SATURDAY, JULY 26, 2008

All over the internet this morning, there are reports from the various panel discussions at Comic-Con International taking place in San Diego, California this weekend. The program schedule can be found at http://www.comic-con.org/. Everyone here is interested in JMS' panel from Thursday and the other from today. I haven't seen any reports from the Thursday panel as yet -- hopefully there will be something on-line tomorrow about both. The San Diego Comic-Con has become an absolutely HUGE event with the advent of comic book characters going to the big screen. There are tons of reports all over the internet -- along with pictures. Some of the best can be found at:

Spirit THE SPIRIT
Yesterday, writer/director Frank Miller showed off new footage from his upcoming comic-book adaptation THE SPIRIT, including clips of the title hero (Gabriel Macht) \ with a couple of his signature women and in a fight scene, at San Diego Comic-Con. The new footage featured the film's by-now-familiar stylized, saturated look, with blacks, white, grays and a flash of red, though the movie is actually shot in color. The clips featured Scarlett Johannsson's character, Silken Floss; Eva Mendes' Sand Saref; the villainous Octopus, played by Samuel L. Jackson; and Sarah Paulson's Ellen Dolan. One clip--an underwater scene--highlighted Miller's filmmaking technique, a la Zack Snyder's 300 and Robert Rodriguez's SIN CITY. "We found a phantom camera that was able to shoot slower than death, and Eva Mendes was one of the first to work with it," Miller told the audience. "All the scenes you are about to see were shot dry, so there wasn't an ounce of water in them. And Eva was given the instruction to act like the Flash. So everything she did that would take a minute was going by in a couple seconds. That's the remarkable thing about her performance." In the clip, Eva's character is in the water and falls under attack from the Octopus, dives under the water, swims toward a companion and tries to retrieve two boxes on the bottom before being rescued by the Spirit. In another clip, the Spirit gets romantic with Dolan in a hospital. "You're in love with every woman you meet, Mr. Spirit," she says. "You say lovely things to all of us, and you mean every word, every word you mean every time. But we don't even know your real name." In a final clip, the Spirit and the Octopus fight in the mud and the rain. The fight ends with the Octopus smashing the Spirit over the head with a toilet, then laughing as he grabs him: "Come on! Toilets are always funny." THE SPIRIT opens Christmas Day. For more information and to see the clips from Comic-Con, go to http://www.mycityscreams.com/.

WOLFMAN
Surprise guests Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro, stars of its upcoming THE WOLFMAN, were introduced by Universal Pictures to a panel at San Diego Comic-Con and they unveiled the first footage from the movie, a remake of the classic Universal monster movie. The footage features a gruesome image of an eviscerated man, the unhappy victim of some kind of vicious creature. It's a flashback by a man whose father found a body and who melted down silver spoons to make bullets. The footage then features Anthony Hopkins in a stately home, who talks to Del Toro's character: "Lo and behold, the prodigal son returns." Footage cuts to Emily Blunt kissing Del Toro; later, she is seen hiding behind a tree in the forest from some kind of creature. Subsequent scenes show Del Toro in a windowless room, where he discovers a mauled body; a massacre at a fancy-dress ball, women lying dead on the floor with blood on their clothes; a fire in a huge mansion; and a man running through a forest, falling into a trap and being attacked by the wolfman. Hopkins then finds Del Toro in the forest, looking dazed, clothes tattered, covered with blood. "You've done terrible things," he tells Del Toro. Then the film cuts to Del Toro in a rage, bound with leather straps: "I will kill all of you!" and Del Toro, lying on the floor, whispering to Blunt: "I am what they say. I'm a monster."
Over at http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20185191,00.html, you can see a picture of Benicio Del Toro in make-up that took some 3 hours to put on. THE WOLFMAN is slated for release in April 2009.

