has completed work on two CDs and is putting the finishing touches on a DVD/Video -- a compelation of several of his stand-up comedy performances. Another CD is a work done by an ensemble group of comedians including Stephen, Vic Dunlop and The Unknown Comic titiled "Lunatics and Losers" a lampoon about our war on terrorism.

Ill Met By Moonlight JASON CARTER: Jason will appear this season of SHE SPIES as an assassin named Morgan Porter. The episode was to begin shooting 09/10/03. Jason's new audio book, ILL MET BY MOONLIGHT (written by Sarah Hoyt) began shipping on October 1.

ROBIN ATKIN DOWNES: Robin (Byron from Babylon 5) has been quite busy since the end of the series. His latest project, the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA video game where he provides the voice for Ensign William "Husker" Adama . To read more, go to www.galactica2003.net/videogame/downes081603.htm.

PETER WOODWARD: Ranger Spiffy reports: The History Channel UK website has a simple on-line game of Peter Woodward's Conquest. The setup is hilarious! Peter's character challenges the player to a duel involving crossbows, longbows, and battle axes. The design is not morbid--it is cartoonish and the quips from Peter's character are very comical. I think that the game would appeal to anyone who likes history and especially the Conquest tv show. (It may also be a good stress-reliever!) Go to http://www.thehistorychannel.co.uk/index_continue.htm, select games and go to CONQUEST.

GARY COLE: A very familiar face will be showing up on THE WEST WING in the fall. Captain Gideon from CRUSADE, Gary Cole, will be sworn in as the Vice President of the United States. Cole will play Colorado congressman Robert "Bingo Bob" Russell starting with the show's third episode this fall. The character is described by Variety as having a few unconventional ideas.

RANGER SIGHTING

Ranger John reports that Bruce Boxleitner made a brief appearance on SHE SPIES this weekend. It was the Second Season premiere episode "Rane of Terror".

The graphics are awesome and it will add a certain measure of class to any desktop. Don't miss the preview feature. You can see what graphics have been included for your viewing pleasure. Thanks WB.

ISBN: 1-904577-11-3

From the review written at http://www.scifi.com/sfw/current/games.html B5 fans might want to pick up this game whether they actually play it or not. Based on the first season of the series, the "fact book" portion of the book includes an overview and maps of Babylon 5 and an episode-by-episode breakdown of the first season.

TRADING CARD HELP

Ranger Tia sent along this note to share with B5 card collectors:

Don't know if you've heard of my card program yet or not, but I thought the other B5 card collectors might like to try it out. With having almost all of the B5 trading cards and CCG cards available and no program to keep track of them withm, I started writing my own. Here's the website for it. Go half way down and click on the small screen shot for a full size screen shot. I have the pic of Pat Tallman's card from the Profiles card set feautured in the shot.

Oh, and I also have a lot of the card lists already saved as files so people won't need to type in all the card names. Being written by a B5 fan, ALL the card lists have already been made and are downloadable. :)

iBOOKS PUBLISHES JMS' PROSE WORK

Press Release
He raised the bar for epic science-fiction storytelling on television with his syndicated series Babylon 5, then followed it by elevating the way in which superhero tales are told with his critically acclaimed scripts for Marvel's The Amazing Spider-Man and Supreme Power. Now, New York-based publishing house ibooks, inc. is pleased to announce that it has solidified plans with Hugo, Eisner and Emmy award-winning writer and producer J. Michael Straczynski to re-introduce his growing number of fans to some of his earlier works.

October 2003 will see the release of Demon Night, Straczynski's first novel. "What made Demon Night work", says Straczynski in a new afterword written specifically for this edition, "and the reason that it has now been picked up for republication by ibooks, is that I wrote it for myself, out of a love of the form, the genre, and a desire to be entertained by a story told about characters who mattered to me."

Straczynski Unplugged Following Demon Night will be Straczynski Unplugged, to be released in April 2004, a collection of published and all-new short stories, including a number of dark tales adapted from his episodes written for the TV series The New Twilight Zone. At press time, release dates for the remaining titles, the horror novel Othersyde and the supernatural-mystery Tribulations, had not been determined.

