WHAT'S NEW

Saturday, August 6, 2005:

JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORELL
In a recent interview, Susanna Clarke, author of the best-selling JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORELL, said tthat Christopher Hampton's screenplay adaptation is nearly finished. New Line Cinema hired Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons) to adapt Clarke's novel. "He's a marvelous choice [of adaptor]," she said in an interview. "He understands witty dialogue." Clarke's appreciation for wit shows in her choice to set Strange in 1806 England. "I wanted to write a fantasy book, and although I've read the classics—C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and Ursula Le Guin—I hadn't read a lot of later fantasy. My characters were initially going to be 18th-century magicians, but they kind of crept forward and settled in the early 19th century. Jane Austen's idioms and language lured me forward, and the Napoleonic war became the showcase for the characters' abilities." Strange centers on two English sorcerers who try to revive the use of magic against the backdrop of Napoleon's wars in Europe. Clarke has high hopes for a film version of the book, which has not been given a green light for production. "A film and a book are two different animals," she said. "The book was under my control, mine to mold, and film is a collaborative piece of work. But there are many things that can go wonderfully right with film." As a Hugo Award nominee for best novel, she plans to make an appearance at the 2005 World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow, U.K., this weekend. "I'm looking forward to that ceremony, because a lot of my friends will be there," she said. Does she think Strange, her first novel, will win? "No," she said. "I should be amazed if I do. But it's really nice to be nominated for something and not have to make the winner's speech."

KING KONG:
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Peter Jackson will also produce bonus materials for the DVD debut of the 1933 original movie, KING KONG. Jackson is working on a new documentary, RKO Production 601: The Making of Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World, a two-hour, seven-part feature included in the two-disc King Kong set, which Warner Home Video will release on Nov. 22. One part of the documentary focuses on the mysterious "spider pit" sequence deleted from the film before its theatrical premiere in New York and Los Angeles. "For years, there has always been speculation, does this footage exist?" George Feltenstein, the studio's senior vice president of classic catalog, said. "So we have a piece that actually explains what it was, and we do a recreation of it. For fans of the film, that's a big, important thing." KING KONG, which has never before been available on DVD, will arrive in stores in two configurations: a two-disc special edition and a two-disc collector's edition, packaged in a collectible tin, with a 20-page reproduction of the original souvenir program, postcard reproductions of the original one-sheets and a mail-in offer for a reproduction of a vintage 27-by-41-inch movie poster. Warner also will release a four-disc collector's set featuring the two-disc King Kong special edition, along with The Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young. Jackson's KING KONG hits theaters on Dec. 14 from Universal Pictures.

THURSDAY NIGHT RATINGS:
CBS continues to fly high on Thursday night. The Hollywood Reporter indicates that a repeat of "CSI" was far and away the most-watched program of the night, drawing 13.5 million viewers and 4.2 rating/13 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. NBC and Fox didn't even crack the 5 million viewer threshold all night; ABC barely peeked over the 6 million viewer mark thanks to 10 p.m.'s "Primetime Live" (6.9 million, 2.6/8). UPN's "WWE SmackDown!" (4.5 million, 1.6/5) showcase had no trouble beating its broadcast competition. NBC in particular was in dire straits, with 9 p.m.'s original "The Law Firm" (4 million, 1.4/4) declining by more than 1 million viewers from last week's unimpressive premiere performance. ABC wasn't any better off with its 9 p.m. original "Hooking Up" (4 million, 1.7/5).

THE TERMINUS
Variety reports that Warner Brothers has bought the SF movie pitch THE TERMINUS from writer Eric Singer and set it up with Basil Iwanyk's Thunder Road Films. The political thriller, set 50 years in the future, TERMINUS follows a burned-out and disillusioned war correspondent covering an insurgency who finds he can no longer stay objective. "It deals head on with what some call insurgency, what some call guerilla warfare and what some call freedom fighting," Iwanyk said. "Today's scenarios are completely fluid, but by setting it in the future we can extrapolate how that world would look like.