Watchmen WATCHMEN
Zack Snyder, director of the upcoming Watchmen movie, screened new footage from the adaptation of the classic graphic novel--including extended versions of scenes in the current teaser trailer--to fans at Comic-Con yesterday. The new footage included the first complete shots of Rorschach's (Jackie Earle Haley) morphing mask, the first clear glimpses of the interior of the Comedian's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) apartment and weapons closet, an image of Sally Jupiter/Silk Spectre (Carla Gugino) and Edward Blake/the Comedian at the 1940s meeting of the Minutemen, an extended version of Dr. Manhattan's (Billy Crudup) attack in Vietnam, old Richard Nixon and an extended version of the scene in which the Comedian is hurled out his window--the camera tracks him in slow motion going through the glass, out and down toward the street as his blood-spattered smiley-face button twirls into the foreground. The trailer also includes an extended version of the sequence in which Laurie Juspeczyk (Malin Akerman) and Dr. Manhattan stand in the crystal palace on Mars, a scene of Laurie pulling a canvas off the Owl Ship, Dan Dreiberg (Patrick Wilson) contemplating the Comedian's smiley-face button in the Owl cave and a closeup of Laurie/Silk Specter II's kiss with Dreiberg in his Nite Owl costume while a nuclear blast goes off in the background. The footage even contained brief glimpses of Moloch (Matt Frewer) and a dead Dollar Bill. The footage--which was screened twice to cheering fans--was the highlight of a panel that featured Snyder, Akerman, Crudup, Matthew Goode, Gugino, Haley, Morgan, Wilson and original Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons. "[This was] a labor of love to get as much of the graphic novel into this movie as I could," Snyder told fans. WATCHMEN, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Gibbons, opens March 6, 2009. Go to http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/ to see some clips and get more information.

LEGEND OF THE SEEKER
Disney announced that the upcoming syndicated fantasy TV series formerly known as Wizard's First Rule will officially launch as LEGEND OF THE SEEKER and will kick off with a two-hour premiere on Nov. 1. You can catch a quick look at this Sam Raimi-produced project at http://www.legendoftheseeker.com/.

Max Payne MAX PAYNE
John Moore, the director of Fox's upcoming MAX PAYNE movie, told reporters that he reached back to an earlier cinematic style when adapting the first-person-shooter video game. "I was keen to work with [star] Mark [Wahlberg], to do something that we would have looked at and thought, 'Wow, that was a cool movie in the '70s,'" Moore said in a news conference at Comic-Con International on Thursday. Moore (The Omen) added: "For me definitely there was a sense of Steve McQueen's better films, a sense of Dirty Harry. But it was just about 'Could we build a character that people would, like, reference? A character from previous-generation movies? Could we do something that [was cool]? You know, cool has become such a sort of ineffective word; ... it just covers everything. It's lost its zing. But, yeah, we were trying to make a character that was cool insofar as his reactions were tempered, his anger was releasable, you know? Like a real, full character, a Lee Marvin from ... Point Blank." MAX PAYNE centers on a DEA agent (Wahlberg) whose family has been slain as part of a conspiracy and an assassin (Mila Kunis) out to avenge her sister's death. MAX PAYNE is slated to open Oct. 17.

THE PRISONER
AMC announced new cast members for its upcoming miniseries THE PRISONER, based on the 1960s cult classic TV series, who will join star Jim Caviezel in the title role of Number Six. The new cast members include: Ruth Wilson as Number 313; Hayley Atwell as Number 41-5; Lennie James (Jericho) as Number 147; and Jamie Campbell-Bower as Number 11-12. The cast includes Ian McKellen as Number Two. The six-hour PRISONER combines a wide range of genres, including espionage, thriller and SF. Patrick McGoohan served as the creator, producer, writer and director of the 1960s series. AMC's reinterpretation will reflect 21st-century concerns and anxieties, such as liberty, security and surveillance.

