STARGATE SG-1: STARGATE SG-1 is the highest-rated original series on SCI FI Channel. Next week, the series hits a milestone -- its 150th episode. The milestone episode is the conclusion of a two-part episode, "Heroes." Part 1 premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Feb. 13; Part 2 debuts at the same time on Feb. 20. You will not want to miss either of these episodes. They will be very special.

ALIEN LOCKDOWN: Set to premiere on Saturday, February 7 at 9:00pm ET, director Tim Cox's ALIEN LOCKDOWN is a story that puts a contemporary spin on the classic SF genre themes of the 1950s. "In the 1950s, anything nuclear would react to a species or a substance and turn that species or substance into a threat. Nuclear power at the time was something we were deathly afraid of, and we didn't quite know what to do with it. Now, in the 21st century, genetic engineering is our nuclear fear factor," Cox said in a recent interview. In ALIEN LOCKDOWN, John Savage (Dark Angel) plays a geneticist, Dr. Woodman, who takes alien DNA and uses it to create a weapon that can wipe out humanity. Cox said, "He feels that wiping out humanity is just the next evolutionary step for the planet." Woodman's experiment goes awry and the alien creature begins a murderous rampage. Woodman and his assistant (James Marshall) lock down their secret government lab and call in covert military forces, commanded by Rita Talon (Michelle Goh), to find and kill the alien.

THE DEAD ZONE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sarah Wynter (24) has signed on for a six-episode arc of USA Networks' THE DEAD ZONE starring Anthony Michael Hall. The Aussie plays a therapist whose sister disappears, and Hall's character becomes the prime suspect. Production began on the third season of the series this week and launches in June. Star Anthony Michael Hall is directing one of the upcoming episodes.

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN: Variety reports that Universal Pictures is mounting a remake of the 1935 classic horror film BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, which starred Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester. According to the trade, Uni has hired the AMERICAN SPLENDOR team of Shari Spring Berman and Robert Pulcini to write and direct the film. They will reportedly be tasked with "re-imagining" the original picture, starting from scratch to craft a "character-driven horror film more akin to Rosemary's Baby." Their story will be set in modern-day New York City and center around a college coed who is haunted by someone else's memories. She soon begins to discover that she once died and was unnaturally resurrected.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: SCI FI Channel has officially confirmed the network picked up the options for the cast of its original miniseries BATTLESTAR GALACTICA before they expired on Jan. 31. The pickup did not signal any official decision about the fate of a possible Galactica series, despite rumors on the Internet to the contrary. SCI FI said that no decision has come from the network on whether a series will be given the green light. The BATTLESTAR GALACTICA miniseries premiered in December and was one of the channel's highest-rated programs. Based on the original 1970s TV show, it starred Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Jamie Bamber, Katee Sackhoff, Tricia Helfer and James Callis.

X-MEN: Patrick Stewart (Professor Xavier from X-MEN) told the Bradenton (Fla.) Herald newspaper that he expects a third installment in the hit franchise next year. "X-Men 3 should come out in 2005," Stewart told the newspaper. Stewart also told an audience at the Sarasota Film Festival that he hoped the franchise continues for several more films. What about his involvement in Star Trek? "I think Star Trek is over," Stewart told the audience. "And that ain't such a bad thing. The last movie [Star Trek Nemesis] didn't do well. ... But I'm sure all you saw it."

ARTHUR C. CLARKE AWARDS: The 2004 shortlist for the Arthur C. Clarke Award were announced yesterday. Established with a grant from the legendary author for whom it is named, the award is designed to encourage science fiction in Britain. The award is administered by the British Science Fiction Association, the Science Fiction Foundation and the Science Museum. The award consists of an inscribed plaque in the form of a bookend and a prize that matches the year. In 2004, it will be £2,004 ($3,681). A list of the nominees follows:
•Coalescent by Stephen Baxter
•Darwin's Children by Greg Bear
•Pattern Recognition by William Gibson
•Midnight Lamp by Gwyneth Jones
•Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson
•Maul by Tricia Sullivan

MUTANT X: Over at Cinescape.com, indications are that John Shea will be returning full time to MUTANT X for season four. Shea told the reporter of the item that the show will be returning next year and that there are plans for his character to return full-time next season. Official word about a fourth season for MUTANT X was just announced two weeks ago. News over at Comics Continuum indicated that Shea will be returning for a few episodes this year before the season finale.

