WHAT'S NEW

Saturday, August 20, 2005

STARGATE:
It was wonderful to see Amanda Tapping back on STARGATE SG-1 last night. While I'm still struggling with the new cast, having Col. Carter back was definitely a plus in the episode last night. On Tuesday night, you'll have a chance to catch up on all the new season two episodes of STARGATE ATLANTIS. SciFi will host a mini-marathon of the series beginning Tuesday at 7:00pm.

LOST:
According to USA Today, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (HBO's Oz) will join the cast of LOST as a new character called Emeka, joining Michelle Rodriguez as Ana-Lucia and one new female character.

THE ASTRONAUT FARMER:
The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Warner Independent Pictures has signed actor Billy Bob Thornton to star in THE ASTRONAUT FARMER. Mark and Michael Polish wrote the script. Michael Polish will direct. The story centers an eccentric farmer who dreams of space travel and sets out to build a rocket inside his barn. His neighbors consider him an oddity, the government thinks he is a threat, and the media sees him as a story.

SPAWN:
A lot of familiar names have turned up as Todd McFarlane announced on Spawn.com the voice cast for the new SPAWN animated series. Here is an excerpt:
The selection process was slow going as we had anywhere from five to ten actors for each part to critique. The characters voices are such a subjective choice it was nice to have many options. With so many options I was able to match the sound for each character that I had in my head with a real voice.
KEITH DAVID, ("Spawn: The Animated Series," "Pitch Black,") was at the top of my list for Spawn, since he had done such an excellent job in the HBO series. I couldn't imagine anyone else for the role. When Keith was approached for the part he was more than happy to return as the voice of Spawn and we were thrilled to have him back.
MICHAEL JAI WHITE, ("Spawn," "Exit Wounds,") who all of you should remember as portraying Spawn in our live action movie in 1997. I was pleased with his audition for Barabbas, one of our main "bad" characters, and happy for the opportunity to have both Spawn actors working together on the project.
Captain Edwards, the police chief. When I heard the voice of CARL WEATHERS ("Rocky," "Predator") I thought he was perfect. He had the right amount of authority in his voice and his delivery of the lines was close to perfect without any direction. He truly is an accomplished actor.
One character who was relatively easy to cast was our Detective Ainge. He was one of the first characters we heard and right away I chose BRUCE BOXLEITNER. Another impressive addition to our cast, as he has been doing voice over work for years in addition to his role as Capt. John J. Sheridan in "Babylon 5" and many other movie and television roles.
We did eventually find a gem, another recognizable name we were happy to add to the cast, MARK HAMILL ("Star Wars," "Batman: The Animated Series") will be our Twitch. Mark is a pro. He did three different auditions in three subtly different examples of the voice. His auditions showed a wide range of emotions as well. We were lucky to land him in such a pivotal role for our project.

SMALLVILLE
James Marsters Buffy fans will be happy to hear that James Marsters (Spike) will be showing up on SMALLVILLE this season as Brainiac. "It's so cool. I mean, I'm very excited about Smallville," Marsters said in a recent interview. "God, I had the best dinner with [executive producer] Al Gough, and granted, he was trying to seduce me into signing a contract with him, but I was struck with how normal he was, how down-to-earth and how much we talked about our families, and then about art. He was interesting on a number of subjects, and I think he's got a good mind. I like his brain with the Superman mythology. You know, [Smallville] is a coming-of-age drama again, like Buffy, and those are fabulous, because we're all coming of age constantly. I'm always trying to grow up, so you know, that story never gets old for anybody. 'Become yourself.' When are you not gonna need to hear that?

INVASION:
Variety reports that Daniel Craig will star opposite Nicole Kidman in INVASION, an SF thriller produced by Joel Silver for Warner Brothers and Village Roadshow. Shooting begins next month, with German helmer Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall) making his English-language studio directing debut. After a mysterious epidemic alters the behavior of human beings, a Washington psychiatrist (Kidman) discovers that its origins are extraterrestrial. She must fight to protect her son, who might hold the key to stopping the invasion. Craig plays Kidman's colleague and love interest who teams up with her to fight the invasion. INVASION was originally viewed as a remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, but David Kajganich's script was different enough that the studio now views it as an original.

ALADDIN:
According to Variety, Walt Disney Pictures has just bought a pitch for a modern-day ALADDIN story from writer Bill Kelly for Adam Shankman's Offspring Entertainment. Shankman (THE PACIFIER) is tentatively slated to direct, pending completion of the script. He will produce along with Offspring's Jennifer Gibgot. Sunil Perkash, who developed the story with Kelly, also is producing and will share story credit with Kelly is on tap to write the script. The movie will be a live-action retelling of the story in a contemporary setting. Otherwise, the studio is keeping details under wraps. Kelly is writing another contemporary, fairy-tale-inspired movie for Disney: ENCHANTED, a mix of live-action and animation, to be helmed by Kevin Lima (Tarzan).

CULT
FARSCAPE creator Rockne S. O'Bannon has some good news to share -- the WB has ordered a pilot for CULT, a thriller he has written on spec. The plot is about a series of mysterious deaths linked to fans of a TV show called CULT.

Space: Above and Beyond Ranger Dave writes that the SciFi series SPACE: ABOVE AND BEYOND is due for release on October 4th. Bestbuy.com is taking preorders for it. Amazon.com, however doesn't list it yet.
The television series "Space: Above and Beyond", created and produced by Glen Morgan and James Wong, chronicled the interplanetary adventures of a Marine squadron battling hostile aliens in the years 2063-2064. Part (anti-)war drama, part science fiction, it examined such themes as courage, loyalty and faith. Through the eyes of the Wild Cards, it explored what we, as humans, live for... and what we would be willing to die for.
"Space" aired on Fox-TV in 1995 and 1996, but - despite critical praise, decent ratings, viewer support, and four Emmy Award nominations - was cancelled.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #522

Amazing Spiderman #522 Written by J. Michael Straczynski, penciled by Mike Deodato, cover by Kaare Andrews.
It's an action-packed extravaganza as the hordes of Hydra make a final push to take over the United States!! And it's up to everyone's favorite red, white, and blue web-slinger to make sure that "Hail Hydra" isn't the new national anthem!