FREEDOM FORMULA
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Bryan Singer's Bad Hat Harry Prods. has joined with Radical Pictures to create a live-action feature based on FREEDOM FORMULA, a five-issue comicbook series by Edmund Shern. Radical Publishing is unveiling the comicbook at Comic-Con, which won't be released in August. It's described as a futuristic Top Gun in which racing exo-suits have replaced fighter jets. The story focuses on a genetically engineered racer who learns that his bloodline has the power to change society. Singer will produce with Radical's Barry Levine. Jesse Berger, Edmund Shern, Alex Garcia and Michael Zoumas will be exec producers. "This is a timeless story about young people struggling to break free of authority. That's what ultimately appealed to me," Singer said. Radical's Levine said: "There are great setpieces, but this is character-driven." No production date has been set.

B5 Podcast BABYLON PODCAST: SHOW 121

Welcome to Show #121!

Jeffrey has an upgraded studio at FarPoint Media Los Angeles, and boy does it make him sound good. Are they really working on the FarPoint Media Hawaii location? We shall soon see.

Tim had to attend family functions, but we’ve more than made up for it by having Lejon from Chandler in studio, and Gary from Jacksonville joining it to discuss some of the latest B5 news with us.

Discussion: We’ve already reposted JMS’ comments on moving forward with more Babylon 5, and the fan reactions are still flying all over the Internet. So Summer, Jeffrey, Gary, Michael and Brad discuss, in great detail and depth, with occassional comment from the chat room.

Anyone want to investigate the possibility of low budget fan film projects in the B5 universe? We already have fan-based audio projects, and archival projects… wonder what the options are and the chances are of B5 movies coming from a studio other than Warner Bros, or from a funded fan base, a la the many Star Trek and Star Wars fan film projects that are already out there.

And no, we’re not going to re-record the Babylon Podcast Season 3 opening again!

Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, get ahold of Summer.

FULL SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON SCHEDULE

For those of you lucky enough to go to the San Diego Comic-Con, July 23-27, there will be more than enough to occupy your time -- and I hope that some of you will remember us back here and send in some reports of what is going on.

Here is the schedule Comic-Con 2008 with a couple of items of particular interest to Babylon 5 Fans:
Thursday, July 24
11:00-12:00 Professional Writing: Threat or Menace?—
Let's talk writing, creativity, and selling (and selling out), and what the world of professional writing is like. Questions that you've always wanted to ask? Creative blocks bugging you? Wondered what the H*O*L*L*Y*W*O*O*D life is really like? Show up and get answers to those questions. This no-holds-barred talk is moderated by J. Michael Straczynski. Room 5AB

Saturday, July 26
4:45-5:45 Spotlight on J. Michael Straczynski—
Yes, it's him again. Somehow—we have no idea how—he's gone from writing comics and TV to working with Tom Cruise, Clint Eastwood, Ron Howard, Paul Greengrass, Tom Hanks, the Wachowski Brothers, and Angelina Jolie. His long career (he's also known for Babylon 5, Twilight Zone, and others) stands as proof positive that there is no such thing as a just God. What's he up to now? What's coming next? What secrets remain yet untold? How did he achieve this (well, okay, we know that and let's just say it has something to do with a contract signed with Ba'al)? Come and ask the man responsible—J. Michael Straczynski—for Thor, The Twelve, and such upcoming movies ass Changeling, World War Z, Proving Ground, The Flickering Light, The Grays, and Lensman. Room 6B

** UPDATE:
In regards to Comic Con San Diego...it was touch-and-go there for a while, but I'll be able to make it there after all. The schedule for the con is:
Writing seminar Thursday at 11. May or may not be able to swing by the Ninja Assassin talk at 6.

Autographs Saturday 1-3 in the main signing area, and my spotlight at 4:45.

Nothing on Sunday because I have to get back early because of work.

Topic #1:
Over the last several years, comic book themes have been BIG box office hits. Why do you think that is? Is it because comics, or graphic novels, make it easier to relate to a character? With the major success of THE DARK KNIGHT and SPIDER-MAN, what comic would you like to see next as a major film project?

Topic #2:
This one comes from Ranger Garybaldy:
If Warner Bros. would back a big budget BABYLON 5 film, but wanted other actors to play the major roles, would you be in favor of the project? This would be similar to the transition currently going on with STAR TREK as Christopher Pine takes on the role of James T. Kirk -- the story is set in the earlier days of the STAR TREK universe. What do you think?