MARVEL-PIXAR: With the split between Disney and Pixar, a new name has popped up in conjunction with the animator. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Enterprises has met with Pixar Animation Studios and nearly every producer about translating more of its comic book characters into filmed entertainment, Marvel vice chairman Peter Cuneo said Tuesday. Cuneo, speaking at Emerald Asset Management's 11th annual Groundhog Day Investment Forum in Philadelphia, said Marvel and Pixar have something in common in terms of their track records in film. "Pixar has an incredible record," Cuneo said, referring to the company's five blockbusters in five tries in a partnership with the Walt Disney Co. that seems to be coming to an end after the two sides broke off renewal negotiations last week.

DREAMWORKS: The New York Post reported Tuesday that DreamWorks is considering a possible spin-off of its animation unit, either as an outright sale or an initial public offering. The unit is the particular province of DreamWorks principal Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is widely credited with reviving Disney's animation department in the 1980s and who at DreamWorks has successfully mounted a challenge to Disney's animated fare with such films as ANTZ and SHREK.

THE WEATHERMAN: With filming set to start on February 23, Paramount Pictures has added Michael Caine to Chicago-based drama opposite Nicolas Cage and Hope Davis. Directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Escape Artists, Caine will portray a Pultizer Prize-winning author who's the father of Cage's character, a successful TV weathercaster who's about to leave Chicago for Gotham.

BATMAN: According to Comics Continuum, Adam West will be providing the voice of the mayor of Gotham City in THE BATMAN, a new animated series from Warner Bros. Animation being targeted for a fall launch. The show is expected to air both on Cartoon Network and Kids' WB!, with official details to be announced soon. THE BATMAN will feature a younger version of the character than currently shown in Justice League. BATMAN will be voiced by Rino Romano, whose credits include the lead role in Spider-Man Unlimited.

SEED OF CHUCKY: Rumors had arisen that Brad Dourif may not be back to provide the voice of the world's most favorite maniacle possessed doll, CHUCKY, in the 5th movie, CHILD'S PLAY. Dourif, more recently known for his work as 'Wormtongue' in THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS, however, will return. CHILD'S PLAY writer Don Mancini shot down the rumor in flames. "Brad is signed, sealed, and thrilled to death. I had lunch with him on Saturday."

Tuesday, February 3:
HARRY POTTER: The paperback edition of HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX has been announced. Scholastic Corporation will release the hefty 896 page book on August 10 at a price of $9.99. Two million copies of the paperback edition will be printed at first. If you live in the United Kingdom, you'll have the opportunity to purchse THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX a month ahead of the U.S. The UK publisher, Bloomsbury, will release their paperback edition to bookstores on July 10. J.K. Rowling continues to write the as-yet untitled sixth HARRY POTTER book, with no anticipated release date scheduled. Third movie, HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, will be out on June 4.

TROY: There are a couple of good trailers for the upcoming Wolfgang Peterson epic TROY at http://troymovie.warnerbros.com/index_flash.html. This film opens in May with Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean, Eric Bana and Peter O'Toole.

STARSHIP TROOPERS 2: While this project is headed directly to video, there is a website dedicated to it at www.STARSHIP TROOPERS 2.NET . You'll find a brief trailer, information about the cast and crew. No word on a release date as yet. Richard Burgi from SENTINEL stars.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Sci Fi Channel picked up the options last week on its top cast members, which include Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell and Katee Sackhoff. Sources said the cable network is aiming to bow GALACTICA as a full-fledged series as early as fourth-quarter 2004. While there was no comment from Sci Fi, all indications are that at least six episodes of GALACTICA will be shot in Vancouver as soon as April. It will likely be one of cable's more expensive drama series, with production estimates as high as $1.5 million per episode. The four-hour GALACTICA miniseries averaged 4.2 million viewers last year, making it the third-highest-rated multinight program Sci Fi has aired.