Demon Night is not ibooks' first encounter with the writer, however: His best-selling comic book series J. Michael Straczynski's Rising Stars" published by Top Cow Comics was novelized for ibooks in two volumes by author Arthur Byron Cover. Both volumes are still available from book retailers, with Book 3 to follow after the series reaches its conclusion.

One doesn't have to look far to see just how popular a writer Straczynski has become in recent years. At this year's Comic-Con International: San Diego, Marvel Comics announced that pre-orders for his upcoming Mature Readers series Supreme Power passed the 100,000-copy marks a new record for retailer orders on a Mature Readers title. He has worked as writer/producer for such series as Murder, She Wrote, Jeremiah and Walker, Texas Ranger, and he has published over 500 articles and numerous short stories for such publications as the Los Angeles Times, Time Inc, Amazing Stories, Penthouse, Writer's Digest, Pulphouse, The Los Angeles Herald Examiner and Twilight Zone Magazine.

Scheduled for release in October 2003, Demon Night is a trade paperback-sized novel retailing for $11.95, available now for ordering through comic shops, book stores, and on-line book retailers (ISBN 0-7434-7522-4).

AMAZING SPIDERMAN #500

Amazing Spiderman #500 Marvel Comics on Wednesday released a double-page spread from Amazing Spider-Man #500 by John Romita Jr. and Scott Hanna. Here's how Marvel describes the book, which is written by J. Michael Straczynski and features a cover by J. Scott Campbell:

"Amazing Spider-Man #500 finds Peter Parker spending his birthday as Spider-Man battling an inter-dimensional threat that descends on Manhattan. Fighting alongside Spidey is a who's who of Marvel Universe guest-stars, including the Fantastic Four, Thor, Iron Man, the X-Men's Cyclops and Dr. Strange. The battle culminates in a trip through time, where Peter/Spider-Man meets ALL of his greatest adversaries like Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin, and has one very special and unexpected reunion drawn by none other than John Romita Sr. himself."

Supreme Power #2 SUPREME POWER #2
Written by J. Michael Straczynski, pencils and cover by Gary Frank.
I n a world with no heroes, what happens when powerful superhumans emerge? And now that the government knows that superbeings exist, what lengths will they go to use them for their own purposes? J. Michael Straczynski tells a hard-edged, mature and deeply personal saga that pushes the limits of the comics form into new, uncharted territory.
32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Sept. 10.

RISING STARS

Here is an update from Comics Continuum:

Top Cow's Rising Stars: Untouchables, a five-issue series originally solicited bi- monthly to start in September, is being resolicited as a monthly title to start in April 2004.

"Rather than put out issue #1 now and have fans wait months until the next issue is ready, we figured we’d wait, give Brent plenty of time to do several issues, and resolicit it so fans can follow it on a monthly basis," said editor Renae Geerlings.

Written by Fiona Avery with story edits by J. Michael Stracynzski, Rising Stars: Untouchables tells the story of Laurel Darkhaven, one of the 113 Specials from Peterson, Illinois.

While her telekinetic power seemed unimpressive while she grew up, the CIA recruited her with the promise of serving her country. Instead, she was forced into wetwork operations and turned against the Agency to find the employer responsible for her missions. The series chronicles her life from high school graduation to the moment she dies in Poet’s arms.

MAIL FOR CAST AND CREW

Here's a recent note from JMS on the subject:

Just an FYI to those who've been using the Ventura Blvd. mail drop for fan mail to actors....

As mentioned before, we're phasing out the forwarding of fan mail because we a) don't have the resources, complicated by b) the actors have scattered to the four winds, and it makes it very difficult to get everything to everybody in a timely fashion.

So, having provided prior notice...fan mail to actors coming to the Ventura Blvd. mail drop will be sent back. Mail to actors should be sent via their official fan clubs. I will still be taking mail there, since it's my mailbox, but that's it.

Just so's y'all know and save a few bucks on postage and returns.