Send in your thoughts and comments to sgbruckner@aol.com. I will post them on the Discussion Page for everyone to share and enjoy. There are some good ones so far. Add yours! If you see an old topic you want to respond to, go right ahead. We enjoy hearing from you.

* Discover why Andreas Katsulas refused to go to sci-fi conventions.

(Note: J. Michael Straczynski's introduction to "Day of the Dead" and Neil Gaiman's script are reprinted from the 1998 "Day of the Dead: A Babylon 5 Script book")

Just like previous volumes, the scripts included in Volume 3 are early drafts.

Because there are so many differences, you also get the Script/DVD Variations inventory, which catalogues all the changes, deletions, additions and extras that were in the script but you never actually got to see in a handy, easy-to- reference grid.

Witchblade WITCHBLADE: THE COMPLETE SERIES

Release date: July 29, 2008
Official Website: www.witchbladedvd.com

Witchblade: The Complete Series
Synopsis:
In this adaptation of the Top Cow comic book, Witchblade is the story of a New York detective, Sara "Pez" Pezzini, whose search for justice brings her into contact with the Witchblade, an ancient, intelligent, living weapon so powerful it can battle Earth's darkest evil forces. Week in and week out, "Pez" employs her skills as a police detective to fight crime. She finds she must employ the Witchblade to combat a much greater and frighteningly organized conspiracy of evil that threatens the very soul of humanity. As Sara tries to keep the secret of the Witchblade, do her job and have a personal life, she finds that her most formidable adversary may be the Witchblade itself.

REVIEW:
I remember this series when it was on TNT and thought it was absolutely awesome. The special effects for a TV drama were just astounding. Yancy Butler was unbelievable as Sarah Pezzini - in the title role. She was perfect to play this very conflicted person who saw so much injustice around her and was trying to make a difference not only be being a policeman -- but by being a good policeman.

This was one of the most under-rated TV series of its day. The cast was wonderful and you couldn't wait for the next week to see what would happen next as Sarah learned more about the Witchblade and why she was chosen to wear it.

The Closer-Third THE CLOSER: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON
Release Date: July 1, 2008
Official website: www.thecloserdvd.com

The Closer: The Complete Third Season
Synopsis:
Golden Globe Award-winner and Emmy Award nominee, Kyra Sedgwick portrays the role of Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, a CIA-trained detective who has been brought from Atlanta to Los Angeles to head up the Priority Murder Squad, a special unit of the LAPD that handles sensitive, high-profile murder cases. Despite her offbeat personality and tendency to step on people's toes, Brenda's tough-as-nails approach and track record prove her to be one of the country's leading investigators. Brenda is tapped to lead the team because she is a world-class interrogator, and when it comes to obtaining confessions, she is a closer. But her quirky attitude and hard-nosed approach to her job sometimes rub her colleagues the wrong way, as does the fact that she is a tough-minded Southern woman in a department dominated by men.

During season three, Brenda faces several challenges both personal and professional, as she is assigned to some very complex cases. She investigates a retirement facility where a man confesses to seven murders but refuses to give his name. She is put on a case that involves the slaughter of an entire family in an upscale Los Angeles neighborhood and has to deal with becoming the most downloaded video on YouTube after she's assaulted by a bride whose wedding she stopped. Half-way through the season, Brenda begins to feel ill until test results from the doctor reveal what's going on. The series also stars J.K. Simmons (Juno), Corey Reynolds (The Guardian), Robert Gossett (Passions), G.W. Bailey (The Jeff Foxworthy Show), Tony Denison (Prison Break) and Jon Tenney (The Division).

Arresting Bonus Features on the DVD set include:
- The Art of Interrogation - A featurette that depicts law enforcement professionals and criminal psychologists explaining the real-world art of interrogation and the skills necessary to be a "closer." The show's producers, writers and creators discuss the techniques used on the show and the advantages of using a female Deputy Police Chief as the show's main character.
- Gag Reel
- Unaired Scened