SKY CAPTAIN: SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW, an upcoming live-action/computer-generated film from producer Jon Avnet takes its cues from old movie serials. "The serials of the past were an enormous influence," Avnet said of the film, directed by newcomer Kerry Conran. "This is sort of Buck Rogers meets Raiders of the Lost Ark. The serials had cliffhangers, and that's what this is." In SKY CAPTAIN, Gwyneth Paltrow plays newspaper reporter Polly Perkins, who hooks up with Jude Law's aviator hero in 1930s New York to uncover the mystery behind an invasion of giant robots, a squadron of destructive flying wings and the disappearance of the world's most prominent scientists. Paltrow, Law and co-star Angelina Jolie shot their scenes against green screens in London last year. Now, in a nondescript light-industrial building in Van Nuys, Calif., a platoon of computer animators sitting at Apple computers is layering in the movie's sets, backgrounds, vehicles, creatures and action sequences in painstaking 3-D animation. SKY CAPTAIN opens June 11.

SHAZAM: The Hollywood Reporter reports that the screenwriting team of Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow have been tapped by New Line Cinema to adapt the DC Comics series SHAZAM! for the movies. Shazam! is the story of Billy Batson, a boy who becomes Captain Marvel, the world's mightiest mortal, when he says the magic word "Shazam!" The DC comic ran in the 1970s and was actually a revival of the 1940s Fawcett Comics strip. SHAZAM! is being executive produced by Batman executive producer Michael Uslan and is being overseen at New Line by production executives Chris Godsick and Mark Kaufman.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Screen Gems' urban youth flick YOU GOT SERVED topped the box office this weekend, taking in an estimated $16 million in its first week of release. Marques Houston and Omari Grandberry star as a pair of pals who are out to try and win a street dance competition so they can open their own recording studio. ALONG CAME POLLY maintained its perch at number two. After two weeks the Ben Stiller/Jennifer Aniston vehicle has netted a nice $66.7 M. Performing beyond expectations, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT has now cleared $30 M for New Line Cinema in just two weeks. THE RETURN OF THE KING continues to pull in revenue, marching towards $350 M domestically. Paramount's THE PERFECT SCORE opened in fifth spot with a so-so $5 M gross, but Warner Bros. new movie, THE BIG BOUNCE, failed to make a bounce at the box office. In its opening weekend this Owen Wilson comedy crime caper only took in $3.3 M. Next week: Kurt Russell coaches the U.S. Mens hockey team to gold in MIRACLE, Ice Cube gets back to cutting locks in BARBERSHOP 2, and a trio of pre-teens plot to make a bank heist in CATCH THAT KID -- and there'll be no football on the tube. Here are the estimated box office receipts from January 30 through to February 1:
1. YOU GOT SERVED $16,000,000 $16,000,000
2. ALONG CAME POLLY $10,072,000 $66,764,000
3. THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT $9,950,000 $32,429,000

SUPER BOWL COMMERCIALS: If you missed all the marvelous trailers for upcoming movies shown during the Super Bowl yesterday, you can catch them all over at http://www.darkhorizons.com/trailers.php.

TIGER CRUISE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Disney Channel has greenlighted an original film set against the backdrop of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Production has begun on TIGER CRUISE, a fictional spin on a real-life incident involving a naval carrier called into full combat alert while children and other civilians were on board. CRUISE will be produced by First Street Films and Stu Segall Prods. with Bill Pullman and Hayden Panettiere in starring roles.

DARK SHADOWS: The Hollywood Reporter indicates that the WB Network has ordered "Dark Shadows," a drama pilot based on the classic ABC soap from producers John Wells and Dan Curtis.

Sunday, February 1:
NEW BABYLON 5 PROJECT: Here's the latest from JMS on the project he mentioned in November:
It's taken longer than hoped for to be able to talk about this, because it's taken longer than hoped for to go through all the machinations of the deal. Depending on the nature of a given deal, it can take a few weeks to a couple, three months to actually cut the deal and finalize the language in terms everybody can agree with. We only literally finished the deal last week.