DRIFT HOUSE: Drift House According to Variety, Nickelodeon Movies has picked up the rights to DRIFT HOUSE by Dale Peck. The upcoming fantasy novel revolves around a girl and her two younger brothers being sent to live with their uncle in Canada in a house that resembles a ship perched at the edge of the sea. The siblings discover in the house a mural that seems to predict the future, a dumbwaiter that enables one of the brothers to travel into the future and a parrot historian who's also a translator. Nickelodeon's Julia Pistor will produce. The novel will be published in September by Bloomsbury. Peck plans a trilogy with THE DRIFT HOUSE.

AVENGER
According to the Hollywood Reporter, TNT has greenlighted an original movie titled "Avenger" from Oscar nominee Wolfgang Petersen, with Sam Elliott set to star in the international thriller. The cable network is partnering with Warner Bros. Television on the project, which is based on the novel by Frederick Forsyth. In the two-hour movie, Elliott will portray Cal Dexter, a small- town lawyer and former Special Forces operative who hires himself out to those seeking to avenge the violent murders of loved ones. As one quest of vengeance takes him around the world, a CIA agent sets out to stop him before his mission throws the world into chaos.

PAINKILLER JANE:
Comics Continuum reports that an announcement regarding the status of PAINKILLER JANE on SciFi Channel should be made by the end of the month. A pilot has been shot, with hopes of an ongoing series.

THE RETRIEVER:
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Vin Diesel will star in a movie called THE RETRIEVER, which features Diesel as a one-man army fighting to save the world from nuclear apocalypse. The film will be funded by Germany's Equity Pictures. A description of the project follows:
The whole world is threatened by an apocalyptic weapon, which originates from the death zone of Tschernobyl, having been left behind after the accident in the power plant. Rebels, having nothing to loose, are now threatening to use it. Pure action and thrills are making 'The Retriever' both a huge cinema action film as well as a success to be in the world-wide DVD box office.

THE FORGER
Variety reports that Paramount has bought Richard D'Ovidio's spec script THE FORGER and set it up with Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The story centers on an imprisoned thief who buys his way out of prison when he learns his estranged son has only a few months to live. But his efforts to make up for lost time with the teen are endangered when a crime boss forces him to do one last job. D'Ovidio's scripting credits include Exit Wounds, Thirteen Ghosts and Ace in the Hole.

Pat, who we all know and love as Lyta on Babylon 5, also has an extensive history in horror films -- NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, etc. She was recently interviewed by the Icons of Fright website and you can read more about this side of Pat's career at Icons of Fright. Pat sent along this note for horror fans out there. LAND OF THE DEAD will premiere shortly and you won't want to miss a thing. Pat writes:

LAND OF THE DEAD " Dear Horror Fans!
Last night I was invited to see the Los Angeles premiere of George A. Romero's LAND OF THE DEAD. It stars Simon Baker ( a Penny Lane supporter and star of the tv show "The Guardian") , John Legiuzamo, Dennis Hopper and more. It was great! I am very squeamish when it comes to horror movies, ironically, and I have to say I missed a lot of KNB's incredible effects burying my face during the worst of it. They were so REAL! The acting was great, we even laughed a lot ( intentional on George's part!) , the evening was a huge success. He got great reviews in Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. George hasn't made a film in a while as you may know. He is the best when it comes to these kinds of movies. He started the zombie craze!! It's so wild because he is the warmest and kindest guy. AND he needs our help. Universal hasn't put very much money into advertisement. What a film makes in it's opening weekend determines the studio's future decisions about what films will be made and filmmakers will make them! It is imperative we go out and see LAND OF THE DEAD this weekend and cast our vote! If you want to see more sci fi and horror films made, make sure you see the ones that come out on the opening weekend! Please take a friend and go be entertained this weekend by seeing Land Of The Dead! Cast that vote!
Stay scared!
Pat"

Part (anti-)war drama, part science fiction, it examined such themes as courage, loyalty and faith. Through the eyes of the Wild Cards, it explored what we, as humans, live for... and what we would be willing to die for.