Writing on B5:TMoS is complete, and as soon as the powers that be sign off on everything, it can be turned in and we can start moving. At that point, I can say more about this.

Figure another couple of weeks.

jms

SPECULATION: Some of the guesses people have sent in (B5: TMoS) are wonderful. Let's hope that some of the better ones are accurate.

STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE: For quite some time, there have been rumors floating around about changes ahead for STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE. Those rumors are getting stronger and with the UPN announcement that the series would move to the 9:00 timeslot on Wednesday, one wonders what other changes are in store. Cinescape Online is reporting a rumor that an overhaul may be in the works. Citing an anonymous source, the site reported that Paramount Television Productions president Garry Hart may make changes to the show's production staff after February sweeps, including the possible replacement of longtime executive producer Rick Berman. We'll all have to wait and see on that one.

Battlestar Galactica Viper BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: With time running out on the options for the actors involved in SCIFI Channel's BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, word has been coming out about a greenlight for additional episodes. Ronald Moore indicated on his website that he expected word to come and he has been writing furiously so that he would have scripts ready. Galactica 2003.net reports that GALACTICA actor Aaron Douglas has stated that the network has ordered 13 episodes of the new series. Douglas played Chief Petty Officer Tyrol in the mini-series, and according to his post, his contract calls for his character to appear in all 13 episodes. Douglas said in his post that he only learned of the go-ahead late in the afternoon of January 30 with literally minutes left until the options holding the actors in place ran out. Douglas also added that he heard from actress Grace Park, who played Boomer in the mini-series, also stating that her option had been exercised and the series was happening. Nothing official from the SCIFI Channel.

ANGEL: At The WB's recent Winter Press Tour, ANGEL creator and executive producer Joss Whedon, said this Wednesday's 100th episode will have the sense of a milestone. In "You're Welcome," Charisma Carpenter returns as Cordelia, who mysteriously awakens from her coma and is shocked and unhappy to discover that Angel and the group are no longer fighting Wolfram & Hart, they're running it. When she realizes that Angel has lost his conviction to be a hero, she gives him the information and support he needs to get back on track. "That's very much kind of an opportunity for us to sum up, sort of 'Good Lord, we've been doing this for a while' without being sly and post-modern about it and winking at the audience."

MUTANT X: John Shea, who portrayed Adam Kane during the first two seasons of MUTANT X, is expected to return to the series during the February sweeps. Kane was thought to have died in last season's cliffhanger but has been listed as a special guest star for the third season. Shea is expected to appear in approximately four episodes.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY: If you are a football fan, today is your day! Hopefully the game will be exciting and the best part won't be the commercials.
If you aren't a football fan, there are a number of marathons on today. A&E has MURDER SHE WROTE, FoodNetwork has Paula Dean (I love her) and there are others. It is a great day to pull out a good book or VHS or DVDs of your favorite shows. Would have been a terrific day for a BABYLON 5 marathon at SCIFI -- or even STARGATE. Oh well. Have a great Sunday.

DVD BUYING TIPS

I picked up the Season 5 DVD of STARGATE SG-1 at CostCo yesterday. It was $39.99 and they had all of the previous seasons there as well. I snapped up the last Season 5! I love that place.

Ranger Brian sent along a terrific tip for purchasing any DVDs. Go to http://www.dvdpricesearch.net/. You can do a search on any title and it will find the lowest price for you. It includes mailing information as well. Thanks Brian!

Ranger Frank in Seattle indicates that again, CostCo is saving Babylon 5 fans money!
Costco stores have a limited time sale on the Babylon 5 DVD sets. I went into a Costco in the Seattle area today, and they have seasons 1, 2 and 3 for $59.99 each -- about $25 less than Amazon.com, and $40 less than list price, as I recall. Season 4 is $64.99. But the deal is that if you buy Season 4, you get $20 off any one of the other seasons.

Thanks Frank for passing along the info. Other folks should check out CostCo for Babylon 5 and other DVDs. They usually have very competitive prices.

Burbank, Calif., October 14, 2003 - The future begins - or ends - here and now. Here is the huge space station Babylon 5. Now is the fateful year 2261. That time has come on January 6, 2003 with the complete 22-episode fourth season adventure of the acclaimed Babylon 5 sci-fi series from Warner Home Video (WHV). Presented on a must-have six-disc collector's set, Babylon 5: The Complete Fourth Season is priced to own at $99.98 SRP. Orders are due December 9.

"The Babylon 5 series has consistently been one of Warner Home Video's most in-demand DVD collections, proving the loyalty and strong fan base for this acclaimed sci-fi series," said Jeff Baker, Vice President, Non-Theatrical Franchise Marketing. "The TV to DVD trend has been very strong in the marketplace and WHV plans to continue releasing fan-favorite series throughout the year."

Babylon 5 has won two Emmy Awards for Groundbreaking Visual Effects and Makeup as well as the 1998 Science Fiction Writers of America Ray Bradbury Award. It also earned the 1999 Saturn Award for Best Genre Cable/Syndicated Series from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. Currently, Babylon 5 continues to be seen by legions of fans with episodes syndicated on the Sci-Fi Channel.

SEASON FIVE OF BABYLON 5 - APRIL 13, 2004

Over at TV Shows on DVD, you'll find a notice that Season 5 of Babylon 5 will be available on April 13. Nothing official from the WB yet. Here is the information available so far:

Description:
From the beginning, both were running out of time. The space station that was the last, best hope for peace was sooner or later certain to be eclipsed by new political coalitions and technical advances. And John Sheridan, who guided the massive freeport through its most tumultuous days, knew that his own fate had been inalterably prophesied.

Now both storylines converge in a 22-episode final season (with dazzling Exclusive DVD Extras!) whose events also include Sheridan's attempts to wage peace for the Interstellar Alliance, the tragic fate of the telepaths and the ultimate fireball destruction of the outmoded station after it is declared to be a spaceway navigational hazard. You're cleared for final approach...to Babylon 5.

CONVENTION HIGHLIGHTS

2BeContinued Guests Ranger Brian had a blast with Rick, Jason and Jeffrey at the 2BeContinued Convention last week in Indiana. He sent along a picture for everyone to enjoy. Thanks Brian.

If you would like to share your convention experience with your other Zocalo readers, send along a convention report. I will gladly post it for all to read. Got pictures? I'll post those as well.

ZOCALO TRADING POST

Do you have extra copies of B5, Amazing Spiderman, Midnight Nation or Rising Stars comics you'd like to trade? How about those extra trading cards or B5 magazines? There are a lot of fans looking for these items -- and the Trading Post can help you buy or sell them. To see what's available, just use this link to the Trading Post. To have items included in The Trading Post, send a note to The Zocalo. Please put Trading Post in the subject line.

PEN PALS

If you are looking for someone to talk about Babylon 5 and Crusade with, the Pen Pal section is for you! Check it out! Drop a note to someone who is feeling B5 withdrawal -- BIG TIME!

People thought a Pen Pal page was a good idea. If you would like to meet people who you could chat with or share your opinions of the show with, send along your e-mail or snail-mail address The Zocalo. It will be incorporated on the new Pen Page Page.

MAIL FOR CAST AND CREW

Here's a recent note from JMS on the subject:

Just an FYI to those who've been using the Ventura Blvd. mail drop for fan mail to actors....

As mentioned before, we're phasing out the forwarding of fan mail because we a) don't have the resources, complicated by b) the actors have scattered to the four winds, and it makes it very difficult to get everything to everybody in a timely fashion.

So, having provided prior notice...fan mail to actors coming to the Ventura Blvd. mail drop will be sent back. Mail to actors should be sent via their official fan clubs. I will still be taking mail there, since it's my mailbox, but that's it.

Just so's y'all know and save a few bucks on postage and returns.
